Genesis 29:32-35

32 And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben, ^{▼▼ Reuben means See, a son} for she said, “Because the Lord ^bhas looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.” 33 She conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Because the Lord has heard that I am hated, he has given me this son also.” And she called his name Simeon. ^{▼▼ Simeon sounds like the Hebrew for heard} 34 Again she conceived and bore a son, and said, “Now this time my husband will be ^dattached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi. ^{▼▼ Levi sounds like the Hebrew for attached} 35 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she called his name ^fJudah. ^{▼▼ Judah sounds like the Hebrew for praise} Then she ceased bearing.

Genesis 30:1-24

1 When Rachel saw that ^hshe bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister. She said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I shall die!” 2 Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in the place of God, ⁱwho has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?” 3 Then she said, “Here is my servant ^jBilhah; go in to her, so that she may give birth ^kon my behalf, ^{▼▼Hebrew on my knees} that even I may have children ^{▼▼Hebrew be built up, which sounds like the Hebrew for children} through her.” 4 So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob went in to her. 5 And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. 6 Then Rachel said, “God has ⁿjudged me, and has also heard my voice and given me a son.” Therefore she called his name Dan. ^{▼▼ Dan sounds like the Hebrew for judged} 7 Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. 8 Then Rachel said, “With mighty wrestlings ^{▼▼Hebrew With wrestlings of God} I have wrestled with my sister and have prevailed.” So she called his name ^qNaphtali. ^{▼▼ Naphtali sounds like the Hebrew for wrestling}

9 When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah and ^sgave her to Jacob as a wife. 10 Then Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son. 11 And Leah said, ^t“Good fortune has come!” so she called his name ^uGad. ^{▼▼ Gad sounds like the Hebrew for good fortune} 12 Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 And Leah said, “Happy am I! 14 In the days of wheat harvest Reuben went and found ^ymandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.” 15 But she said to her, “Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes also?” Rachel said, “Then he may lie with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.” 16 When Jacob came from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come in to me, for I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he lay with her that night. 17 And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Leah said, “God has given me my wages because I gave my servant to my husband.” So she called his name Issachar. ^{▼▼ Issachar sounds like the Hebrew for wages, or hire}

19 And Leah conceived again, and she bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 Then Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good endowment; now my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” So she called his name ^aaZebulun. ^{▼▼ Zebulun sounds like the Hebrew for honor} 21 Afterward she bore a daughter and called her name Dinah.

22 Then God ^acremembered Rachel, and God listened to her and ^adopened her womb. 23 She conceived and bore a son and said, “God has taken away ^aemy reproach.” 24 And she called his name Joseph, ^{▼▼ Joseph means May he add, and sounds like the Hebrew for taken away} saying, ^ag“May the Lord add to me another son!”

Genesis 35:16-20

The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac

16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. When they were still some distance ^{▼▼Or about two hours’ distance} from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor, and she had hard labor. 17 And when her labor was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for ^aiyou have another son.” 18 And as her soul was departing (for she was dying), she called his name Ben-oni; ^{▼▼ Ben-oni could mean son of my sorrow, or son of my strength} ^akbut his father called him Benjamin. ^{▼▼ Benjamin means son of the right hand} 19 So ^amRachel died, and she was buried on the way to ^anEphrath (that is, Bethlehem), 20 and Jacob set up a pillar over her tomb. It is ^aothe pillar of Rachel’s tomb, which is there to this day.

Genesis 46:8-27

16 The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. 17 ^ayThe sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, with Serah their sister. And the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel. 18 ^azThese are the sons of Zilpah, ^bawhom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and these she bore to Jacob—sixteen persons.

19 The sons of Rachel, Jacob’s wife: Joseph and Benjamin. 20 And ^bbto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera the priest of ^bcOn, bore to him. 21 And ^bdthe sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. 22 These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob—fourteen persons in all.

23 The son ^{▼▼Hebrew sons} of Dan: Hushim. 24 ^bfThe sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. 25 ^bgThese are the sons of Bilhah, ^bhwhom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and these she bore to Jacob—seven persons in all.

26 All the persons belonging to Jacob who came into Egypt, who were his own descendants, not including Jacob’s sons’ wives, were sixty-six persons in all. 27 And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two. ^biAll the persons of the house of Jacob who came into Egypt were seventy.

Census of the New Generation

1 ^bjAfter the plague, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron, the priest, 2 ^bk“Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, all in Israel who are able to go to war.” 3 And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them ^blin the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, 4 “Take a census of the people, ^{▼▼Take a census of the people is implied (compare verse 2)} from twenty years old and upward,” as the Lord ^bncommanded Moses. The people of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt were:

5 ^boReuben, the firstborn of Israel; the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites; 6 of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites. 7 These are the clans of the Reubenites, and those listed were ^bp43,730. 8 And the sons of Pallu: Eliab. 9 The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram, ^bqchosen from the congregation, who contended against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they contended against the Lord 10 and ^brthe earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, when the fire devoured 250 men, and ^bsthey became a warning. 11 But ^btthe sons of Korah did not die.

