Genesis 18:25-32

25Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, aso that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! bShall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” 26And the Lord said, cIf I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

27Abraham answered and said, dBehold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” 29Again he spoke to him and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” 30Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.” 31He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.” 32Then he said, eOh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.”

Moses Intercedes for the People

13But kMoses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, 14and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. lThey have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people. For you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and myour cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, 16‘It is because the Lord nwas not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’ 17And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, 18 o‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, pvisiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’ 19Please qpardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just ras you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.”

Joshua 7:8-9
