2 Samuel 6

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

1 aDavid again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from bBaale-judah cto bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts dwho sits enthroned on the cherubim. 3And they carried the ark of God eon a new cart and brought it fout of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio,
Or  and his brother; also verse 4
the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart,
Compare Septuagint; Hebrew  the new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill
4with the ark of God, and Ahio went before the ark.

Uzzah and the Ark

5And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, with isongs
Septuagint, 1 Chronicles 13:8; Hebrew fir trees
and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.
6And when they came to the threshing floor of kNacon, Uzzah lput out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. 7And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and mGod struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God. 8And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah
 Perez-uzzah means the breaking out against Uzzah
to this day.
9And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10So David was not willing to take the ark of the Lord into the city of David. But David took it aside oto the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 11And the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, pand the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household.

12And it was told King David, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” qSo David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom rto the city of David with rejoicing. 13And when sthose who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six steps, the sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. 14And David udanced before the Lord with all his might. And David was vwearing a linen ephod. 15So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the horn.

David and Michal

16As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart. 17And they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it win its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it. xAnd David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 18And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, yhe blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts 19and distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat,

and a cake of raisins to each one. aaThen all the people departed, each to his house.

20And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, abuncovering himself today before the eyes of his servantsfemale servants, as one of the acvulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” 21And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, adwho chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince
Or leader
over Israel, the people of the Lord—and I will celebrate before the Lord.
22I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your

eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.”
23And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.

1 Chronicles 15

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

1David
Hebrew He
built houses for himself in the city of David. And he prepared a place for the ark of God and ahpitched a tent for it.
2Then David said that no one but the Levites may carry aithe ark of God, for the Lord had chosen them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister to him forever. 3 ajAnd David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord akto its place, which he had prepared for it. 4And David gathered together the sons of Aaron and althe Levites: 5of the sons of Kohath, Uriel the chief, with 120 of his brothers; 6of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief, with 220 of his brothers; 7of the sons of Gershom, Joel the chief, with 130 of his brothers; 8of the sons of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the chief, with 200 of his brothers; 9of the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief, with 80 of his brothers; 10of the sons of Uzziel, Amminadab the chief, with 112 of his brothers. 11Then David summoned the priests amZadok and anAbiathar, and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab, 12and said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites. aoConsecrate yourselves, you and your brothers, so that you may bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, apto the place that I have prepared for it. 13 aqBecause you did not carry it the first time, the Lord our God broke out against us, because we did not seek him according to the rule.” 14So the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. 15And the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders arwith the poles, asas Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord.

16David also commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brothers as the singers who should play loudly on atmusical instruments, on harps and lyres and cymbals, to raise sounds of joy. 17So the Levites appointed auHeman the son of Joel; and of his brothers avAsaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari, their brothers, awEthan the son of Kushaiah; 18and with them their brothers of the second order, Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers Obed-edom and Jeiel. 19The singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were to sound bronze cymbals; 20Zechariah, axAziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play harps according to ayAlamoth; 21but Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, azObed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead with lyres according to bathe Sheminith. 22Chenaniah, leader of the Levites in music, should direct the music, for he understood it. 23Berechiah and Elkanah were to be gatekeepers for the ark. 24Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, should bbblow the trumpets before the ark of God. bcObed-edom and Jehiah were to be gatekeepers for the ark.

25 bdSo David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of thousands went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of beObed-edom with rejoicing. 26And because God helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they sacrificed bfseven bulls and seven rams. 27David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, as also were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers and Chenaniah the leader of the music of the singers. And David wore a linen ephod. 28So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, to the sound of the horn, bgtrumpets, and cymbals, and made loud music on bhharps and lyres.

29And as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came to the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David dancing and celebrating, and she despised him in her heart.

1 Chronicles 16

The Ark Placed in a Tent

1And they brought in the ark of God and set it inside bithe tent that David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God. 2And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord 3and distributed to all Israel, both men and women, to each a loaf of bread, a portion of meat,
Compare Septuagint, Syriac, Vulgate; the meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain
and a cake of raisins.

