The Fall of Israel

6In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria acaptured Samaria, band he carried the Israelites away to Assyria cand placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of dGozan, and in the cities of ethe Medes.

2 Kings 17:18

18Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but fthe tribe of Judah only.

2 Kings 19:9-11

9 gNow the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, “Behold, he has set out to fight against you.” So he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, 10“Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God hin whom you trust deceive you by promising that iJerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered?

Isaiah 7:8-9

8For the head of Syria is jDamascus,
and the head of Damascus is Rezin.
And within sixty-five years
Ephraim will be shattered from being a people.
9And the head of Ephraim is Samaria,
and the head of Samaria is kthe son of Remaliah.

are not firm in faith,
you will not be firm at all.’”

Isaiah 8:4

4 nfor before the boy knows how to cry ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the owealth of pDamascus and the spoil of qSamaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”

Isaiah 17:3

3The fortress will disappear from rEphraim,
and the kingdom from sDamascus;
and the remnant of Syria will be
like tthe glory of the children of Israel,

declares the Lord of hosts.

Amos 3:9-15

9 Proclaim to the strongholds in uAshdod
and to the strongholds in the land of Egypt,
and say, “Assemble yourselves on vthe mountains of Samaria,
and see the great tumults within her,
and wthe oppressed in her midst.”
10“They do not know how to do right,” declares the Lord,
x“those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”
11Therefore thus says the Lord God:

y“An adversary shall surround the land
and bring down
Hebrew  An adversary, one who surrounds the land—he shall bring down
your defenses from you,
and aayour strongholds shall be plundered.”
12Thus says the Lord: ab“As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, acso shall the people of Israel adwho dwell in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part
The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain
of a bed.

13 Hear, afand testify against the house of Jacob,”
declares the Lord God, agthe God of hosts,
14that on the day I punish Israel for his transgressions,
ahI will punish the altars of Bethel,
and aithe horns of the altar shall be cut off
and fall to the ground.
15 ajI will strike akthe winter house along with althe summer house,
and amthe houses of ivory shall perish,
and the great houses
Or  and many houses
shall come to an end,”

declares the Lord.

Amos 4:1

1Hear this word, aoyou cows of Bashan,
who are apon the mountain of Samaria,
aqwho oppress the poor, arwho crush the needy,
who say to your husbands, ‘Bring, that we may drink!’

Amos 6:1-8

Woe to Those at Ease in Zion

1 asWoe to those who are at ease in Zion,
and to those who feel secure on atthe mountain of Samaria,
authe notable men of avthe first of the nations,
to whom the house of Israel comes!
2Pass over to awCalneh, and see,
and from there go to axHamath the great;
then go down to ayGath of the Philistines.
azAre you better than these kingdoms?
Or is their territory greater than your territory,
3 baO you who put far away the day of disaster
bband bring near the seat of violence?
4 “Woe to those bcwho lie on bdbeds of ivory
beand stretch themselves out on their couches,
and eat lambs from the flock
bfand calves from the midst of the stall,
5 bgwho sing idle songs to the sound of the harp
and like David bhinvent for themselves instruments of music,
6 biwho drink wine in bowls
and bjanoint themselves with the finest oils,
but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!
7 bkTherefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile,
and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away.”
8 blThe Lord God has sworn by himself, declares the Lord, the God of hosts:

“I abhor bmthe pride of Jacob
and hate his strongholds,
bnand I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.”

Amos 9:1

The Destruction of Israel

1I saw the Lord standing beside

the altar, and he said:

bpStrike the capitals until bqthe thresholds brshake,
bsand shatter them on the heads of all the people;
Hebrew  all of them

and those who are left of them I will kill with the sword;
bunot one of them shall flee away;
not one of them shall escape.
