Ezekiel 17:3-10

3say, Thus says the Lord God: aA great eagle bwith great wings and long pinions, crich in plumage of many colors, came dto Lebanon eand took the top of the cedar. 4He broke off the topmost of its young twigs and carried it to a land of trade and set it in a city of merchants. 5Then he took of the seed of the land fand planted it in fertile soil.
Hebrew  in a field of seed
He placed it beside abundant waters. hHe set it like a willow twig,
6and it sprouted and became a ilow jspreading vine, and its branches turned toward him, and its roots remained where it stood. So it became a vine and produced branches and put out boughs.

7 k“And there was another great eagle with great wings and much plumage, land behold, this vine bent its roots toward him and shot forth its branches toward him from mthe bed where it was planted, that he might water it. 8 nIt had been planted on good soil by abundant waters, that it might produce branches and bear fruit and become a noble vine.

9Say, Thus says the Lord God: oWill it thrive? Will he not pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, so that it withers, so that all its fresh sprouting leaves wither? It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it from its roots. 10Behold, it is planted; will it thrive? pWill it not utterly wither when the east wind strikes it—wither away on the bed where it sprouted?”

Ezekiel 17:22-24

22Thus says the Lord God: q“I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar and will set it out. rI will break off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and sI myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. 23 tOn the mountain height of Israel will I plant it, that it may bear branches and produce fruit and become a noble cedar. uAnd under it will dwell every kind of bird; in the shade of its branches birds of every sort will nest. 24And all the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord; vI bring low the high tree, and make high the low tree, dry up wthe green tree, and make xthe dry tree flourish. yI am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.”

17But if adsome of the branches were broken off, and you, aealthough a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root
Greek root of richness; some manuscripts richness
of the olive tree,
18do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. 19Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you agstand fast through faith. So ahdo not become proud, but aifear. 21For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. 22Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, ajprovided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise akyou too will be cut off. 23And aleven they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. 24For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.
