Isaiah 14:13-17

13You said in your heart,
a‘I will ascend to heaven;
above the stars of God
bI will set my throne on high;
I will sit on the mount of assembly
in the far reaches of the north;
Or  in the remote parts of Zaphon

14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High.’
15 dBut you are brought down to Sheol,
to the far reaches of the pit.
16Those who see you will stare at you
and ponder over you:
‘Is this ethe man who made the earth tremble,
who shook kingdoms,
17who made the world like a desert
and overthrew its cities,
fwho did not let his prisoners go home?’

Jeremiah 25:9-26

9 gbehold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the Lord, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, hmy servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, iand make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation. 10Moreover, jI will banish from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, kthe grinding of the millstones and lthe light of the lamp. 11 mThis whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and nthese nations shall serve the king of Babylon oseventy years. 12Then after pseventy years are completed, qI will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, rthe land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the Lord, smaking the land an everlasting waste. 13I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written tin this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. 14 uFor many nations vand great kings shall make slaves even of them, wand I will recompense them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”

The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath

15Thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: xTake from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of ythe sword that I am sending among them.”

17So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand, zand made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it: 18 aaJerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and officials, abto make them a desolation and a waste, a hissing and a curse, as at this day; 19 acPharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, all his people, 20and adall the mixed tribes among them; all the kings of aethe land of Uz and all the kings of afthe land of the Philistines ( agAshkelon, ahGaza, Ekron, and the remnant of aiAshdod); 21 ajEdom, akMoab, and the sons of alAmmon; 22all the kings of amTyre, all the kings of anSidon, and the kings of the coastland across aothe sea; 23 apDedan, aqTema, arBuz, and all who cut asthe corners of their hair; 24all the atkings of Arabia and all the kings of authe mixed tribes who dwell in the desert; 25all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of avElam, and all the kings of awMedia; 26all the kings of axthe north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of ayBabylon

Daniel 4:30

30and the king answered and said, ba“Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by bbmy mighty power as a royal residence and for bcthe glory of my majesty?”

Daniel 5:18-23

18O king, the bdMost High God begave bfNebuchadnezzar your father bgkingship and greatness and glory and majesty. 19And because of the greatness that he gave him, bhall peoples, nations, and languages bitrembled and feared before him. Whom he would, he killed, and whom he would, he kept alive; whom he would, he raised up, and whom he would, he humbled. 20But bjwhen his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, bkhe was brought down from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him. 21 blHe was driven from among the children of mankind, and his mind was made like that of a beast, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, bmuntil he knew that the bnMost High God rules the kingdom of mankind and sets over it whom he will. 22And you his son,
Or successor
bpBelshazzar, bqhave not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,
23but you have lifted up yourself against brthe Lord of heaven. And bsthe vessels of his house have been brought in before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines have drunk wine from them. btAnd you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or know, bubut the God in whose hand is your breath, and bvwhose are all your ways, bwyou have not honored.

Habakkuk 2:5-10

5 Moreover, wine

is bya traitor,
an arrogant man who is never at rest.
The meaning of the Hebrew of these two lines is uncertain

His greed is as wide as Sheol;
like death cahe has never enough.
cbHe gathers for himself all nations
and collects as his own all peoples.”

Woe to the Chaldeans

6Shall not all these cctake up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say,

cdWoe to him cewho heaps up what is not his own—
for cfhow long?—
and cgloads himself with pledges!”
7 chWill not your debtors suddenly arise,
and those awake who will make you tremble?
Then you will be spoil for them.
8 ciBecause you have plundered many nations,
all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you,
cjfor the blood of man and ckviolence to the earth,
to cities and all who dwell in them.
9 clWoe to him who gets evil gain for his house,
cmto cnset his nest on high,
to be safe from the reach of harm!
10You have devised shame for your house
coby cutting off many peoples;
you have forfeited your life.
