Deuteronomy 23:3-5

3 aNo Ammonite or Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord. Even to the tenth generation, none of them may enter the assembly of the Lord forever, 4 bbecause they did not meet you with bread and with water on the way, when you came out of Egypt, and because they chired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of dMesopotamia, to curse you. 5But the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam; instead the Lord your God turned ethe curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loved you.

Nehemiah 13:23

23In those days also I saw the Jews fwho had married women gof Ashdod, hAmmon, and iMoab.

Isaiah 15

An Oracle Concerning Moab

1An joracle concerning kMoab.

Because lAr of Moab is laid waste in a night,
Moab is undone;
because mKir of Moab is laid waste in a night,
Moab is undone.
2He has gone up to the temple,
Hebrew  the house
and to oDibon,
to the high places
Or temple, even Dibon to the high places
to weep;
over qNebo and over rMedeba
Moab swails.
On every head is tbaldness;
every beard is shorn;
3in the streets they wear sackcloth;
on the housetops and in the squares
everyone wails and melts in tears.
4 uHeshbon and vElealeh cry out;
their voice is heard as far as wJahaz;
therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud;
his soul trembles.
5My heart cries out for Moab;
her fugitives flee to Zoar,
to xEglath-shelishiyah.
For at the yascent of Luhith
they go up weeping;
on the road to zHoronaim
they raise a cry of destruction;
6the waters of aaNimrim
are a desolation;
the grass is withered, the vegetation fails,
the greenery is no more.
7 abTherefore the abundance they have gained
and what they have laid up
they carry away
over the Brook of the Willows.
8For a cry has gone
around the land of Moab;
her wailing reaches to Eglaim;
her wailing reaches to Beer-elim.
9For the waters of acDibon
Dead Sea Scroll, Vulgate (compare Syriac); Masoretic Text Dimon; twice in this verse
are full of blood;
for I will bring upon Dibon even more,
aea lion for those of Moab who escape,
for the remnant of the land.

Isaiah 16

1 afSend the lamb to the ruler of the land,
from agSela, by way of the desert,
to the mount of the daughter of Zion.
2Like fleeing birds,
like a scattered nest,
so are the daughters of Moab
at ahthe fords of the Arnon.
3 Give counsel;
grant justice;
aimake your shade like night
at the height of noon;
shelter the outcasts;
do not reveal the fugitive;
4let ajthe outcasts of Moab
sojourn among you;
be a shelter to them
Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint, Syriac; Masoretic Text  let my outcasts sojourn among you; as for Moab, be a shelter to them

from the destroyer.
When the oppressor is no more,
and destruction has ceased,
and he who tramples underfoot has vanished from the land,
5 althen a throne will be established in steadfast love,
and on it will sit in faithfulness
in the tent of David
one who judges and seeks justice
and is swift to do righteousness.”
6 amWe have heard of the pride of Moab
how proud he is!—
anof his arrogance, his pride, and his insolence;
in his idle boasting he is not right.
7Therefore let Moab wail for Moab,
aolet everyone wail.
Mourn, utterly stricken,
for the apraisin cakes of aqKir-hareseth.
8 For the fields of Heshbon languish,
and arthe vine of Sibmah;
the lords of the nations
have struck down its branches,
which reached to Jazer
and strayed to the desert;
its shoots spread abroad
and passed over the sea.
9Therefore asI weep with atthe weeping of Jazer
for the vine of Sibmah;
I drench you with my tears,
O Heshbon and Elealeh;
for over auyour summer fruit and your harvest
the shout has ceased.
10 avAnd joy and gladness are taken away from awthe fruitful field,
and in the vineyards no axsongs are sung,
no cheers are raised;
no aytreader treads out wine azin the presses;
I have put an end to the shouting.
11Therefore bamy inner parts moan like a lyre for Moab,
and my inmost self for Kir-hareseth.
12And when Moab presents himself, when bbhe wearies himself on bcthe high place, when he comes to his sanctuary to pray, he will not prevail.

13This is the word that the Lord spoke concerning Moab bdin the past. 14But now the Lord has spoken, saying, “In three years, belike the years of a hired worker, the glory of Moab will be brought into contempt, in spite of all his great multitude, and those who remain will be bfvery few and feeble.”

