6When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of aBeth-rehob, and bthe Syrians of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of cMaacah with 1,000 men, and the men of dTob, 12,000 men.

14And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.

16And Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond ethe Euphrates.

So the Syrians were afraid to save the Ammonites anymore.

1In the days of zAhaz the son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, aaRezin the king of Syria and abPekah the son of Remaliah the king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not yet mount an attack against it.

Isaiah 29:5-8

5 But the multitude of your foreign foes shall be like amsmall dust,
and the multitude of the ruthless like passing chaff.
anAnd in an instant, suddenly,
6 aoyou will be visited by the Lord of hosts
with thunder and with earthquake and great noise,
with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.
7And apthe multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel,
all that fight against her and her stronghold and distress her,
shall be aqlike a dream, a vision of the night.
8 arAs when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he is eating,
and awakes with his hunger not satisfied,
or as when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he is drinking
and awakes faint, with his thirst not quenched,
so shall the multitude of all the nations be
that fight against Mount Zion.
