Love Your Enemies

43 k“You have heard that it was said, l‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’

Matthew 15:2-9

2 mWhy do your disciples break nthe tradition of the elders? oFor they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3He answered them, And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4For God commanded, pHonor your father and your mother,’ and, q‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 5But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”
Or  is an offering
6he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have smade void the word

of God.
7 uYou hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:

8 v“‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
9in vain do they worship me,
teaching as wdoctrines the commandments of men.’”

Mark 7:1-13

Traditions and Commandments

1 xNow when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes ywho had come from Jerusalem, 2they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were zdefiled, that is, unwashed. 3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly,
Greek  unless they wash the hands with a fist, probably indicating a kind of ceremonial washing
holding to abthe tradition of acthe elders,
4and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash.
Greek  unless they baptize; some manuscripts  unless they purify themselves
And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as aethe washing of afcups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.
Some manuscripts omit  and dining couches
)
5And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to ahthe tradition of aithe elders, ajbut eat with akdefiled hands?” 6And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you alhypocrites, as it is written,

am“‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
7in vain do they worship me,
teaching as andoctrines the commandments of men.’
8You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

9And he said to them, “You have a fine way of aorejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10For Moses said, apHonor your father and your mother’; and, aq‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)
Or an offering
12then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13thus asmaking void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
