Deuteronomy 13

1If a prophet or aa dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, 2and bthe sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ 3you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the Lord your God cis testing you, to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4You shall dwalk after the Lord your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and ehold fast to him. 5But fthat prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has taught rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of slavery, to make you leave the way in which the Lord your God commanded you to walk. gSo you shall purge the evil
Or  evil person
from your midst.

6 iIf your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter or jthe wife you embrace
Hebrew  the wife of your bosom
or your friend lwho is as your own soul entices you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ mwhich neither you nor your fathers have known,
7some nof the gods of the peoples who are around you, whether near you or far off from you, from the one end of the earth to the other, 8you shall onot yield to him or listen to him, nor pshall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him, nor shall you conceal him. 9But you shall kill him. qYour hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. 10 rYou shall stone him to death with stones, because he sought to draw you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 11And sall Israel shall hear and fear and never again do any such wickedness as this among you.

12If you hear in one of your cities, which the Lord your God is giving you to dwell there, 13that certain tworthless fellows have gone out among you and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which you have not known, 14then you shall inquire and make search and ask udiligently. And behold, if it be true and certain that such an abomination has been done among you, 15you shall surely put the inhabitants of that city to the sword, devoting it to destruction,
That is, setting apart ( devoting) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction)
all who are in it and its cattle, with the edge of the sword.
16You shall gather all its spoil into the midst of its open square and wburn the city and all its spoil with fire, as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. It shall be a xheap forever. It shall not be built again. 17 yNone of the devoted things shall stick to your hand, zthat the Lord may turn from the fierceness of his anger and show you mercy and have compassion on you and multiply you, aaas he swore to your fathers, 18if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, abkeeping all his commandments that I am commanding you today, and doing what is right in the sight of the Lord your God.

14 ajDo not listen to the words of the prophets who are saying to you, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon,’ akfor it is a lie that they are prophesying to you. 15I have not sent them, declares the Lord, but althey are prophesying falsely in my name, with the result that I will drive you out and you will perish, you and the prophets who are prophesying to you.”

16Then I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: amDo not listen to the words of your prophets who are prophesying to you, saying, anBehold, the vessels of the Lord’s house will now shortly be brought back from Babylon,’ aofor it is a lie that they are prophesying to you. 17 apDo not listen to them; aqserve the king of Babylon and live. Why should this city arbecome a desolation? 18If they are prophets, and if the word of the Lord is with them, then aslet them intercede with the Lord of hosts, atthat the vessels that are left in the house of the Lord, in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem may not go to Babylon. 19 auFor thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the pillars, the sea, the stands, and the rest of the vessels that are left in this city, 20which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon did not take away, avwhen he took into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem 21thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, awconcerning the vessels that are left in the house of the Lord, in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem: 22 axThey shall be carried to Babylon ayand remain there azuntil the day when I visit them, declares the Lord. baThen I will bring them back bband restore them to this place.”

This year you shall die, bebecause you have uttered rebellion against the Lord.’”

17In that same year, in the seventh month, the prophet Hananiah died.