Jeremiah 48

Judgment on Moab

1 bgConcerning Moab.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

Woe to bhNebo, for it is laid waste!
biKiriathaim is put to shame, it is taken;
the fortress is put to shame bjand broken down;
2the renown of Moab is no more.
In bkHeshbon they planned disaster against her:
Come, let us cut her off blfrom being a nation!’
You also, O bmMadmen, shall be brought to silence;
the sword shall pursue you.
3 “A voice! A cry from bnHoronaim,
Desolation and great destruction!’
4Moab is destroyed;
her little ones have made a cry.
5 boFor at the ascent of Luhith
they go up weeping;
Hebrew weeping goes up with weeping

for bqat the descent of Horonaim
they have heard the distressed cry
Septuagint (compare Isaiah 15:5)  heard the cry
of destruction.
6Flee! Save yourselves!
You will be like bsa juniper in the desert!
7For, btbecause you trusted in your works and your treasures,
you also shall be taken;
and buChemosh bvshall go into exile
with bwhis priests and his officials.
8 bxThe destroyer shall come upon every city,
and no city shall escape;
the valley shall perish,
and bythe plain shall be destroyed,
as the Lord has spoken.
9 Give wings to Moab,
for she would fly away;
her cities shall become a desolation,
with no inhabitant in them.
10 bzCursed is he who does cathe work of the Lord with slackness, and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from bloodshed.

11 Moab has been at ease from his youth
and has cbsettled on his dregs;
he has not been emptied from vessel to vessel,
nor has he gone into exile;
so his taste remains in him,
and his scent is not changed.
12Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I shall send to him pourers who will pour him, and empty his vessels and break his
Septuagint, Aquila; Hebrew their
jars in pieces.
13Then cdMoab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as cethe house of Israel was ashamed of cfBethel, their confidence.

14 How do you say, ‘We are heroes
and mighty men of war’?
15The destroyer of cgMoab and his cities has come up,
and the choicest of his young men have chgone down to slaughter,
declares cithe King, cjwhose name is the Lord of hosts.
16The calamity of Moab is near at hand,
and his affliction hastens swiftly.
17 ckGrieve for him, all you who are around him,
and all who know his name;
say, clHow the mighty scepter is broken,
the glorious staff.’
18 cm“Come down from your glory,
and sit on the parched ground,
O inhabitant of cnDibon!
For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you;
he has destroyed your strongholds.
19 coStand by the way cpand watch,
O inhabitant of cqAroer!
Ask him who flees and her who escapes;
say, ‘What has happened?’
20Moab is put to shame, for it is broken;
crwail and cry!
Tell it beside csthe Arnon,
that ctMoab is laid waste.
21Judgment has come upon cuthe tableland, upon Holon, and cvJahzah, and Mephaath, 22and cwDibon, and cxNebo, and Beth-diblathaim, 23and cyKiriathaim, and Beth-gamul, and czBeth-meon, 24and daKerioth, and dbBozrah, and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25 dcThe horn of Moab is cut off, and ddhis arm is broken, declares the Lord.

26 de“Make him drunk, dfbecause he magnified himself against the Lord, so that Moab shall dgwallow in his vomit, dhand he too shall be held in derision. 27 diWas not Israel a derision to you? djWas he found among thieves, that whenever you spoke of him dkyou wagged your head?

28 dlLeave the cities, and dwell in the rock,
O inhabitants of Moab!
Be dmlike the dove that nests
in the sides of the mouth of a gorge.
29 dnWe have heard of the pride of Moab
he is very proud
of his loftiness, his pride, and his arrogance,
and the haughtiness of his heart.
30I know his insolence, declares the Lord;
dohis boasts are false,
his deeds are false.
31 dpTherefore I wail for Moab;
I cry out for all Moab;
for the men of dqKir-hareseth I mourn.
32More than for drJazer I weep for you,
dsO vine of dtSibmah!
duYour branches passed over the sea,
reached to the Sea of dvJazer;
on your summer fruits and your grapes
the destroyer has fallen.
33 dwGladness and joy have been taken away
from the fruitful land of Moab;
I have made the wine cease from the winepresses;
no one treads them with shouts of joy;
the shouting is not the shout of joy.
34 dxFrom the outcry at Heshbon even to Elealeh, as far as Jahaz they utter their voice, from Zoar to dyHoronaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. For the waters of Nimrim also have become desolate. 35And I will bring to an end in Moab, declares the Lord, him who offers sacrifice in dzthe high place and makes offerings to his god. 36Therefore my heart moans for Moab like a flute, and my heart moans like a flute for the men of eaKir-hareseth. ebTherefore the riches they gained have perished.

