2 Samuel 5:17-25

David Defeats the Philistines

17When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went down ato the stronghold. 18Now the Philistines had come and spread out in bthe Valley of Rephaim. 19And David cinquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” 20And David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. And he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like a breaking flood.” dTherefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim.
Baal-perazim means lord of bursting through
21And the Philistines left their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.

22And the Philistines came up yet again fand spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 23 gAnd when David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 24And hwhen you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, ifor then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 25And David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba jto Gezer.

War with the Philistines

15There was war again between the Philistines and Israel, and David went down together with his servants, and they fought against the Philistines. And David grew weary. 16And Ishbi-benob, one of the descendants mof the giants, whose spear weighed three hundred shekels
A  shekel was about 2/5 ounce or 11 grams
of bronze, and who was armed with a new sword, thought to kill David.
17But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid and attacked the Philistine and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, o“You shall no longer go out with us to battle, lest you quench pthe lamp of Israel.”

18 qAfter this there was again war with the Philistines at Gob. Then rSibbecai sthe Hushathite struck down Saph, who was one of the descendants tof the giants. 19And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob, and uElhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, the Bethlehemite, struck down Goliath the Gittite, vthe shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.
