Deuteronomy 31:16-20

16And the Lord said to Moses, aBehold, you are about to lie down with your fathers. Then this people will rise and bwhore after the foreign gods among them in the land that they are entering, and they will cforsake me and dbreak my covenant that I have made with them. 17Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day, and eI will forsake them and fhide my face from them, and they will be devoured. And many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, g‘Have not these evils come upon us because hour God is not among us?’ 18And I will surely hide my face in that day because of all the evil that they have done, because ithey have turned to other gods.

19Now therefore write jthis song and kteach it to the people of Israel. Put it in their mouths, that this song may be la witness for me against the people of Israel. 20For when I have brought them into the land mflowing with milk and honey, which I swore to give to their fathers, and they have eaten and are full and ngrown fat, othey will turn to other gods and serve them, and pdespise me and qbreak my covenant.

Deuteronomy 32:15-21

15 “But rJeshurun grew fat, and skicked;
tyou grew fat, stout, and sleek;
uthen he forsook God vwho made him
and scoffed at wthe Rock of his salvation.
16 xThey stirred him to jealousy with strange gods;
with abominations they provoked him to anger.
17 yThey sacrificed to demons that were no gods,
to gods they had never known,
to znew gods that had come recently,
whom your fathers had never dreaded.
18You were unmindful of aathe Rock that bore
Or fathered
you,
and you acforgot the God who gave you birth.
19 ad“The Lord saw it and spurned them,
because of the provocation of aehis sons and his daughters.
20And he said, af‘I will hide my face from them;
I will see what their end will be,
for they are a perverse generation,
children in whom is no faithfulness.
21 agThey have made me jealous with what is no god;
they have provoked me to anger ahwith their idols.
So aiI will make them jealous with those who are no people;
I will provoke them to anger with aja foolish nation.

Judges 2:11-12

Israel’s Unfaithfulness

11 akAnd the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals. 12 alAnd they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. amThey went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and anbowed down to them. aoAnd they provoked the Lord to anger.

2 Kings 17:7-23

Exile Because of Idolatry

7And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, apwho had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods 8 aqand walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel, arand in the customs that the kings of Israel had practiced. 9And the people of Israel did secretly against the Lord their God things that were not right. They built for themselves high places in all their towns, asfrom watchtower to fortified city. 10They set up for themselves atpillars and Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree, 11and there they made offerings on all the high places, as the nations did whom the Lord carried away before them. And they did wicked things, provoking the Lord to anger, 12and they served idols, auof which the Lord had said to them, “You shall not do this.” 13Yet the Lord avwarned Israel and Judah awby every prophet axand every seer, saying, ayTurn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by my servants the prophets.”

14But they would not listen, azbut were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the Lord their God. 15They despised his statutes baand his covenant that he made with their fathers and the warnings that he gave them. They went after bbfalse idols bcand became false, and they followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom the bdLord had commanded them that they should not do like them. 16And they abandoned all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made for themselves metal images of betwo calves; and they bfmade an Asherah and bgworshiped all the host of heaven and served bhBaal. 17 biAnd they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings
Or made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire
and used bkdivination and blomens and bmsold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger.
18Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but bnthe tribe of Judah only.

19 boJudah also did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the customs that Israel had introduced. 20And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel and afflicted them bpand gave them into the hand of plunderers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

21 bqWhen he had torn Israel from the house of David, brthey made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. And Jeroboam drove Israel from following the Lord bsand made them commit great sin. 22The people of Israel walked in all the sins that Jeroboam did. They did not depart from them, 23until the Lord removed Israel out of his sight, btas he had spoken by all his servants the prophets. buSo Israel was exiled from their own land to Assyria until this day.

Nehemiah 9:25-26

25And they captured bvfortified cities and bwa rich land, and took possession of bxhouses full of all good things, cisterns already hewn, vineyards, olive orchards and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled byand became fat and delighted themselves in bzyour great goodness.

26 ca“Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you cband cast your law behind their back ccand killed your prophets, who cdhad warned them in order to turn them back to you, ceand they committed great blasphemies.

Psalms 78:40-41

40How often they cfrebelled against him in the wilderness
and cggrieved him in chthe desert!
41They citested God again and again
and provoked cjthe Holy One of Israel.
