2 Kings 18:8-12

8 aHe struck down the Philistines as far as Gaza and its territory, bfrom watchtower to fortified city.

9In the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah, king of Israel, cShalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it, 10and at the end of three years he took it. In the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. 11The king of Assyria carried the Israelites away to Assyria and put them in dHalah, and on the eHabor, fthe river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, 12because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God but transgressed his covenant, even all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded. They neither listened nor obeyed.

Isaiah 14:28-32

An Oracle Concerning Philistia

28In the year that gKing Ahaz died came this horacle:

29 Rejoice not, iO Philistia, all of you,
that jthe rod that struck you is broken,
for from the serpent’s root will come forth an adder,
and its fruit will be a kflying fiery serpent.
30And the firstborn of lthe poor will graze,
and mthe needy lie down in safety;
but I will kill your root with famine,
and your remnant it will slay.
31 nWail, O ogate; cry out, O city;
melt in fear, pO Philistia, all of you!
qFor smoke comes out of the north,
and there is no straggler in his ranks.
32 What will one answer the messengers of the nation?
r“The Lord has founded Zion,
and in her the afflicted of his people find refuge.”
