Abraham’s Death and His Descendants

1Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 hShe bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. 4The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. 5 iAbraham gave all he had to Isaac. 6But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he jsent them away from his son Isaac, eastward kto the east country.

7These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, 175 years. 8Abraham lbreathed his last and mdied in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. 9Isaac and Ishmael nhis sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre, 10the field othat Abraham purchased from the Hittites. pThere Abraham was buried, with Sarah his wife. 11After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac his son. And Isaac settled at qBeer-lahai-roi.

Esau’s Descendants

6Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the members of his household, his livestock, all his beasts, and all his property that he had acquired in the land of Canaan. He went into a land away from his brother Jacob. 7 apFor their possessions were too great for them to dwell together. aqThe land of their sojournings could not support them because of their livestock. 8So Esau settled in arthe hill country of Seir. 9These are the generations of Esau the father of atthe Edomites in the hill country of Seir. 10These are the names of Esau’s sons: auEliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau. 11The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz. 12(Timna was a concubine of Eliphaz, Esau’s son; she bore avAmalek to Eliphaz.) These are the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife. 13These are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. 31 bgThese are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the Israelites. 32Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, the name of his city being Dinhabah. 33Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. 34Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. 35Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his place, the name of his city being Avith. 36Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. 37Samlah died, and Shaul of bhRehoboth on the Euphrates

A Census of Israel’s Warriors

1The Lord spoke to Moses blin the wilderness of Sinai, bmin the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2 bnTake a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, boby fathershouses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head. 3 bpFrom twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go to war, you and Aaron shall list them, bqcompany by company. 4And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each man being the head of the house of his fathers. 5And these are the names of the men who shall assist you. From Reuben, brElizur the son of Shedeur; 6from Simeon, bsShelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; 7from Judah, btNahshon the son of Amminadab; 8from Issachar, buNethanel the son of Zuar; 9from Zebulun, bvEliab the son of Helon; 10from the sons of Joseph, from Ephraim, bwElishama the son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, bxGamaliel the son of Pedahzur; 11from Benjamin, byAbidan the son of Gideoni; 12from Dan, bzAhiezer the son of Ammishaddai; 13from Asher, caPagiel the son of Ochran; 14from Gad, Eliasaph the son of cbDeuel; 15from Naphtali, ccAhira the son of Enan.” 16These were the ones cdchosen from the congregation, cethe chiefs of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.

17Moses and Aaron took these men cfwho had been named, 18and on the first day of the second month, they assembled the whole congregation together, who registered themselves by clans, by fathershouses, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, head by head, 19as the Lord commanded Moses. So he listed them in the wilderness of Sinai.

20The people of cgReuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war: 21those listed of the tribe of Reuben were ch46,500.

22Of the people of Simeon, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, those of them who were listed, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war: 23those listed of the tribe of Simeon were ci59,300.

24Of the people of Gad, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war: 25those listed of the tribe of Gad were cj45,650.

26Of the people of Judah, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 27those listed of the tribe of Judah were ck74,600.

28Of the people of Issachar, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 29those listed of the tribe of Issachar were cl54,400.

30Of the people of Zebulun, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 31those listed of the tribe of Zebulun were cm57,400.

32Of the people of Joseph, namely, of the people of Ephraim, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 33those listed of the tribe of Ephraim were cn40,500.

34Of the people of Manasseh, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 35those listed of the tribe of Manasseh were co32,200.

36Of the people of Benjamin, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 37those listed of the tribe of Benjamin were cp35,400.

38Of the people of Dan, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 39those listed of the tribe of Dan were cq62,700.

40Of the people of Asher, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 41those listed of the tribe of Asher were cr41,500.

42Of the people of Naphtali, their generations, by their clans, by their fathershouses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 43those listed of the tribe of Naphtali were cs53,400.

44 ctThese are those who were listed, whom Moses and Aaron listed with the help of the chiefs of Israel, twelve men, each representing his fathershouse. 45So all those listed of the people of Israel, by their fathershouses, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war in Israel 46all those listed were cu603,550.

Levites Exempted

47But cvthe Levites were not listed along with them by their ancestral tribe. 48For the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 49“Only the tribe of Levi you shall not list, and you shall not take a census of them among the people of Israel. 50 cwBut appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it cxand shall camp around the tabernacle. 51 cyWhen the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. czAnd if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death. 52The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, each man in his own camp and daeach man by his own standard. 53But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no dbwrath on the congregation of the people of Israel. dcAnd the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony.” 54Thus did the people of Israel; they did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses.
