16“When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.”

God Hears Israel’s Groaning

23 dDuring those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel egroaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. fTheir cry for rescue from slavery came up to God.

21and gthey said to them, “The Lord look on you and judge, because you have made us stink in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

Exodus 14:8-12

8And kthe Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the people of Israel while lthe people of Israel were going out defiantly. 9The mEgyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army, and overtook them nencamped at the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.

10When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel ocried out to the Lord. 11They psaid to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? 12Is not this what qwe said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

Exodus 15:9-10

9The enemy said, r‘I will pursue, I will overtake,
I swill divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them.
I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.’
10You tblew with your wind; the usea covered them;
they sank like lead in the mighty waters.

Exodus 17:8-13

Israel Defeats Amalek

8 vThen Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. 9So Moses said to wJoshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with xthe staff of God in my hand.” 10So yJoshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and zHur went up to the top of the hill. 11Whenever Moses aaheld up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12But Moseshands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and abHur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13And acJoshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.