12 The sons of ^buSimeon according to their clans: of Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; of Jachin, the clan of the Jachinites; 13 of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites. 14 These are the clans of the Simeonites, ^bv22,200.

15 The sons of ^bwGad according to their clans: of Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the clan of the Haggites; of Shuni, the clan of the Shunites; 16 of Ozni, the clan of the Oznites; of Eri, the clan of the Erites; 17 of Arod, the clan of the Arodites; of Areli, the clan of the Arelites. 18 These are the clans of the sons of Gad as they were listed, ^bx40,500.

19 The sons of ^byJudah were Er and Onan; and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. 20 And the sons of Judah according to their clans were: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; of Perez, the clan of the Perezites; of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites. 21 And the sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the clan of the Hamulites. 22 These are the clans of Judah as they were listed, ^bz76,500.

23 The sons of ^caIssachar according to their clans: of Tola, the clan of the Tolaites; of Puvah, the clan of the Punites; 24 of Jashub, the clan of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the clan of the Shimronites. 25 These are the clans of Issachar as they were listed, ^cb64,300.

26 The sons of ^ccZebulun, according to their clans: of Sered, the clan of the Seredites; of Elon, the clan of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites. 27 These are the clans of the Zebulunites as they were listed, ^cd60,500.

28 The sons of ^ceJoseph according to their clans: Manasseh and Ephraim. 29 ^cfThe sons of Manasseh: of ^cgMachir, the clan of the Machirites; and Machir was the father of Gilead; ^chof Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites. 30 These are the sons of Gilead: of Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites; of Helek, the clan of the Helekites; 31 and of Asriel, the clan of the Asrielites; and of Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites; 32 and of Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites; and of Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites. 33 Now ^ciZelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters. And the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 34 These are the clans of Manasseh, and those listed were ^cj52,700.

35 These are the sons of Ephraim according to their clans: of Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites; of Becher, the clan of the Becherites; of Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites. 36 And these are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the clan of the Eranites. 37 These are the clans of the sons of Ephraim as they were listed, ^ck32,500. These are the sons of Joseph according to their clans.

38 The sons of ^clBenjamin according to their clans: of Bela, the clan of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the clan of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the clan of the Ahiramites; 39 of Shephupham, the clan of the Shuphamites; of Hupham, the clan of the Huphamites. 40 And the sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: of Ard, the clan of the Ardites; of Naaman, the clan of the Naamites. 41 These are the sons of Benjamin according to their clans, and those listed were ^cm45,600.

42 These are the sons of ^cnDan according to their clans: of Shuham, the clan of the Shuhamites. These are the clans of Dan according to their clans. 43 All the clans of the Shuhamites, as they were listed, were ^co64,400.

44 The sons of ^cpAsher according to their clans: of Imnah, the clan of the Imnites; of Ishvi, the clan of the Ishvites; of Beriah, the clan of the Beriites. 45 Of the sons of Beriah: of Heber, the clan of the Heberites; of Malchiel, the clan of the Malchielites. 46 And the name of the daughter of Asher was Serah. 47 These are the clans of the sons of Asher as they were listed, ^cq53,400.

48 The sons of ^crNaphtali according to their clans: of Jahzeel, the clan of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the clan of the Gunites; 49 of Jezer, the clan of the Jezerites; of Shillem, the clan of the Shillemites. 50 These are the clans of Naphtali according to their clans, and those listed were ^cs45,400.

51 This was the list of the people of Israel, ^ct601,730.

52 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 53 ^cu“Among these the land shall be divided for inheritance according to the number of names. 54 ^cvTo a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance; every tribe shall be given its inheritance in proportion to its list. 55 But the land shall be ^cwdivided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. 56 Their inheritance shall be divided according to lot between the larger and the smaller.”

57 ^cxThis was the list of the Levites according to their clans: of Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites; of Merari, the clan of the Merarites. 58 These are the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, the clan of the Korahites. And Kohath was the father of Amram. 59 The name of Amram’s wife was ^cyJochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. And she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and Miriam their sister. 60 ^czAnd to Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 61 ^daBut Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord. 62 And those listed were ^db23,000, every male from a month old and upward. For ^dcthey were not listed among the people of Israel, because ^ddthere was no inheritance given to them among the people of Israel.

63 These were those listed by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who listed the people of Israel ^dein the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. 64 ^dfBut among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had said of them, ^dg“They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, ^dhexcept Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
