Genesis 36:1-19

Esau’s Descendants

1 These are the generations of Esau (that is, ^bEdom). 2 Esau ^ctook his wives from the Canaanites: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, ^dOholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter ^{▼▼Hebrew; Samaritan, Septuagint, Syriac son; also verse 14} of Zibeon the Hivite, 3 and ^fBasemath, Ishmael’s daughter, the sister of Nebaioth. 4 And Adah bore to Esau, ^gEliphaz; Basemath bore Reuel; 5 and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These are the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.

6 Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the members of his household, his livestock, all his beasts, and all his property that he had acquired in the land of Canaan. He went into a land away from his brother Jacob. 7 ^hFor their possessions were too great for them to dwell together. ⁱThe land of their sojournings could not support them because of their livestock. 8 So Esau settled in ^jthe hill country of Seir. ( ^kEsau is Edom.)

9 These are the generations of Esau the father of ^lthe Edomites in the hill country of Seir. 10 These are the names of Esau’s sons: ^mEliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau. 11 The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz. 12 (Timna was a concubine of Eliphaz, Esau’s son; she bore ⁿAmalek to Eliphaz.) These are the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife. 13 These are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife. 14 These are the sons of ^oOholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau’s wife: she bore to Esau Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.

15 These are ^pthe chiefs of the sons of Esau. ^qThe sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau: the chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, 16 Korah, Gatam, and Amalek; these are the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Adah. 17 These are the sons of ^rReuel, Esau’s son: the chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah; these are the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife. 18 These are the sons of ^sOholibamah, Esau’s wife: the chiefs Jeush, Jalam, and Korah; these are the chiefs born of Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau’s wife. 19 These are the sons of Esau ( ^tthat is, Edom), and these are their chiefs.

Isaiah 34

Judgment on the Nations

1 Draw near, ^uO nations, to hear,
and give attention, O peoples!
Let the earth hear, and all that fills it;
the world, and all that comes from it.
2 For the Lord is enraged against all the nations,
and furious against all their host;
he has ^vdevoted them to destruction, ^{▼▼That is, set apart ( devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); also verse 5} has given them over for slaughter.
3 Their slain shall be cast out,
and ^xthe stench of their corpses shall rise;
^ythe mountains shall flow with their blood.
4 ^zAll the host of heaven shall rot away,
and the skies roll up like a scroll.
All their host shall fall,
as leaves fall from the vine,
like leaves falling from the fig tree.
5 For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens;
behold, it descends for judgment upon ^aaEdom,
upon the people ^abI have devoted to destruction.
6 The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood;
it is gorged with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
^acFor the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 ^adWild oxen shall ^aefall with them,
and ^afyoung steers with ^agthe mighty bulls.
Their land shall drink its fill of blood,
and their soil shall be gorged with fat.
8 ^ahFor the Lord has a day of vengeance,
a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
9 ^aiAnd the streams of Edom ^{▼▼Hebrew her streams} shall be turned into pitch,
and her soil into sulfur;
her land shall become burning pitch.
10 Night and day ^akit shall not be quenched;
^alits smoke shall go up forever.
^amFrom generation to generation it shall lie waste;
none shall pass through it forever and ever.
11 ^anBut the hawk and the porcupine ^{▼▼The identity of the animals rendered hawk and porcupine is uncertain} shall possess it,
the owl and the raven shall dwell in it.
^apHe shall stretch the line of ^aqconfusion ^{▼▼Hebrew formlessness} over it,
and the plumb line of emptiness.
12 Its nobles—there is no one there to call it a kingdom,
and all its princes shall be nothing.
13 ^asThorns shall grow over its strongholds,
nettles and thistles in its fortresses.
It shall be the haunt of ^atjackals,
an abode for ostriches. ^{▼▼Or owls}
14 ^avAnd wild animals shall meet with hyenas;
the wild goat shall cry to his fellow;
indeed, there the night bird ^{▼▼Identity uncertain} settles
and finds for herself a resting place.
15 There the owl nests and lays
and hatches and gathers her young in her shadow;
indeed, there ^axthe hawks are gathered,
each one with her mate.
16 Seek and read from the book of the Lord:
Not one of these shall be missing;
none shall be without her mate.
For the mouth of the Lord has commanded,
and his Spirit has gathered them.
17 ^ayHe has cast the lot for them;
his hand has portioned it out to them with the line;
they shall possess it forever;
from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

