12 cSo Sarah laughed to herself, saying, dAfter I am worn out, and emy lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” 13The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ 14 fIs anything too hard
Or wonderful
for the Lord? hAt the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”
15But Sarah denied it,
Or acted falsely
saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

Hannah’s Prayer

1And Hannah prayed and said,

m“My heart exults in the Lord;
nmy horn is exalted in the Lord.
My mouth derides my enemies,
because oI rejoice in your salvation.
2 p“There is none holy like the Lord:
for there is none besides you;
there is qno rock like our God.
3Talk no more so very proudly,
let not arrogance come from your mouth;
for the Lord is a God of knowledge,
and by him actions are weighed.
4 rThe bows of the mighty are broken,
but the feeble bind on strength.
5Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger.
sThe barren has borne seven,
tbut she who has many children is forlorn.
6 uThe Lord kills and brings to life;
he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
7 vThe Lord makes poor and makes rich;
whe brings low and he exalts.
8 xHe raises up the poor from the dust;
he lifts the needy from the ash heap
yto make them sit with princes
and inherit a seat of honor.
zFor the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
and on them he has set the world.
9 aa“He will guard the feet of his faithful ones,
but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness,
for not by might shall a man prevail.
10 abThe adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces;
acagainst them he will thunder in heaven.
adThe Lord will judge the ends of the earth;
he will give strength to his king
aeand exalt the horn of his anointed.”

Psalms 113:9

9He afgives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.
agPraise the Lord!

Psalms 126:2

2Then our ahmouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
ai“The Lord has done great things for them.”

Isaiah 49:15

15 aj“Can a woman forget her nursing child,
that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget,
yet I will not forget you.

Isaiah 49:21

21Then you will say in your heart:
Who has borne me these?
akI was bereaved and barren,
exiled and put away,
but who has brought up these?
Behold, I was left alone;
from where have these come?’”
