Genesis 30:22-24

22Then God aremembered Rachel, and God listened to her and bopened her womb. 23She conceived and bore a son and said, “God has taken away cmy reproach.” 24And she called his name Joseph,
 Joseph means May he add, and sounds like the Hebrew for taken away
saying, e“May the Lord add to me another son!”

Genesis 41:51

51Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh. “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s house.”
 Manasseh sounds like the Hebrew for making to forget

Genesis 48:5

5And now your gtwo sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, hare mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are.

Genesis 48:14-20

14 iAnd Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, jcrossing his hands (for Manasseh was the firstborn). 15And he blessed Joseph and said,

“The God kbefore whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day,
16 lthe angel who has mredeemed me from all evil, bless the boys;
and in them let nmy name be carried on, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
and let them ogrow into a multitude
Or  let them be like fish for multitude
in the midst of the earth.”
17When Joseph saw that his father qlaid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him, and he took his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18And Joseph said to his father, “Not this way, my father; since this one is the firstborn, put your right hand on his head.” 19But his father refused and said, r“I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great. Nevertheless, shis younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude
Hebrew fullness
of nations.”
20So he blessed them that day, saying,

“By you Israel will pronounce blessings, saying,
uGod make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh.’”
Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh.

Joshua 13:29-31

29And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans. 30Their region extended from vMahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all wthe towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31and half Gilead, and xAshtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of yMachir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans.

Joshua 17:1-11

1Then allotment was made to the people of Manasseh, for he was zthe firstborn of Joseph. To aaMachir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, abwere allotted Gilead and Bashan, because he was a man of war. 2And allotments were made acto the rest of the people of Manasseh by their clans, Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida. These were the male descendants of Manasseh the son of Joseph, by their clans.

3Now adZelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters, and these are the names of his daughters: aeMahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 4They approached afEleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the leaders and said, ag“The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance along with our brothers.” So according to the mouth of the Lord he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father. 5Thus there fell to Manasseh ten portions, besides ahthe land of Gilead and Bashan, which is on the other side of the Jordan, 6because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance along with his sons. The land of Gilead was allotted to the rest of the people of Manasseh.

7The territory of Manasseh reached from Asher to aiMichmethath, which is east of Shechem. Then the boundary goes along southward to the inhabitants of En-tappuah. 8The land of ajTappuah belonged to Manasseh, but the town of Tappuah on the boundary of Manasseh belonged to the people of Ephraim. 9 akThen the boundary went down to the brook Kanah. These cities, to the south of the brook, among the cities of Manasseh, belong to Ephraim. Then the boundary of Manasseh goes on the north side of the brook and ends at the sea, 10the land to the south being Ephraim’s and that to the north being Manasseh’s, with the sea forming its boundary. On the north Asher is reached, and on the east Issachar. 11Also in Issachar and in Asher alManasseh had Beth-shean and its villages, and Ibleam and its villages, and the inhabitants of amDor and its villages, and the inhabitants of En-dor and its villages, and the inhabitants of anTaanach and its villages, and the inhabitants of aoMegiddo and its villages; apthe third is Naphath.
The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain
