Ezra 9:5-15

5And at the aevening sacrifice I rose from my fasting, with my garment band my cloak torn, and fell upon my knees cand spread out my hands to the Lord my God, 6saying:

“O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you, my God, for our iniquities dhave risen higher than our heads, and our eguilt has fmounted up to the heavens.
7 gFrom the days of our fathers to this day we have been in great hguilt. And for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been given into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plundering, iand to utter shame, as it is today. 8But now for a brief moment favor has been shown by the Lord our God, to leave us a jremnant and to give us a ksecure hold
Hebrew nail, or tent-pin
within his holy place, that our God may mbrighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our slavery.
9 nFor we are slaves. Yet our God has not forsaken us in our slavery, obut has extended to us his steadfast love before the kings of Persia, to grant us some reviving to set up the house of our God, to repair its ruins, and to give us protection

10“And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments, 11which you commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land that you are entering, to take possession of it, is a land impure with the impurity of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations that have filled it from end to end with qtheir uncleanness. 12 rTherefore do not give your daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace or prosperity, that you may be strong and eat the good of the land sand leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.’ 13And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for tour great guilt, seeing that you, our uGod, have punished us less than our iniquities deserved and have given us such a vremnant as this, 14shall we break your commandments again and wintermarry with the peoples who practice these abominations? Would you not be angry with us xuntil you consumed us, so that there should be no yremnant, nor any to escape? 15O Lord, the God of Israel, you are just, for we are left a zremnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our aaguilt, abfor none can stand before you because of this.”

Nehemiah 9:1-37

The People of Israel Confess Their Sin

1Now on the twenty-fourth day of acthis month the people of Israel were assembled adwith fasting aeand in sackcloth, afand with earth on their heads. 2 agAnd the Israelites
Hebrew  the offspring of Israel
separated themselves from all foreigners and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.
3 aiAnd they stood up in their place and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day; for another quarter of it they made confession and worshiped the Lord their God. 4On the stairs of the Levites stood ajJeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani; and they cried with a loud voice to the Lord their God. 5Then the Levites, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, “Stand up and bless the Lord your God from everlasting to everlasting. akBlessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

6
Septuagint adds And Ezra said
am“You are the Lord, you alone. anYou have made heaven, aothe heaven of heavens, apwith all their host, aqthe earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; arand you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.
7You are the Lord, the God aswho chose Abram and brought him out of atUr of the Chaldeans auand gave him the name Abraham. 8 avYou found his heart faithful before you, awand made with him the covenant to give to his offspring axthe land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite. ayAnd you have kept your promise, for you are righteous.

9 az“And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heard batheir cry at the Red Sea, 10 bband performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that bcthey acted arrogantly against our fathers. And bdyou made a name for yourself, as it is to this day. 11 beAnd you divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land, and you cast their pursuers into the depths, bfas a stone into mighty waters. 12By bga pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go. 13 bhYou came down on Mount Sinai biand spoke with them from heaven and gave them bjright rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments, 14 bkand you made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses your servant. 15 blYou gave them bread from heaven for their hunger and bmbrought water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and you bntold them to go in to possess the land that you had sworn to give them.

16“But they and our fathers boacted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments. 17They refused to obey bpand were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, bqgracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them. 18Even brwhen they had made for themselves a golden
Hebrew metal
calf and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ btand had committed great blasphemies,
19you buin your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. bvThe pillar of cloud to lead them in the way did not depart from them by day, bwnor the pillar of fire by night to light for them the way by which they should go. 20 bxYou gave your good Spirit to instruct them byand did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst. 21 bzForty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.

22“And you gave them kingdoms and peoples and allotted to them every corner. caSo they took possession of the land of Sihon king of Heshbon cband the land of Og king of Bashan. 23You multiplied their children ccas the stars of heaven, and you brought them into the land that you had told their fathers to enter and possess. 24 cdSo the descendants went in and possessed the land, ceand you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hand, with their kings and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they would. 25And they captured cffortified cities and cga rich land, and took possession of chhouses full of all good things, cisterns already hewn, vineyards, olive orchards and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled ciand became fat and delighted themselves in cjyour great goodness.

26 ck“Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you cland cast your law behind their back cmand killed your prophets, who cnhad warned them in order to turn them back to you, coand they committed great blasphemies. 27 cpTherefore you gave them into the hand of their enemies, who made them suffer. cqAnd in the time of their suffering they cried out to you and you heard them from heaven, and according to your great mercies you gave them crsaviors who saved them from the hand of their enemies. 28 csBut after they had rest they did evil again before you, and you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies, so that they had dominion over them. Yet when they turned and cried to you, you heard from heaven, ctand many times you delivered them according to your mercies. 29 cuAnd you warned them in order to turn them back to your law. Yet cvthey acted presumptuously and did not obey your commandments, but sinned against your rules, cwwhich if a person does them, he shall live by them, cxand they turned a stubborn shoulder cyand stiffened their neck and would not obey. 30Many years czyou bore with them daand warned them dbby your Spirit through your prophets. dcYet they would not give ear. ddTherefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. 31Nevertheless, dein your great mercies dfyou did not make an end of them or forsake them, dgfor you are a gracious and merciful God.

32Now, therefore, our God, dhthe great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love, let not all the hardship seem little to you that has come upon us, upon our kings, our princes, our priests, our prophets, our fathers, and all your people, disince the time of the kings of Assyria until this day. 33 djYet you have been righteous in all that has come upon us, for you have dealt faithfully dkand we have acted wickedly. 34Our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers have not kept your law or paid attention to your commandments and your warnings that you gave them. 35Even in their own kingdom, dland amid your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and dmrich land that you set before them, dnthey did not serve you or turn from their wicked works. 36Behold, dowe are slaves this day; in the land that you gave to our fathers to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts, behold, we are slaves. 37 dpAnd its rich yield goes to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and over our livestock as they please, and we are in great distress.

