Psalms 79:1-7

How Long, O Lord?

A Psalm of hAsaph.

1 O God, ithe nations have come into your jinheritance;
they have defiled your kholy temple;
they have llaid Jerusalem in ruins.
2They have given mthe bodies of your servants
to the birds of the heavens for food,
the flesh of your nfaithful to othe beasts of the earth.
3They have poured out their blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there was pno one to bury them.
4We have become qa taunt to our neighbors,
rmocked and derided by those around us.
5 sHow long, O Lord? Will you be angry tforever?
Will your ujealousy vburn like fire?
6 wPour out your anger on the nations
that xdo not know you,
and on the kingdoms
that ydo not call upon your name!
7For they have devoured Jacob
and laid waste his habitation.

Isaiah 1:7

7 zYour country lies desolate;
your cities are burned with fire;
in your very presence
foreigners devour your land;
it is desolate, as overthrown by foreigners.

Lamentations 1:1-4

How Lonely Sits the City

1 aaHow lonely sits the city
that was full of people!
How like aba widow has she become,
she who was great among the nations!
She who was aca princess among the provinces
has become ada slave.
2 aeShe weeps bitterly in the night,
with tears on her cheeks;
afamong all her lovers
she has agnone to comfort her;
ahall her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
they have become her enemies.
3 aiJudah has gone into exile because of affliction
and hard servitude;
ajshe dwells now among the nations,
akbut finds no resting place;
her pursuers have all overtaken her
in the midst of her distress.
Or  in the narrow passes

4 The roads to Zion mourn,
for none come to amthe festival;
anall her gates are desolate;
her priests aogroan;
her virgins have been afflicted,
Septuagint, Old Latin dragged away

and she herself suffers bitterly.

Lamentations 2:4-8

4 aqHe has bent his bow like an enemy,
with his right hand set arlike a foe;
and he has killed all who were delightful in our eyes
in the tent of the daughter of Zion;
he has poured out his fury like fire.
5 asThe Lord has become like an enemy;
athe has swallowed up Israel;
auhe has swallowed up all its palaces;
he has laid in ruins its strongholds,
and he has multiplied in the daughter of Judah
avmourning and lamentation.
6 He has laid waste his booth like a garden,
laid in ruins awhis meeting place;
axthe Lord has made Zion forget
festival and aySabbath,
and in his fierce indignation has spurned king and priest.
7 azThe Lord has scorned his altar,
badisowned his sanctuary;
bbhe has delivered into the hand of the enemy
the walls of her palaces;
bcthey raised a clamor in the house of the Lord
as on the day of festival.
8 bdThe Lord determined to lay in ruins
bethe wall of the daughter of Zion;
bfhe stretched out the measuring line;
he did not restrain his hand from destroying;
bghe caused rampart and wall to lament;
bhthey languished together.

Lamentations 5:18
