Ecclesiastes 2:18-21

The Vanity of Toil

18 I hated ^aall my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must ^bleave it to the man who will come after me, 19 and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 So I ^cturned about and gave my heart up to despair ^dover all the toil of my labors under the sun, 21 because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.

Ecclesiastes 6:2

2 a man ^eto whom ^fGod gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he ^glacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God ^hdoes not give him power to enjoy them, but a stranger enjoys them. This is vanity; ^{▼▼The Hebrew term hebel can refer to a “vapor” or “mere breath”; also verses 4, 9, 11 (see note on 1:2)} it is a grievous evil.

Isaiah 2:12-17

12 ^jFor the Lord of hosts has a day
against all that is proud and lofty,
against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low;
13 against all the ^kcedars of Lebanon,
lofty and lifted up;
and against all the ^loaks of Bashan;
14 against all ^mthe lofty mountains,
and against all the uplifted hills;
15 against every high tower,
and against every fortified wall;
16 against all ⁿthe ships of Tarshish,
and against all the beautiful craft.
17 ^oAnd the haughtiness of man shall be humbled,
and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low,
and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.

Isaiah 23:9

9 The Lord of hosts has purposed it,

to dishonor all the honored of the earth.

Judgment on Ephraim and Jerusalem
