The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

9He also told this parable to some iwho trusted jin themselves that they were righteous, kand treated others with contempt: 10Two men lwent up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee, mstanding by himself, prayed
Or  standing, prayed to himself
othus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
12 pI fast twice a week; qI give tithes of all that I get.’ 13But the tax collector, rstanding far off, swould not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but tbeat his breast, saying, ‘God, ube merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For veveryone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

9and be found in him, not having xa righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but ythat which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith

2 Peter 2:20-22

20For if, aaafter they have escaped the defilements of the world abthrough the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, acthe last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For adit would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from aethe holy commandment delivered to them. 22What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The afdog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”