Isaiah 63

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

1 Who is this who comes from dqEdom,
in crimsoned garments from drBozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
dsmarching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
2 Why is your dtapparel red,
and your garments like his duwho treads in the winepress?
3 dv“I have trodden the winepress alone,
dwand from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood
Or  their juice; also verse 6
spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.
4 dyFor the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption
Or the year of my redeemed
had come.
5I looked, but eathere was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
ebI made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

The Lord’s Mercy Remembered

7 I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord,
the praises of the Lord,
according to all that the Lord has granted us,
ecand the great goodness to the house of Israel
that he has granted them according to his compassion,
according to the abundance of his steadfast love.
8For he said, “Surely they are my people,
children who will not deal falsely.”
And he became their Savior.
9 edIn all their affliction he was afflicted,
Or  he did not afflict

and the angel of his presence saved them;
efin his love and in his pity he redeemed them;
eghe lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.
10 ehBut they rebelled
eiand grieved his Holy Spirit;
therefore he turned to be their enemy,
and himself fought against them.
11Then he remembered ejthe days of old,
of Moses and his people.
Or  Then his people remembered the days of old, of Moses

elWhere is he who brought them up out of the sea
with the shepherds of his flock?
Where is he who put in the midst of them
his Holy Spirit,
12who caused his glorious arm
to go at the right hand of Moses,
emwho divided the waters before them
ento make for himself an everlasting name,
13who led them through the depths?
Like a horse in the desert,
they did not stumble.
14Like livestock that go down into the valley,
eothe Spirit of the Lord gave them rest.
So you led your people,
epto make for yourself a glorious name.

Prayer for Mercy

15 eqLook down from heaven and see,
erfrom your holy and beautiful
Or  holy and glorious
habitation.
Where are etyour zeal and your might?
The stirring of your inner parts and your compassion
are held back from me.
16For euyou are our Father,
though Abraham does not know us,
and Israel does not acknowledge us;
you, O Lord, are our Father,
evour Redeemer from of old is your name.
17O Lord, why do you make us wander from your ways
and ewharden our heart, so that we fear you not?
exReturn for the sake of your servants,
the tribes of your heritage.
18 eyYour holy people held possession for a little while;
Or They have dispossessed your holy people for a little while

faour adversaries have trampled down your sanctuary.
19 fbWe have become like those over whom you have never ruled,
like those who are not called by your name.

Isaiah 64

1 fcOh that you would rend the heavens and come down,
fdthat the mountains might quake at your presence
2
Ch 64:1 in Hebrew
as when fire kindles brushwood
and the fire causes water to boil
ffto make your name known to your adversaries,
and that the nations might tremble at your presence!
3 fgWhen you did awesome things that we did not look for,
you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.
4 fhFrom of old no one has heard
or perceived by the ear,
fino eye has seen a God besides you,
who acts for those who wait for him.
5You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,
those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;
in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?
Or  in your ways is continuance, that we might be saved

6 fkWe have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
flWe all fade like a leaf,
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
7 fmThere is no one who calls upon your name,
who rouses himself to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
and have made us melt in
Masoretic Text; Septuagint, Syriac, Targum  have delivered us into
the hand of our iniquities.
8 foBut now, O Lord, you are our Father;
fpwe are the clay, and you are our potter;
fqwe are all the work of your hand.
9 frBe not so terribly angry, O Lord,
fsand remember not iniquity forever.
Behold, please look, we are all your people.
10 ftYour holy cities have become a wilderness;
Zion has become a wilderness,
Jerusalem a desolation.
11 fuOur holy and beautiful
Or  holy and glorious
house,
where our fathers praised you,
has been burned by fire,
and all our pleasant places have become ruins.
12 fwWill you restrain yourself at these things, O Lord?
Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly?

Daniel 9:3-19

3Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by fxprayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. 4I prayed to the Lord my God and fymade confession, saying, fzO Lord, the gagreat and awesome God, who gbkeeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 5 gcwe have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly gdand rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. 6 geWe have not listened to gfyour servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to ggour kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. 7To you, ghO Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, githose who are near and gjthose who are far away, in gkall the lands to which you have driven them, because of glthe treachery that they have committed against you. 8To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because gmwe have sinned against you. 9 gnTo the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him 10 goand have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by gphis servants the prophets. 11 gqAll Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, grrefusing to obey your voice. gsAnd the curse and oath gtthat are written in the Law of guMoses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because gvwe have sinned against him. 12He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against gwour rulers who ruled us,
Or  our judges who judged us
by gybringing upon us a great calamity. gzFor under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem.
13 haAs it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord our God, hbturning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth. 14 hcTherefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, hdfor the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and hewe have not obeyed his voice. 15And now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt hfwith a mighty hand, and hghave made a name for yourself, as at this day, hhwe have sinned, we have done wickedly.

16“O Lord, hiaccording to all your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, hjyour holy hill, hkbecause for our sins, and for hlthe iniquities of our fathers, hmJerusalem and your people have become hna byword among all who are around us. 17Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his pleas for mercy, and for your own sake, O Lord,
Hebrew  for the Lord’s sake
hpmake your face to shine upon hqyour sanctuary, which is desolate.
18 hrO my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see hsour desolations, and htthe city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy. 19O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act. huDelay not, hvfor your own sake, O my God, because hwyour city and hxyour people are called by your name.”