Isaiah 63:1-6

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

1 Who is this who comes from ^azEdom,
in crimsoned garments from ^baBozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
^bbmarching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
2 Why is your ^bcapparel red,
and your garments like his ^bdwho treads in the winepress?
3 ^be“I have trodden the winepress alone,
^bfand from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood ^{▼▼Or their juice; also verse 6} spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.
4 ^bhFor the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption ^{▼▼Or the year of my redeemed} had come.
5 I looked, but ^bjthere was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6 I trampled down the peoples in my anger;

Ezekiel 25

Prophecy Against Ammon

1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 ^bl“Son of man, ^bmset your face toward ^bnthe Ammonites and prophesy against them. 3 Say to the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord God: ^boThus says the Lord God, Because you said, ^bp‘Aha!’ over my ^bqsanctuary when it was profaned, and over the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and over the house of Judah when they went into exile, 4 therefore behold, I am handing you over to ^brthe people of the East for a possession, and they shall set their encampments among you and make their dwellings in your midst. They shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk. 5 I will make ^bsRabbah a ^btpasture for camels and Ammon ^{▼▼Hebrew and the Ammonites} ^bva fold for flocks. ^bwThen you will know that I am the Lord. 6 For thus says the Lord God: Because ^bxyou have clapped your hands ^byand stamped your feet and ^bzrejoiced with all the ^camalice within your soul against the land of Israel, 7 therefore, behold, ^cbI have stretched out my hand against you, and ^ccwill hand you over as plunder to the nations. And I will cut you off from the peoples and will make you perish out of the countries; I will destroy you. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

Prophecy Against Moab and Seir

8 “Thus says the Lord God: Because ^cdMoab and ^ceSeir ^{▼▼Septuagint lacks and Seir} said, ‘Behold, the ^cghouse of Judah is like all the other nations,’ 9 therefore ^chI will lay open the flank of Moab from the cities, from its cities on its frontier, the glory of the country, ^ciBeth-jeshimoth, ^cjBaal-meon, and ^ckKiriathaim. 10 I will give it ^clalong with the Ammonites ^cmto the people of the East as a possession, ^cnthat the Ammonites may be remembered no more among the nations, 11 ^coand I will execute judgments upon Moab. ^cpThen they will know that I am the Lord.

Prophecy Against Edom

12 “Thus says the Lord God: Because ^cqEdom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended ^crin taking vengeance on them, 13 therefore thus says the Lord God, ^csI will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from ^ctTeman even to ^cuDedan they shall fall by the sword. 14 And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom ^cvby the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and ^cwthey shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

Prophecy Against Philistia

15 “Thus says the Lord God: Because ^cxthe Philistines ^cyacted revengefully and took vengeance ^czwith malice of soul to destroy in never-ending enmity, 16 therefore thus says the Lord God, ^daBehold, I will stretch out my hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off ^dbthe Cherethites and destroy the rest of the seacoast. 17 I will execute great vengeance on them ^dcwith wrathful rebukes. ^ddThen they will know that I am the Lord, when I lay my vengeance upon them.”

Ezekiel 35

Prophecy Against Mount Seir

1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 ^de“Son of man, ^dfset your face ^dgagainst ^dhMount Seir, and prophesy against it, 3 and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: ^diBehold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and ^djI will stretch out my hand against you, ^dkand I will make you a desolation and a waste. 4 ^dlI will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5 Because ^dmyou cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword ^dnat the time of their calamity, ^doat the time of their final punishment, 6 therefore, ^dpas I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; ^dqbecause you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 ^drI will make Mount Seir a waste ^dsand a desolation, and I will cut off from it ^dtall who come and go. 8 And I will fill ^duits mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all ^dvyour ravines ^dwthose slain with the sword shall fall. 9 ^dxI will make you a perpetual desolation, and ^dyyour cities shall not be inhabited. Then ^dzyou will know that I am the Lord.

10 “Because you said, ^ea‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and ^ebwe will take possession of them’—although the ^ecLord was there— 11 therefore, ^edas I live, declares the Lord God, I will deal with you ^eeaccording to the anger and ^efenvy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And ^egI will make myself known among them, when I judge you. 12 And you shall know that I am the Lord.

^eh“I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate; ^eithey are given us to devour.’ 13 And ^ejyou magnified yourselves against me ^ekwith your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14 Thus says the Lord God: ^elWhile the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15 As you ^emrejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, ^enMount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then ^eothey will know that I am the Lord.
