Isaiah 15

An Oracle Concerning Moab

1An aoracle concerning bMoab.

Because cAr of Moab is laid waste in a night,
Moab is undone;
because dKir of Moab is laid waste in a night,
Moab is undone.
2He has gone up to the temple,
Hebrew  the house
and to fDibon,
to the high places
Or temple, even Dibon to the high places
to weep;
over hNebo and over iMedeba
Moab jwails.
On every head is kbaldness;
every beard is shorn;
3in the streets they wear sackcloth;
on the housetops and in the squares
everyone wails and melts in tears.
4 lHeshbon and mElealeh cry out;
their voice is heard as far as nJahaz;
therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud;
his soul trembles.
5My heart cries out for Moab;
her fugitives flee to Zoar,
to oEglath-shelishiyah.
For at the pascent of Luhith
they go up weeping;
on the road to qHoronaim
they raise a cry of destruction;
6the waters of rNimrim
are a desolation;
the grass is withered, the vegetation fails,
the greenery is no more.
7 sTherefore the abundance they have gained
and what they have laid up
they carry away
over the Brook of the Willows.
8For a cry has gone
around the land of Moab;
her wailing reaches to Eglaim;
her wailing reaches to Beer-elim.
9For the waters of tDibon
Dead Sea Scroll, Vulgate (compare Syriac); Masoretic Text Dimon; twice in this verse
are full of blood;
for I will bring upon Dibon even more,
va lion for those of Moab who escape,
for the remnant of the land.

Isaiah 16

1 wSend the lamb to the ruler of the land,
from xSela, by way of the desert,
to the mount of the daughter of Zion.
2Like fleeing birds,
like a scattered nest,
so are the daughters of Moab
at ythe fords of the Arnon.
3 Give counsel;
grant justice;
zmake your shade like night
at the height of noon;
shelter the outcasts;
do not reveal the fugitive;
4let aathe outcasts of Moab
sojourn among you;
be a shelter to them
Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint, Syriac; Masoretic Text  let my outcasts sojourn among you; as for Moab, be a shelter to them

from the destroyer.
When the oppressor is no more,
and destruction has ceased,
and he who tramples underfoot has vanished from the land,
5 acthen a throne will be established in steadfast love,
and on it will sit in faithfulness
in the tent of David
one who judges and seeks justice
and is swift to do righteousness.”
6 adWe have heard of the pride of Moab
how proud he is!—
aeof his arrogance, his pride, and his insolence;
in his idle boasting he is not right.
7Therefore let Moab wail for Moab,
aflet everyone wail.
Mourn, utterly stricken,
for the agraisin cakes of ahKir-hareseth.
8 For the fields of Heshbon languish,
and aithe vine of Sibmah;
the lords of the nations
have struck down its branches,
which reached to Jazer
and strayed to the desert;
its shoots spread abroad
and passed over the sea.
9Therefore ajI weep with akthe weeping of Jazer
for the vine of Sibmah;
I drench you with my tears,
O Heshbon and Elealeh;
for over alyour summer fruit and your harvest
the shout has ceased.
10 amAnd joy and gladness are taken away from anthe fruitful field,
and in the vineyards no aosongs are sung,
no cheers are raised;
no aptreader treads out wine aqin the presses;
I have put an end to the shouting.
11Therefore army inner parts moan like a lyre for Moab,
and my inmost self for Kir-hareseth.
12And when Moab presents himself, when ashe wearies himself on atthe high place, when he comes to his sanctuary to pray, he will not prevail.

13This is the word that the Lord spoke concerning Moab auin the past. 14But now the Lord has spoken, saying, “In three years, avlike the years of a hired worker, the glory of Moab will be brought into contempt, in spite of all his great multitude, and those who remain will be awvery few and feeble.”

