Deuteronomy 1

The Command to Leave Horeb

1These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in hthe Arabah opposite iSuph, between jParan and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. 2It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to kKadesh-barnea. 3 lIn the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them, 4after mhe had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and nOg the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in oEdrei. 5Beyond the Jordan, pin the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law, saying, 6“The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, q‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. 7Turn and take your journey, and go to rthe hill country of the Amorites and to all their neighbors in sthe Arabah, tin the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negeb and uby the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. 8See, I have set the land before you. Go in and take possession of the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, vto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.’

Leaders Appointed

9“At that time wI said to you, ‘I am not able to bear you by myself. 10The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, xyou are today as numerous as the stars of heaven. 11 yMay the Lord, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, zas he has promised you! 12 aaHow can I bear by myself the weight and burden of you and your strife? 13 abChoose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ 14And you answered me, ‘The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’ 15So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, acand set them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers, throughout your tribes. 16And I charged your judges at that time, ‘Hear the cases between your brothers, and adjudge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him. 17 aeYou shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for afthe judgment is God’s. And the case that is too hard for you, you shall agbring to me, and I will hear it.’ 18And I commanded you at that time all the things that you should do.

Israel’s Refusal to Enter the Land

19“Then we set out from Horeb and ahwent through all that great and terrifying wilderness that you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us. And aiwe came to Kadesh-barnea. 20And I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. 21See, the Lord your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has told you. ajDo not fear or be dismayed.’ 22Then all of you came near me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, that they may explore the land for us and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up and the cities into which we shall come.’ 23The thing seemed good to me, and akI took twelve men from you, one man from each tribe. 24And althey turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the Valley of Eshcol and spied it out. 25And they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land and brought it down to us, and brought us word again and said, ‘It is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us.’

26Yet you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. 27And amyou murmured in your tents and said, ‘Because the Lord anhated us he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, aoto give us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28Where are we going up? apOur brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, aq“The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we have seen arthe sons of the Anakim there.”’ 29Then I said to you, ‘Do not be in dread or afraid of them. 30The Lord your God who goes before you aswill himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the Lord your God atcarried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ 32Yet in spite of this word auyou did not believe the Lord your God, 33 avwho went before you in the way awto seek you out a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go.

The Penalty for Israel’s Rebellion

34“And the Lord heard your words and was angered, and he swore, 35 axNot one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers, 36 ayexcept Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it, and to him and to his children I will give the land on which he has trodden, because he has wholly followed the Lord!’ 37Even with me azthe Lord was angry on your account and said, ‘You also shall not go in there. 38 baJoshua the son of Nun, bbwho stands before you, he shall enter. bcEncourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. 39And as for bdyour little ones, who you said would become a prey, and your children, who today behave no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there. And to them I will give it, and they shall possess it. 40But as for you, bfturn, and journey into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea.’

41“Then you answered me, bg‘We have sinned against the Lord. We ourselves will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And every one of you fastened on his weapons of war and thought it easy to go up into the hill country. 42And the Lord said to me, bhSay to them, Do not go up or fight, bifor I am not in your midst, lest you be defeated before your enemies.’ 43So I spoke to you, and you would not listen; but you rebelled against the command of the Lord and bjpresumptuously went up into the hill country. 44 bkThen the Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you blas bees do and beat you down in Seir as far as bmHormah. 45And you returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord did not listen to your voice or give ear to you. 46So bnyou remained at Kadesh many days, the days that you remained there.

Deuteronomy 31:8

8It is the Lord bowho goes before you. He will be with you; bphe will not leave you or forsake you. bqDo not fear or be dismayed.”

Joshua 1:5

5 brNo man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just bsas I was with Moses, so btI will be with you. buI will not leave you or forsake you.

Joshua 1:9

9Have I not commanded you? bvBe strong and courageous. bwDo not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 3:7

7The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to bxexalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, byas I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

Joshua 23:14

14“And now bzI am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that canot one word has failed of all the good things
Or words; also twice in verse 15
that the Lord your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.

Joshua 24

The Covenant Renewal at Shechem

1Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel ccto Shechem and cdsummoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And cethey presented themselves before God. 2And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Long ago, cfyour fathers lived beyond the Euphrates,
Hebrew  the River
Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and chthey served other gods.
3 ciThen I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and cjled him through all the land of Canaan, and made his offspring many. ckI gave him Isaac. 4And to Isaac I gave clJacob and Esau. cmAnd I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, cnbut Jacob and his children went down to Egypt. 5 coAnd I sent Moses and Aaron, cpand I plagued Egypt with what I did in the midst of it, and cqafterward I brought you out.

6“‘Then crI brought your fathers out of Egypt, and csyou came to the sea. ctAnd the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea. 7 cuAnd when they cried to the Lord, cvhe put darkness between you and the Egyptians cwand made the sea come upon them and cover them; cxand your eyes saw what I did in Egypt. cyAnd you lived in the wilderness a long time. 8Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the other side of the Jordan. czThey fought with you, and I gave them into your hand, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you. 9 daThen Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel. dbAnd he sent and invited Balaam the son of Beor to curse you, 10 dcbut I would not listen to Balaam. ddIndeed, he blessed you. So I delivered you out of his hand. 11 deAnd you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, dfand the leaders of Jericho fought against you, and also dgthe Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And I gave them into your hand. 12And I sent dhthe hornet before you, which drove them out before you, the two kings of the Amorites; it was dinot by your sword or by your bow. 13I gave you a land on which you had not labored djand cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.’

Choose Whom You Will Serve

14 dk“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. dlPut away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 dmAnd if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, dnchoose this day whom you will serve, whether dothe gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or dpthe gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. dqBut as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

16Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods, 17for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed. 18And the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”

19But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is dra holy God. He is dsa jealous God; dthe will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 20 duIf you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then dvhe will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.” 21And the people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the Lord.” 22Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that dwyou have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” 23He said, “Then dxput away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel.” 24And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.” 25So Joshua dymade a covenant with the people that day, and put in place dzstatutes and rules for them at Shechem. 26And Joshua eawrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. And ebhe took a large stone and set it up there ecunder the terebinth that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. 27And Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, edthis stone shall be a witness against us, for eeit has heard all the words of the Lord that he spoke to us. Therefore it shall be a witness against you, lest you deal falsely with your God.” 28So Joshua efsent the people away, every man to his inheritance.

Joshua’s Death and Burial

29 egAfter these things Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being 110 years old. 30And they buried him in his own inheritance at ehTimnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash.

31 eiIsrael served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua ejand had known all the work that the Lord did for Israel.

32 ekAs for the bones of Joseph, which the people of Israel brought up from Egypt, they buried them at Shechem, in the piece of land elthat Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money.
Hebrew  for a hundred qesitah; a unit of money of unknown value
It became an inheritance of the descendants of Joseph.

33And Eleazar the son of Aaron died, and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of enPhinehas his son, which had been given him in eothe hill country of Ephraim.
