Exodus 20:1-17

The Ten Commandments

1 ^aAnd ^bGod spoke all these words, saying,

2 ^c“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

3 ^d“You shall have no other gods before ^{▼▼Or besides} me.

4 ^f“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 ^gYou shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am ^ha jealous God, ⁱvisiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands ^{▼▼Or to the thousandth generation} of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7 ^k“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

8 ^l“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 ^mSix days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the ⁿseventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the ^osojourner who is within your gates. 11 For ^pin six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12 ^q“Honor your father and your mother, ^rthat your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

13 ^s“You shall not murder. ^{▼▼The Hebrew word also covers causing human death through carelessness or negligence}

14 ^u“You shall not commit adultery.

15 ^v“You shall not steal.

16 ^w“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

17 ^x“You shall not covet ^yyour neighbor’s house; ^zyou shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Deuteronomy 5:4-21

4 The Lord spoke with you ^aaface to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, 5 ^abwhile I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord. For ^acyou were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said:

12 “‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but ^ahthe seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, ^aithat your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 ^ajYou shall remember that you were a slave ^{▼▼Or servant} in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there ^alwith a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

16 “‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, ^amthat your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
