Deuteronomy 9:7-21

7Remember and do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. aFrom the day you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord. 8Even bat Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, and the Lord was so angry with you that he was ready to destroy you. 9 cWhen I went up the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord made with you, I remained on the mountain dforty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water. 10And ethe Lord gave me the two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them were all the words that the Lord had spoken with you on the mountain out of the midst of the fire fon the day of the assembly. 11And at the end of forty days and forty nights the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. 12Then the Lord said to me, gArise, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you have brought from Egypt have acted corruptly. They have hturned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them; they have made themselves a metal image.’

The Golden Calf

13 i“Furthermore, the Lord said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and behold, it is ja stubborn people. 14 kLet me alone, that I may destroy them and lblot out their name from under heaven. And mI will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’ 15 nSo I turned and came down from the mountain, and othe mountain was burning with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16And pI looked, and behold, you had sinned against the Lord your God. You had made yourselves a golden
Hebrew cast metal
calf. rYou had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you.
17So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them before your eyes. 18Then I slay prostrate before the Lord tas before, forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all the sin that you had committed, uin doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord to provoke him to anger. 19For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure that the Lord bore against you, so that he was ready to destroy you. vBut the Lord listened to me that time also. 20And the Lord was so angry with Aaron that he was ready to destroy him. And I prayed for Aaron also at the same time. 21Then wI took the sinful thing, the calf that you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust. And I threw the dust of it into the brook that ran down from the mountain.

Deuteronomy 31:20

20For when I have brought them into the land xflowing with milk and honey, which I swore to give to their fathers, and they have eaten and are full and ygrown fat, zthey will turn to other gods and serve them, and aadespise me and abbreak my covenant.

Deuteronomy 31:27-29

27For I know how rebellious and acstubborn you are. Behold, even today while I am yet alive with you, adyou have been rebellious against the Lord. How much more after my death! 28Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, that I may speak aethese words in their ears and afcall heaven and earth to witness against them. 29For I know that after my death agyou will surely act corruptly and turn aside from the way that I have commanded you. And ahin the days to come aievil will befall you, because you will do what is evil in the sight of the Lord, ajprovoking him to anger through the work of your hands.”

Nehemiah 9:16-17

16“But they and our fathers akacted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments. 17They refused to obey aland were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, amgracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them.

Nehemiah 9:26

26 an“Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you aoand cast your law behind their back apand killed your prophets, who aqhad warned them in order to turn them back to you, arand they committed great blasphemies.

Nehemiah 9:28-30

28 asBut after they had rest they did evil again before you, and you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies, so that they had dominion over them. Yet when they turned and cried to you, you heard from heaven, atand many times you delivered them according to your mercies. 29 auAnd you warned them in order to turn them back to your law. Yet avthey acted presumptuously and did not obey your commandments, but sinned against your rules, awwhich if a person does them, he shall live by them, axand they turned a stubborn shoulder ayand stiffened their neck and would not obey. 30Many years azyou bore with them baand warned them bbby your Spirit through your prophets. bcYet they would not give ear. bdTherefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.
