Amos 1

1The words of Amos, who was among the ashepherds
Or sheep breeders
of cTekoa, which he saw concerning Israel din the days of eUzziah king of Judah and in the days of fJeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years
Or during two years
before hthe earthquake.

Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

2And he said:

i“The Lord roars from Zion
and utters his voice from Jerusalem;
jthe pastures of the shepherds mourn,
and the ktop of lCarmel withers.”
3Thus says the Lord:

m“For three transgressions of nDamascus,
and for four, oI will not revoke the punishment,
Hebrew  I will not turn it back; also verses 6, 9, 11, 13

because they have threshed qGilead
with threshing sledges of iron.
4 rSo I will send a fire upon the house of sHazael,
and it shall devour the strongholds of tBen-hadad.
5I will ubreak the gate-bar of vDamascus,
and cut off the inhabitants from the Valley of wAven,
Or On

and him who holds the scepter from yBeth-eden;
and the people of zSyria shall go into exile to aaKir,”

says the Lord.
6Thus says the Lord:

ab“For three transgressions of acGaza,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because adthey carried into exile a whole people
to deliver them up to Edom.
7So I will send a fire upon the wall of aeGaza,
and it shall devour her strongholds.
8I will cut off the inhabitants from afAshdod,
and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,”

says the Lord God.
9Thus says the Lord:

ag“For three transgressions of ahTyre,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they delivered up a whole people to Edom,
and did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
10So I will send a fire upon the wall of aiTyre,
and it shall devour her strongholds.”
11Thus says the Lord:

aj“For three transgressions of akEdom,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
albecause he pursued his brother with the sword
amand cast off all pity,
anand his anger tore perpetually,
aoand he kept his wrath forever.
12So I will send a fire upon apTeman,
and it shall devour the strongholds of aqBozrah.”
13Thus says the Lord:

ar“For three transgressions of the asAmmonites,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because atthey have ripped open pregnant women in auGilead,
that they might enlarge their border.
14So I will kindle a fire in the wall of avRabbah,
awand it shall devour her strongholds,
with shouting on the day of battle,
axwith a tempest in the day of the whirlwind;
15and aytheir king shall go into exile,
he and his princes
Or officials
together,”

says the Lord.

Amos 2

1Thus says the Lord:

ba“For three transgressions of bbMoab,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
Hebrew  I will not turn it back; also verses 4, 6

because bdhe burned to lime
the bones of the king of Edom.
2So I will send a fire upon Moab,
and it shall devour the strongholds of beKerioth,
and Moab shall die amid uproar,
amid shouting and the sound of the trumpet;
3 bfI will cut off the ruler from its midst,
and will kill bgall its princes
Or officials
with him,”

says the Lord.

Judgment on Judah

4Thus says the Lord:

bi“For three transgressions of Judah,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because bjthey have rejected the law of the Lord,
and have not kept his statutes,
but bktheir lies have led them astray,
those after which their fathers walked.
5So blI will send a fire upon Judah,
and it shall devour the strongholds of Jerusalem.”

Judgment on Israel

6Thus says the Lord:

bm“For three transgressions of Israel,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because bnthey sell the righteous for bosilver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals
7those who trample the head of the poor bpinto the dust of the earth
and bqturn aside the way of the afflicted;
bra man and his father go in to the same girl,
so that my holy name is profaned;
8they lay themselves down beside every altar
on garments bstaken in pledge,
and in the house of their God they drink
the wine of those who have been fined.
9 “Yet btit was I who destroyed the Amorite before them,
buwhose height was like the height of the cedars
and who was as strong as the oaks;
bvI destroyed his fruit above
and his roots beneath.
10 bwAlso it was I who brought you up out of the land of Egypt
bxand led you forty years in the wilderness,
byto possess the land of the Amorite.
11And I raised up some of your sons for prophets,
and some of your young men for bzNazirites.
Is it not indeed so, O people of Israel?”

declares the Lord.
12 “But you made the Nazirites cadrink wine,
and commanded the prophets,
saying, cb‘You shall not prophesy.’
13 Behold, I will press you down in your place,
as a cart full of sheaves presses down.
14 ccFlight shall perish from the swift,
cdand the strong shall not retain his strength,
cenor shall the mighty save his life;
15he who handles the bow shall not stand,
and he who is cfswift of foot shall not save himself,
cgnor shall he who rides the horse save his life;
16and he who is stout of heart among the mighty
shall flee away naked in that day,”

declares the Lord.

Zephaniah 1

1The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah the son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah, chin the days of ciJosiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

The Coming Judgment on Judah

2 cj“I will utterly sweep away everything
from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.
3“I will sweep away ckman and beast;
I will sweep away the birds of the heavens
and clthe fish of the sea,
and cmthe rubble
Or stumbling blocks (that is, idols)
with the wicked.
I will cocut off mankind
from the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.
4“I will stretch out my hand against Judah
and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem;
cpand I will cut off from this place the remnant of Baal
and the name of the idolatrous priests along with the priests,
5 cqthose who bow down on the roofs
to the host of the heavens,
crthose who bow down and swear to the Lord
and yet swear by csMilcom,
6 ctthose who have turned back from following the Lord,
cuwho do not seek the Lord or inquire of him.”

