The Golden Calf

1When the people saw that Moses adelayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, bUp, make us gods who shall cgo before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” 2So Aaron said to them, “Take off the drings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4 eAnd he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden

calf. And they said, gThese are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”
5When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron hmade a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.” 6And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And ithe people sat down to eat and drink and rose up jto play.

7And the Lord said to Moses, kGo down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have lcorrupted themselves. 8They have turned aside quickly out of the way that mI commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’”

Numbers 15:39

39And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, to do them, nnot to follow

Ezekiel 14:3-4

3 rSon of man, these men have taken their idols into their hearts, and set sthe stumbling block of their iniquity before their faces. tShould I indeed let myself be consulted by them? 4Therefore speak to them and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Any one of the house of Israel who takes his idols into his heart and sets the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and yet comes to the prophet, uI the Lord will answer him as he comes with the multitude of his idols,

Ezekiel 20:8

Acts 7:39-43

39Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and acin their hearts they turned to Egypt, 40saying to Aaron, adMake for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 41And aethey made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and afwere rejoicing in agthe works of their hands. 42But ahGod turned away and aigave them over to worship ajthe host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:

alduring the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
43You took up the tent of amMoloch
and the star of your god Rephan,
the images that you made to worship;
and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’