37 ecFor every head is shaved and every beard cut off. edOn all the hands are gashes, and eearound the waist is sackcloth. 38On all the housetops of Moab and in the squares there is nothing but lamentation, for I have broken Moab like efa vessel for which no one cares, declares the Lord. 39How it is broken! How they wail! egHow Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab ehhas become a derision and a horror to all that are around him.”

40 For thus says the Lord:
Behold, eione shall fly swiftly like an eagle
ejand spread his wings against Moab;
41 ekthe cities shall be taken
and the strongholds seized.
elThe heart of the warriors of Moab shall be in that day
like the heart of ema woman in her birth pains;
42Moab shall be endestroyed and be no longer a people,
because eohe magnified himself against the Lord.
43 epTerror, pit, and snare
are before you, O inhabitant of Moab!

declares the Lord.
44He who flees from the terror
shall fall into the pit,
and he who climbs out of the pit
shall be caught in the snare.
eqFor I will bring these things upon Moab,
the year of their punishment,

declares the Lord.
45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
fugitives stop without strength,
for fire came out from Heshbon,
flame from the house of Sihon;
it has destroyed erthe forehead of Moab,
the crown of esthe sons of tumult.
46 etWoe to you, O Moab!
The people of euChemosh are undone,
for your sons have been taken captive,
and your daughters into captivity.
47 evYet I will restore the fortunes of Moab
in the latter days, declares the Lord.”
Thus far is the judgment on Moab.

Ezekiel 25:1-11

Prophecy Against Ammon

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 ewSon of man, exset your face toward eythe Ammonites and prophesy against them. 3Say to the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord God: ezThus says the Lord God, Because you said, faAha!’ over my fbsanctuary when it was profaned, and over the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and over the house of Judah when they went into exile, 4therefore behold, I am handing you over to fcthe people of the East for a possession, and they shall set their encampments among you and make their dwellings in your midst. They shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk. 5I will make fdRabbah a fepasture for camels and Ammon
Hebrew  and the Ammonites
fga fold for flocks. fhThen you will know that I am the Lord.
6For thus says the Lord God: Because fiyou have clapped your hands fjand stamped your feet and fkrejoiced with all the flmalice within your soul against the land of Israel, 7therefore, behold, fmI have stretched out my hand against you, and fnwill hand you over as plunder to the nations. And I will cut you off from the peoples and will make you perish out of the countries; I will destroy you. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

Prophecy Against Moab and Seir

8Thus says the Lord God: Because foMoab and fpSeir
Septuagint lacks  and Seir
said, ‘Behold, the frhouse of Judah is like all the other nations,’
9therefore fsI will lay open the flank of Moab from the cities, from its cities on its frontier, the glory of the country, ftBeth-jeshimoth, fuBaal-meon, and fvKiriathaim. 10I will give it fwalong with the Ammonites fxto the people of the East as a possession, fythat the Ammonites may be remembered no more among the nations, 11 fzand I will execute judgments upon Moab. gaThen they will know that I am the Lord.

Amos 2:1-3

1Thus says the Lord:

gb“For three transgressions of gcMoab,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
Hebrew  I will not turn it back; also verses 4, 6

because gehe burned to lime
the bones of the king of Edom.
2So I will send a fire upon Moab,
and it shall devour the strongholds of gfKerioth,
and Moab shall die amid uproar,
amid shouting and the sound of the trumpet;
3 ggI will cut off the ruler from its midst,
and will kill ghall its princes
Or officials
with him,”

says the Lord.
