7 aSo Ahaz sent messengers to bTiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, “I am your servant and your son. Come up and rescue me from the hand of the king of Syria and from the hand of the king of Israel, who are attacking me.” 8Ahaz also ctook the silver and gold that was found in the house of the Lord and in the treasures of the king’s house and sent a present to the king of Assyria. 9 dAnd the king of Assyria listened to him. Do Not Go Down to Egypt

1 Ah, istubborn children,” declares the Lord,
j“who carry out a plan, but not mine,
and who make kan alliance,
Hebrew  who weave a web
but not of my Spirit,
that they may add sin to sin;
2 mwho set out to go down to Egypt,
without asking for my direction,
to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh
and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!
3 nTherefore shall the protection of Pharaoh turn to your shame,
and the shelter in the shadow of Egypt to your humiliation.
4For though his officials are at oZoan
and phis envoys reach qHanes,

through ra people that cannot profit them,
that brings neither help nor profit,
but shame and disgrace.”

Woe to Those Who Go Down to Egypt

1 Woe to wthose who go down to Egypt for help
and rely on horses,
who xtrust in chariots because they are many
and in horsemen because they are very strong,
but ydo not look to the Holy One of Israel
or consult the Lord!
2And zyet he is wise and brings disaster;
aahe does not call back his words,
but abwill arise against the house of the evildoers
and against the helpers of acthose who work iniquity.
3The Egyptians are man, and not God,
and their horses adare flesh, and not spirit.
When the Lord stretches out his hand,
the helper will stumble, and he who is helped will fall,
and they will all perish together.
