29In the days of Pekah king of Israel, ^aTiglath-pileser king of Assyria came and captured ^bIjon, ^cAbel-beth-maacah, Janoah, ^dKedesh, ^eHazor, Gilead, and ^fGalilee, all the land of Naphtali, and he carried the people captive to Assyria.

2 Kings 17:6-23

The Fall of Israel

6In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria ^gcaptured Samaria, ^hand he carried the Israelites away to Assyria ⁱand placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of ^jGozan, and in the cities of ^kthe Medes.

Exile Because of Idolatry

7And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, ^lwho had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods 8 ^mand walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel, ⁿand in the customs that the kings of Israel had practiced. 9And the people of Israel did secretly against the Lord their God things that were not right. They built for themselves high places in all their towns, ^ofrom watchtower to fortified city. 10They set up for themselves ^ppillars and Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree, 11and there they made offerings on all the high places, as the nations did whom the Lord carried away before them. And they did wicked things, provoking the Lord to anger, 12and they served idols, ^qof which the Lord had said to them, “You shall not do this.” 13Yet the Lord ^rwarned Israel and Judah ^sby every prophet ^tand every seer, saying, ^u“Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by my servants the prophets.”

14But they would not listen, ^vbut were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the Lord their God. 15They despised his statutes ^wand his covenant that he made with their fathers and the warnings that he gave them. They went after ^xfalse idols ^yand became false, and they followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom the ^zLord had commanded them that they should not do like them. 16And they abandoned all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made for themselves metal images of ^aatwo calves; and they ^abmade an Asherah and ^acworshiped all the host of heaven and served ^adBaal. 17 ^aeAnd they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings ▼

and used ^agdivination and ^ahomens and ^aisold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger. 18Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but ^ajthe tribe of Judah only.

19 ^akJudah also did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the customs that Israel had introduced. 20And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel and afflicted them ^aland gave them into the hand of plunderers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

21 ^amWhen he had torn Israel from the house of David, ^anthey made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. And Jeroboam drove Israel from following the Lord ^aoand made them commit great sin. 22The people of Israel walked in all the sins that Jeroboam did. They did not depart from them, 23until the Lord removed Israel out of his sight, ^apas he had spoken by all his servants the prophets. ^aqSo Israel was exiled from their own land to Assyria until this day.

2 Kings 18:9-12

9In the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah, king of Israel, ^arShalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it, 10and at the end of three years he took it. In the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. 11The king of Assyria carried the Israelites away to Assyria and put them in ^asHalah, and on the ^atHabor, ^authe river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, 12because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God but transgressed his covenant, even all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded. They neither listened nor obeyed.

1 Chronicles 5:25-26

25But they broke faith with the God of their fathers, and ^avwhored ^awafter the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. 26So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of ^axPul king of Assyria, the spirit of ^ayTiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and he took them into exile, namely, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, and brought them ^azto Halah, ^baHabor, Hara, and ^bbthe river Gozan, to this day.

Jeremiah 3:8

8She saw that for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel, ^bcI had sent her away with ^bda decree of divorce. ^beYet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too went ^bfand played the whore.

Ezekiel 23:10

10 ^bgThese uncovered her nakedness; ^bhthey seized her sons and her daughters; and as for her, they killed her with the sword; and she became ^bia byword among women, ^bjwhen judgment had been executed on her.

Ezekiel 23:31

31You have gone the way of your sister; ^bktherefore I will give ^blher cup into your hand.
