forty shekels
A  shekel was about 2/5 ounce or 11 grams
of silver. Even their servants lorded it over the people. But I did not do so, gbecause of the fear of God.

Job 1:1-8

Job’s Character and Wealth

1There was a man in the land of hUz whose name was iJob, and that man was jblameless and upright, one who kfeared God and lturned away from evil. 2There were born to him mseven sons and three daughters. 3He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all nthe people of the east. 4His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and oconsecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and poffer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and qcursed
The Hebrew word bless is used euphemistically for curse in 1:5, 11; 2:5, 9
God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.

Satan Allowed to Test Job

6Now there was a day when sthe sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and tSatan
Hebrew the Accuser or the Adversary; so throughout chapters 1–2
also came among them.
7The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From vgoing to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” 8And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you wconsidered my xservant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, ya blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?”

Job 28:28

28And he said to man,
Behold, zthe fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,
and to aaturn away from evil is understanding.’”

Proverbs 8:13

13 abThe fear of the Lord is achatred of evil.
adPride and arrogance and the way of evil
and aeperverted speech I hate.

Proverbs 14:16

16 afOne who is wise is cautious
Or fears [the Lord]
and ahturns away from evil,
but a fool is reckless and careless.

Proverbs 14:27

27The fear of the Lord is aia fountain of life,
that one may ajturn away from the snares of death.

2 Corinthians 7:1

1Since we have these promises, beloved, aklet us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body
Greek flesh
and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.
