Exodus 31:14-17

14 You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. ^aWhoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15 ^bSix days shall work be done, but ^cthe seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. ^dWhoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death. 16 Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever. 17 ^eIt is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that ^fin six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and ^gon the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’”

3 And I said to them, “Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot. And while they are still standing guard, let them shut and bar the doors. Appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, some at their guard posts and some in front of their own homes.”

Keep the Sabbath Holy

19 Thus said the Lord to me: “Go and stand in the People’s Gate, by which ^hthe kings of Judah enter and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem, 20 and say: ‘Hear the word of the Lord, ⁱyou kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who enter by these gates. 21 Thus says the Lord: Take care for the sake of your lives, and ^jdo not bear a burden on the Sabbath day or bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem. 22 And do not carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath ^kor do any work, but ^lkeep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your fathers.