The Day of the Lord Is Near

7 cvBe silent before the Lord God!
For cwthe day of the Lord is near;
cxthe Lord has prepared a sacrifice
and cyconsecrated his guests.
8And on the day of the Lord’s sacrifice
cz“I will punish the officials and the king’s sons
and daall who array themselves in foreign attire.
9On that day I will punish
everyone dbwho leaps over the threshold,
and those who fill their master’s
Or  their Lord’s
house
with violence and fraud.
10 “On that day,” declares the Lord,
“a cry will be heard from ddthe Fish Gate,
dea wail from dfthe Second Quarter,
a loud crash from the hills.
11 dgWail, O inhabitants of the Mortar!
For all the traders
Or  all the people of Canaan
are no more;
all who weigh out silver are cut off.
12At that time diI will search Jerusalem with lamps,
and I will punish the men
djwho are complacent,
Hebrew  are thickening on the dregs [of their wine]

dlthose who say in their hearts,
‘The Lord will not do good,
nor will he do ill.’
13Their goods shall be dmplundered,
and their houses laid waste.
dnThough they build houses,
they shall not inhabit them;
dothough they plant vineyards,
they shall not drink wine from them.”
14 dpThe great day of the Lord is near,
near and hastening fast;
the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter;
dqthe mighty man cries aloud there.
15 drA day of wrath is that day,
a day of distress and anguish,
a day of dsruin and devastation,
dta day of darkness and gloom,
dua day of clouds and thick darkness,
16 dva day of trumpet blast and battle cry
dwagainst the fortified cities
and against the lofty battlements.
17 dxI will bring distress on mankind,
so that they shall walk dylike the blind,
because they have sinned against the Lord;
dztheir blood shall be poured out like dust,
and their flesh ealike dung.
18 ebNeither their silver nor their gold
shall be able to deliver them
on the day of the wrath of the Lord.
ecIn the fire of his jealousy,
edall the earth shall be consumed;
eefor a full and sudden end
he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.

Zephaniah 2

Judgment on Judah’s Enemies

1 Gather together, yes, gather,
O efshameless nation,
2 egbefore the decree takes effect
Hebrew gives birth

—before the day passes away eilike chaff
ejbefore there comes upon you
the burning anger of the Lord,
before there comes upon you
the day of the anger of the Lord.
3 ekSeek the Lord, elall you humble of the land,
who do his just commands;
Or  who carry out his judgment

enseek righteousness; seek humility;
eoperhaps epyou may be hidden
on the day of the anger of the Lord.
4 eqFor Gaza shall be deserted,
and Ashkelon shall become a desolation;
Ashdod’s people shall be driven out at noon,
and Ekron shall be uprooted.
5 Woe to eryou inhabitants of the seacoast,
you nation of esthe Cherethites!
etThe word of the Lord is against you,
euO Canaan, land of the Philistines;
and I will destroy you evuntil no inhabitant is left.
6 ewAnd you, O seacoast, exshall be pastures,
with meadows
Or caves
for shepherds
and folds for flocks.
7 ezThe seacoast shall become the possession
of fathe remnant of the house of Judah,
fbon which they shall graze,
and in the houses of Ashkelon
they shall lie down at evening.
For the Lord their God fcwill be mindful of them
and fdrestore their fortunes.
8 “I have heard fethe taunts of Moab
and ffthe revilings of the Ammonites,
how they have taunted my people
and made boasts fgagainst their territory.
9Therefore, fhas I live,” declares the Lord of hosts,
the God of Israel,
Moab shall become filike Sodom,
and the Ammonites fjlike Gomorrah,
a land possessed by nettles and salt pits,
and a waste forever.
The remnant of my people shall plunder them,
and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.”
10This shall be their lot in return fkfor their pride,
because they taunted and boasted
against the people of the Lord of hosts.
11The Lord will be awesome against them;
flfor he will famish all the gods of the earth,
and fmto him shall bow down,
each in its place,
all fnthe lands of the nations.
12 foYou also, O Cushites,
shall be slain by my sword.
13 And he will stretch out his hand against the north
fpand destroy Assyria,
and he fqwill make Nineveh a desolation,
a dry waste like the desert.
14 frHerds shall lie down in her midst,
all kinds of beasts;
Hebrew beasts of every nation

fteven the owl and the hedgehog
The identity of the animals rendered  owl and  hedgehog is uncertain

shall lodge in her capitals;
a voice shall hoot in the window;
devastation will be on the threshold;
for fvher cedar work will be laid bare.
15This is the exultant city
fwthat lived securely,
that said in her heart,
I am, and there is no one else.”
What a desolation she has become,
fxa lair for wild beasts!
fyEveryone who passes by her
hisses and fzshakes his fist.
