Hebrews 8

Jesus, High Priest of a Better Covenant

1Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, aone who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2a minister in the holy places, in bthe true tent
Or tabernacle; also verse 5
that the Lord dset up, not man.
3For eevery high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus fit is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. 4Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. 5They serve ga copy and hshadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, iSee that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” 6But as it is, Christ
Greek he
has obtained a ministry that is kas much more excellent than the old as lthe covenant mhe mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.
7 nFor if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.

8For he finds fault with them when he says:
Some manuscripts  For finding fault with it he says to them

pBehold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,
when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah,
9not like the covenant that I made with their fathers
on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt.
For they did not continue in my covenant,
and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.
10 qFor this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws into their minds,
and rwrite them on their hearts,
and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
11And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor
and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
for they shall sall know me,
from the least of them to the greatest.
12For I will be merciful toward their iniquities,
tand I will remember their sins no more.”
13In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And uwhat is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

Hebrews 10

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

1For since the law has but va shadow wof the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, xit can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. 2Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? 3But yin these sacrifices zthere is a reminder of sins every year. 4For aait is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5Consequently, abwhen Christ
Greek he
came into the world, he said,

adSacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
but a body have you prepared for me;
6in burnt offerings and sin offerings
you have taken no pleasure.
7Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,
as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”
8When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in aesacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), 9then he added, afBehold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10And by that will agwe have been sanctified through the offering of ahthe body of Jesus Christ aionce for all.

11And every priest stands ajdaily at his service, akoffering repeatedly the same sacrifices, alwhich can never take away sins. 12But when Christ
Greek this one
had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he ansat down at the right hand of God,
13waiting from that time aountil his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14For by a single offering aphe has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

15And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

16 aqThis is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”
17then he adds,

ar“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

The Full Assurance of Faith

19 asTherefore, brothers,
Or  brothers and sisters
since we have confidence to enter authe holy places by the blood of Jesus,
20by avthe new and living way that he opened for us through awthe curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21and since we have axa great priest over the house of God, 22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts aysprinkled clean azfrom an evil conscience and our bodies bawashed with pure water. 23 bbLet us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for bche who promised is faithful. 24And bdlet us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 benot neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and bfall the more as you see bgthe Day drawing near.

26For bhif we go on sinning deliberately biafter receiving the knowledge of the truth, bjthere no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 bkbut a fearful expectation of judgment, and bla fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 bmAnyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy bnon the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one bowho has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned bpthe blood of the covenant bqby which he was sanctified, and has broutraged the Spirit of grace? 30For we know him who said, bsVengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, bt“The Lord will judge his people.” 31 buIt is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32But recall the former days when, after bvyou were enlightened, you endured bwa hard struggle with sufferings, 33sometimes being bxpublicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34For byyou had compassion on those in prison, and bzyou joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had caa better possession and an abiding one. 35Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has cba great reward. 36For ccyou have need of endurance, so that cdwhen you have done the will of God you may cereceive what is promised. 37For,

cfYet a little while,
and cgthe coming one will come and will not delay;
38 chbut my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”
39But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
