Genesis 18:22-32

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

22 aSo the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham bstill stood before the Lord. 23Then Abraham drew near and said, c“Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, dso that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! eShall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” 26And the Lord said, fIf I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

27Abraham answered and said, gBehold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” 29Again he spoke to him and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” 30Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.” 31He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.” 32Then he said, hOh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.”

7 Though our iniquities testify against us,
act, O Lord, ofor your name’s sake;
pfor our backslidings are many;
qwe have sinned against you.
8 rO you hope of Israel,
its savior in time of trouble,
why should you be like a stranger in the land,
like a traveler who turns aside to tarry for a night?
9Why should you be like a man confused,
slike a mighty warrior who cannot save?
Yet tyou, O Lord, are in the midst of us,
and uwe are called by your name;
vdo not leave us.”
10 Thus says the Lord concerning this people:
“They have loved to wander thus;
they have not restrained their feet;
wtherefore the Lord does not accept them;
xnow he will remember their iniquity
and punish their sins.”
11The Lord said to me: y“Do not pray for the welfare of this people.

21Do not spurn us, abfor your name’s sake;
do not dishonor your glorious throne;
acremember and do not break your covenant with us.
22Are there any among adthe false gods of the nations aethat can bring rain?
Or can the heavens give showers?
Are you not he, O Lord our God?
We set our hope on you,
affor you do all these things.
