Exodus 32:1

The Golden Calf

1When the people saw that Moses adelayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, bUp, make us gods who shall cgo before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”

Exodus 32:8

8They have turned aside quickly out of the way that dI commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’”

Exodus 32:23

23For ethey said to me, ‘Make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’

Idolatry Forbidden

15 m“Therefore watch yourselves very carefully. Since nyou saw no form on the day that the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, 16beware olest you act corruptly pby making a carved image for yourselves, in the form of any figure, qthe likeness of male or female, 17the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, 18the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth. 19And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see rthe sun and the moon and the stars, sall the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.

Deuteronomy 4:23-25

23 tTake care, lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and umake a carved image, the form of anything that the Lord your God has forbidden you. 24For vthe Lord your God is a consuming fire, wa jealous God.

25When you father children and children’s children, and have grown old in the land, xif you act corruptly by making a carved image in the form of anything, and yby doing what is evil in the sight of the Lord your God, so as to provoke him to anger,

Deuteronomy 5:8

8“‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Deuteronomy 27:15

15 z“‘Cursed be the man who makes a carved or cast metal image, an abomination to the Lord, a thing made by the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ aaAnd all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.’
