Exodus 17:8-16

Israel Defeats Amalek

8 bThen Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. 9So Moses said to cJoshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with dthe staff of God in my hand.” 10So eJoshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and fHur went up to the top of the hill. 11Whenever Moses gheld up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12But Moseshands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and hHur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13And iJoshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.

14Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of jJoshua, that kI will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15And Moses lbuilt an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner, 16saying, “A hand upon the throne
A slight change would yield  upon the banner
of the Lord! nThe Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

Amalek was the first among the nations,
sbut its end is utter destruction.”

1 Samuel 15

The Lord Rejects Saul

1And Samuel said to Saul, t“The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore listen to the words of the Lord. 2Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘I have noted what Amalek did to Israel uin opposing them on the way when they came up out of Egypt. 3Now go and strike Amalek and vdevote to destruction
That is, set apart ( devote) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); also verses 8, 9, 15, 18, 20, 21
all that they have. Do not spare them, xbut kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”

4So Saul summoned the people and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand men on foot, and ten thousand men of Judah. 5And Saul came to the city of Amalek and lay in wait in the valley. 6Then Saul said to ythe Kenites, “Go, depart; go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. zFor you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7 aaAnd Saul defeated the Amalekites from abHavilah as far as acShur, which is east of Egypt. 8And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive adand devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 aeBut Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves
The meaning of the Hebrew term is uncertain
and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction.

10The word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11 ag“I regret

that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and aihas not performed my commandments.” And Samuel was angry, and he cried to the Lord all night.
12And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning. And it was told Samuel, “Saul came to ajCarmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself and turned and passed on and went down to Gilgal.” 13And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, akBlessed be you to the Lord. I have performed the commandment of the Lord.” 14And Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?” 15Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites, alfor the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice to the Lord your God, and the rest we have devoted to destruction.” 16Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stop! I will tell you what the Lord said to me this night.” And he said to him, “Speak.”

17And Samuel said, amThough you are little in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18And the Lord sent you on a mission and said, ‘Go, devote to destruction the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’ 19Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? anWhy did you pounce on the spoil and do what was evil in the sight of the Lord?” 20And Saul said to Samuel, ao“I have obeyed the voice of the Lord. I have gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me. I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have devoted the Amalekites to destruction. 21 apBut the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.” 22And Samuel said,

aq“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, arto obey is better than sacrifice,
and to listen than the fat of rams.
23For rebellion is as the sin of divination,
and presumption is as iniquity and asidolatry.
Because atyou have rejected the word of the Lord,
auhe has also rejected you from being king.”
24Saul said to Samuel, av“I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25Now therefore, please pardon my sin and awreturn with me that I may bow before the Lord.” 26And Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you. axFor you have rejected the word of the Lord, ayand the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.” 27 azAs Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore. 28And Samuel said to him, ba“The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29And also the Glory of Israel bbwill not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.” 30Then he said, “I have sinned; yet bchonor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, bdand return with me, that I may bow before the Lord your God.” 31So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul bowed before the Lord.

32Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him cheerfully.
Or haltingly (compare Septuagint); the Hebrew is uncertain
Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33And Samuel said, bfAs your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag to pieces before the Lord bgin Gilgal.

34Then Samuel went bhto Ramah, and Saul went up to his house in biGibeah of Saul. 35 bjAnd Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, bkbut Samuel grieved over Saul. blAnd the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel.

1 Samuel 27

David Flees to the Philistines

1Then David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.” 2So David arose and went over, he and bmthe six hundred men who were with him, bnto Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. 3And David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, and David with bohis two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel, and Abigail of Carmel, Nabal’s widow. 4And when it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, he no longer sought him.

5Then David said to Achish, “If bpI have found favor in your eyes, let a place be given me in one of the country towns, that I may dwell there. For why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?” 6So that day Achish gave him bqZiklag. Therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day. 7 brAnd the number of the days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was a year and four months.

8Now David bsand his men went up and made raids against btthe Geshurites, buthe Girzites, and bvthe Amalekites, for these were the inhabitants of the land from of old, bwas far as Shur, to the land of Egypt. 9And David would strike the land and would leave neither man nor woman alive, but would take away the sheep, the oxen, the donkeys, the camels, and the garments, and come back to Achish. 10When Achish asked, “Where have you bxmade a raid today?” David would say, “Against the Negeb of Judah,” or, “Against the Negeb of bythe Jerahmeelites,” or, “Against the Negeb of bzthe Kenites.” 11And David would leave neither man nor woman alive to bring news to Gath, thinking, “lest they should tell about us and say, ‘So David has done.’” Such was his custom all the while he lived in the country of the Philistines. 12And Achish trusted David, thinking, “He has made himself an utter stench to his people Israel; therefore he shall always be my servant.”
