Genesis 32:24-30

24 And Jacob was left alone. And ^aa man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, ^b“I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27 And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” 28 Then he said, ^c“Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, ^{▼▼ Israel means He strives with God, or God strives} for ^eyou have striven with God and ^fwith men, and have prevailed.” 29 Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, ^g“Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, ^{▼▼ Peniel means the face of God} saying, “For ⁱI have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.”

Joshua 5:13-15

The Commander of the Lord’s Army

13 When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, ^ja man was standing before him ^kwith his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” 14 And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” And Joshua ^lfell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” 15 And the commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, ^m“Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

The Fall of Jericho

1 Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. 2 And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, ⁿI have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.

Isaiah 9:6-7

Jeremiah 23:5-6
