Hosea 1

1The word of the Lord that came to Hosea, the son of Beeri, ain the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of bJeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

Hosea’s Wife and Children

2When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, cGo, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have dchildren of whoredom, for ethe land commits great whoredom by forsaking the Lord.” 3So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

4And the Lord said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while fI will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and gI will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5And on that day hI will break the bow of Israel iin the Valley of Jezreel.”

6She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the Lord said to him, jCall her name No Mercy,
Hebrew Lo-ruhama, which means she has not received mercy
for lI will no more have mercy on the house of Israel, to forgive them at all.
7But mI will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God. I nwill not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.”

8When she had weaned No Mercy, she conceived and bore a son. 9And the Lord said, oCall his name Not My People,
Hebrew Lo-ammi, which means  not my people
for qyou are not my people, and I am not your God.”
Hebrew  I am not yours

of aathe living God.”
11And abthe children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and acthey shall appoint for themselves one head. And they shall go up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

Hosea 10

1 adIsrael is a luxuriant vine
that yields its fruit.
The more his fruit increased,
aethe more altars he built;
as his country improved,
he improved his pillars.
2Their heart is false;
now they must bear their guilt.
The Lord
Hebrew He
will break down their altars
and destroy their pillars.
3 For now they will say:
ag“We have no king,
for we do not fear the Lord;
and a kingwhat could he do for us?”
4They utter ahmere words;
with empty oaths they make covenants;
so aijudgment springs up like poisonous weeds
ajin the furrows of the field.
5The inhabitants of Samaria tremble
for akthe calf
Or calves
of amBeth-aven.
Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests
those who rejoiced over it and anover its glory
for it has departed
Or  has gone into exile
from them.
6 apThe thing itself shall be carried to Assyria
as tribute to aqthe great king.
Or  to King Jareb

Ephraim shall be put to shame,
and Israel shall be ashamed asof his idol.
Or counsel

7 auSamaria’s king shall perish
like a twig on the face of the waters.
8The high places of avAven, awthe sin of Israel,
shall be destroyed.
axThorn and thistle shall grow up
on their altars,
and aythey shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”
and to the hills, “Fall on us.”
9 From azthe days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;
there they have continued.
Shall not the war against the unjust
Hebrew  the children of injustice
overtake them in Gibeah?
10 bbWhen I please, bcI will discipline them,
and nations shall be gathered against them
when they are bound up for bdtheir double iniquity.
11 Ephraim was a trained calf
that beloved to thresh,
and I spared her fair neck;
but I will put bfEphraim to the yoke;
bgJudah must plow;
Jacob must harrow for himself.
12 bhSow for yourselves righteousness;
reap steadfast love;
bibreak up your fallow ground,
for it is the time to seek the Lord,
that he may come and bjrain righteousness upon you.
13 bkYou have plowed iniquity;
you have reaped injustice;
you have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you have trusted in your own way
and in the multitude of your warriors,
14therefore blthe tumult of war shall arise among your people,
and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,
as bmShalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;
bnmothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
15Thus it shall be done to you, O boBethel,
because of your great evil.
At dawn bpthe king of Israel
shall be utterly cut off.
