3 Reuben, you are lmy firstborn,
my might, and the mfirstfruits of my strength,
preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power.
4Unstable as water, you shall not have preeminence,
because you nwent up to your father’s bed;
then you defiled it—he went up to my couch!
5 oSimeon and Levi are brothers;
weapons pof violence are their swords.
6Let my soul come not into their council;
qO my glory, rbe not joined to their company.
For in their anger they killed men,
and in their willfulness they shamstrung oxen.
7Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce,
and their wrath, for it is cruel!
I will tdivide them in Jacob
and scatter them in Israel.
8 Judah, uyour brothers shall praise you;
vyour hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
wyour father’s sons shall bow down before you.
9Judah is xa lion’s cub;
from the prey, my son, you have gone up.
yHe stooped down; he crouched as a lion
and as a lioness; who dares rouse him?
10The zscepter shall not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff aafrom between his feet,
until tribute comes to him;
By a slight revocalization; a slight emendation yields (compare Septuagint, Syriac, Targum)  until he comes to whom it belongs; Hebrew until Shiloh comes, or until he comes to Shiloh

and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
11Binding his foal to the vine
and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,
he has washed his garments in wine
and his vesture in the blood of grapes.
12His aceyes are darker than wine,
and his teeth whiter than milk.
13 adZebulun shall dwell at the aeshore of the sea;
he shall become a haven for ships,
and his border shall be at Sidon.
14 afIssachar is a strong donkey,
crouching between the sheepfolds.
Or  between its saddlebags

15He saw that a resting place was good,
and that the land was pleasant,
so he bowed his shoulder to bear,
and ahbecame a servant at forced labor.

An alarm is to be blown whenever they are to set out. 7But when the assembly is to be gathered together, cfyou shall blow a long blast, but you shall not cgsound an alarm. 8 chAnd the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets. The trumpets shall be to you for a perpetual statute throughout your generations. 9And ciwhen you go to war in your land against the adversary who cjoppresses you, then you shall cksound an alarm with the trumpets, that you may be clremembered before the Lord your God, and you shall be saved from your enemies. 10 cmOn the day of your gladness also, and at your appointed feasts and cnat the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings. They shall be coa reminder of you before your God: I am the Lord your God.”

Israel Leaves Sinai

11In the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, cpthe cloud lifted from over the tabernacle of the testimony, 12and the people of Israel cqset out by stages from the crwilderness of Sinai. And the cloud settled down in the cswilderness of Paran. 13They set out for the first time ctat the command of the Lord by Moses. 14The standard of the camp of the people of Judah set out cufirst by their companies, and over their company was cvNahshon the son of Amminadab. 15And over the company of the tribe of the people of Issachar was Nethanel the son of Zuar. 16And over the company of the tribe of the people of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon.

17And when cwthe tabernacle was taken down, the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, cxwho carried the tabernacle, set out. 18And cythe standard of the camp of Reuben set out by their companies, and over their company was czElizur the son of Shedeur. 19And over the company of the tribe of the people of Simeon was daShelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 20And over the company of the tribe of the people of Gad was dbEliasaph the son of dcDeuel.

21Then the Kohathites set out, ddcarrying the holy things, and dethe tabernacle was set up before their arrival. 22And dfthe standard of the camp of the people of Ephraim set out by their companies, and over their company was dgElishama the son of Ammihud. 23And over the company of the tribe of the people of Manasseh was dhGamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 24And over the company of the tribe of the people of Benjamin was diAbidan the son of Gideoni.

25Then djthe standard of the camp of the people of Dan, acting as the dkrear guard of all the camps, set out by their companies, and over their company was dlAhiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 26And over the company of the tribe of the people of Asher was dmPagiel the son of Ochran. 27And over the company of the tribe of the people of Naphtali was dnAhira the son of Enan. 28 doThis was the order of march of the people of Israel by their companies, when they set out.

29And Moses said to Hobab the son of dpReuel the Midianite, Mosesfather-in-law, “We are setting out for the place of which the Lord said, dq‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will do good to you, for drthe Lord has promised good to Israel.” 30But he said to him, “I will not go. I will depart to my own land and to my kindred.” 31And he said, “Please do not leave us, for you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you will serve dsas eyes for us. 32And if you do go with us, dtwhatever good the Lord will do to us, the same will we do to you.”

33So they set out from duthe mount of the Lord three daysjourney. And the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them three daysjourney, to seek out dva resting place for them. 34 dwAnd the cloud of the Lord was over them by day, whenever they set out from the camp.

35And whenever the ark set out, Moses said, dxArise, O Lord, and let your enemies be scattered, and let those who hate you flee before you.” 36And when it rested, he said, “Return, O Lord, to the ten thousand thousands of Israel.”