4Then he appointed some of the Levites as ministers before the ark of the Lord, to invoke, to thank, and to praise the Lord, the God of Israel. 5 bkAsaph was the chief, and second to him were Zechariah, Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, who were to play harps and lyres; Asaph was to sound the cymbals, 6and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God. 7Then on that day blDavid first appointed that thanksgiving be sung to the Lord by Asaph and his brothers.

David’s Song of Thanks

8 bmOh give thanks to the Lord; bncall upon his name;
bomake known his deeds among the peoples!
9Sing to him, sing praises to him;
tell of all his wondrous works!
10Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
11 bpSeek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually!
12 bqRemember the wondrous works that he has done,
brhis miracles and the judgments he uttered,
13O offspring of Israel his servant,
children of Jacob, his chosen ones!
14 He is the Lord our God;
bshis judgments are in all the earth.
15Remember his covenant forever,
the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
16the covenant btthat he made with Abraham,
his sworn promise to Isaac,
17which buhe confirmed to Jacob as a statute,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
18saying, bv“To you I will give the land of Canaan,
as your portion for an inheritance.”
19 When you were bwfew in number,
of little account, and bxsojourners in it,
20wandering from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another people,
21he allowed no one to oppress them;
he byrebuked kings on their account,
22saying, “Touch not my anointed ones,
do my bzprophets no harm!”
23 caSing to the Lord, all the earth!
Tell of his salvation from day to day.
24Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
25For cbgreat is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and he is to be feared ccabove all gods.
26For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
cdbut the Lord made the heavens.
27Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his place.
28 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
ceascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
29Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come before him!
cfWorship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;
Or  in holy attire

30tremble before him, all the earth;
yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
31 chLet the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice,
and let them say among the nations, ci“The Lord reigns!”
32 cjLet the sea roar, and all that fills it;
let the field exult, and everything in it!
33Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy
before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth.
34Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!
35 ckSay also:

Save us, O God of our salvation,
and gather and deliver us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
and glory in your praise.
36 clBlessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting!”
cmThen all the people said, “Amen!” and praised the Lord.

Worship Before the Ark

37So David left Asaph and his brothers there cnbefore the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister regularly before the ark coas each day required, 38and also cpObed-edom and his
Hebrew their
sixty-eight brothers, while crObed-edom, the son of Jeduthun, and csHosah were to be gatekeepers.
39And he left ctZadok the priest and his brothers the priests before the tabernacle of the Lord cuin the high place that was at Gibeon 40to offer burnt offerings to the Lord cvon the altar of burnt offering cwregularly morning and evening, to do all that is written in the Law of the Lord that he commanded Israel. 41With them were cxHeman and Jeduthun cyand the rest of those chosen and czexpressly named to give thanks to the Lord, dafor his steadfast love endures forever. 42Heman and Jeduthun had trumpets and cymbals for the music and instruments dbfor sacred song. The sons of Jeduthun were appointed to the gate.

43 dcThen all the people departed each to his house, and David went home to bless his household.

1 Chronicles 17

The Lord’s Covenant with David

1 ddNow when David lived in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.” 2And Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”

3But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, 4Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: deIt is not you who will build me a house to dwell in. 5For I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up Israel to this day, dfbut I have gone from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling. 6In all places where I have moved with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ 7Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel, 8and I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 9And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall waste them no more, as formerly, 10from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I dgwill subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the Lord will build you a house. 11When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 dhI will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, dias I took it from him who was before you, 14but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.’” 15In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

David’s Prayer

16Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 17And this was a small thing in your eyes, O God. You have also spoken of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have shown me future generations,
The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain
O Lord God!
18And what more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant. 19 dkFor your servant’s sake, O Lord, and according to your own heart, you have done all this greatness, in making known all these great things. 20There is none like you, O Lord, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21And who is like your people Israel, the one
Septuagint, Vulgate other
nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making for yourself a name for great and awesome things, in driving out nations before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt?
22And you made your people Israel to be your people forever, and you, O Lord, became their God. 23And now, O Lord, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do as you have spoken, 24and your name will be established and magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel’s God,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 25For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. Therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you. 26And now, O Lord, you are God, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. 27Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you, for it is you, O Lord, who have blessed, and it is blessed forever.”
