Acts 4:1-21

Peter and John Before the Council

1And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and athe captain of the temple and bthe Sadducees came upon them, 2greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming cin Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3And they arrested them and dput them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4But many of those who had heard the word believed, and ethe number of the men came to about five thousand.

5On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6with fAnnas the high priest and gCaiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, hBy what power or iby what name did you do this?” 8Then Peter, jfilled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, 9if we are being examined today kconcerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that lby the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, mwhom God raised from the deadby him this man is standing before you well. 11 nThis Jesus

12And there is rsalvation sin no one else, for tthere is no other uname under heaven given among men

by which we must be saved.”

13 wNow when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14But seeing the man who was healed xstanding beside them, ythey had nothing to say in opposition. 15But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16saying, zWhat shall we do with these men? For that aaa notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them abto speak no more to anyone in this name.” 18So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19But Peter and John answered them, acWhether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20for adwe cannot but speak of what aewe have seen and heard.” 21And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, afbecause of the people, for all were praising God agfor what had happened.

Acts 5:17-40

The Apostles Arrested and Freed

17But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of ahthe Sadducees), and filled with aijealousy 18they arrested the apostles and ajput them in the public prison. 19But during the night akan angel of the Lord alopened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all amthe words of anthis aoLife.” 21And when they heard this, apthey entered the temple aqat daybreak and began to teach.

Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council, all the senate of the people of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
22But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, 23“We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside.” 24Now when arthe captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. 25And someone came and told them, “Look! The men whom you put in prison asare standing in the temple and teaching the people.” 26Then atthe captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for authey were afraid of being stoned by the people.

27And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, 28saying, av“We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you awintend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” 29But Peter and the apostles answered, ax“We must obey God rather than men. 30 ayThe God of our fathers azraised Jesus, bawhom you killed by hanging him on bba tree. 31God exalted bchim at his right hand as bdLeader and beSavior, bfto give bgrepentance to Israel and bhforgiveness of sins. 32And biwe are witnesses to these things, and bjso is the Holy Spirit, bkwhom God has given to those who obey him.”

33When they heard this, they blwere enraged and wanted to kill them. 34But a Pharisee in the council named bmGamaliel, bna teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while. 35And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. 36For bobefore these days Theudas rose up, bpclaiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of bqthe census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered. 38So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for brif this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; 39but bsif it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You btmight even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice, 40and buwhen they had called in the apostles, bvthey beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

Acts 6:11-15

11Then bwthey secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council, 13and they bxset up false bywitnesses who said, “This man never ceases to speak words against bzthis holy place and the law, 14for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth cawill destroy this place and will cbchange ccthe customs that Moses delivered to us.” 15And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face cdwas like the face of an angel.

Acts 7:54-60

The Stoning of Stephen

at him.
58Then cnthey cast him out of the city and costoned him. And cpthe witnesses laid down their garments cqat the feet of a young man named Saul. 59And as they were stoning Stephen, crhe called out, “Lord Jesus, csreceive my spirit.” 60And ctfalling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, cuLord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, cvhe fell asleep.