Isaiah 25:10

10For the hand of the Lord will rest axon this mountain,
and ayMoab shall be trampled down in his place,
as straw is trampled down in a dunghill.
The Hebrew words for  dunghill and for the Moabite town  Madmen (Jeremiah 48:2) sound alike

Jeremiah 9:26

26 baEgypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and bball who dwell in the desert who cut the corners of their hair, for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are bcuncircumcised in heart.”

Jeremiah 48

Judgment on Moab

1 bdConcerning Moab.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

Woe to beNebo, for it is laid waste!
bfKiriathaim is put to shame, it is taken;
the fortress is put to shame bgand broken down;
2the renown of Moab is no more.
In bhHeshbon they planned disaster against her:
Come, let us cut her off bifrom being a nation!’
You also, O bjMadmen, shall be brought to silence;
the sword shall pursue you.
3 “A voice! A cry from bkHoronaim,
Desolation and great destruction!’
4Moab is destroyed;
her little ones have made a cry.
5 blFor at the ascent of Luhith
they go up weeping;
Hebrew weeping goes up with weeping

for bnat the descent of Horonaim
they have heard the distressed cry
Septuagint (compare Isaiah 15:5)  heard the cry
of destruction.
6Flee! Save yourselves!
You will be like bpa juniper in the desert!
7For, bqbecause you trusted in your works and your treasures,
you also shall be taken;
and brChemosh bsshall go into exile
with bthis priests and his officials.
8 buThe destroyer shall come upon every city,
and no city shall escape;
the valley shall perish,
and bvthe plain shall be destroyed,
as the Lord has spoken.
9 Give wings to Moab,
for she would fly away;
her cities shall become a desolation,
with no inhabitant in them.
10 bwCursed is he who does bxthe work of the Lord with slackness, and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from bloodshed.

11 Moab has been at ease from his youth
and has bysettled on his dregs;
he has not been emptied from vessel to vessel,
nor has he gone into exile;
so his taste remains in him,
and his scent is not changed.
12Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I shall send to him pourers who will pour him, and empty his vessels and break his
Septuagint, Aquila; Hebrew their
jars in pieces.
13Then caMoab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as cbthe house of Israel was ashamed of ccBethel, their confidence.

14 How do you say, ‘We are heroes
and mighty men of war’?
15The destroyer of cdMoab and his cities has come up,
and the choicest of his young men have cegone down to slaughter,
declares cfthe King, cgwhose name is the Lord of hosts.
16The calamity of Moab is near at hand,
and his affliction hastens swiftly.
17 chGrieve for him, all you who are around him,
and all who know his name;
say, ciHow the mighty scepter is broken,
the glorious staff.’
18 cj“Come down from your glory,
and sit on the parched ground,
O inhabitant of ckDibon!
For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you;
he has destroyed your strongholds.
19 clStand by the way cmand watch,
O inhabitant of cnAroer!
Ask him who flees and her who escapes;
say, ‘What has happened?’
20Moab is put to shame, for it is broken;
cowail and cry!
Tell it beside cpthe Arnon,
that cqMoab is laid waste.
21Judgment has come upon crthe tableland, upon Holon, and csJahzah, and Mephaath, 22and ctDibon, and cuNebo, and Beth-diblathaim, 23and cvKiriathaim, and Beth-gamul, and cwBeth-meon, 24and cxKerioth, and cyBozrah, and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25 czThe horn of Moab is cut off, and dahis arm is broken, declares the Lord.

26 db“Make him drunk, dcbecause he magnified himself against the Lord, so that Moab shall ddwallow in his vomit, deand he too shall be held in derision. 27 dfWas not Israel a derision to you? dgWas he found among thieves, that whenever you spoke of him dhyou wagged your head?

28 diLeave the cities, and dwell in the rock,
O inhabitants of Moab!
Be djlike the dove that nests
in the sides of the mouth of a gorge.
29 dkWe have heard of the pride of Moab
he is very proud
of his loftiness, his pride, and his arrogance,
and the haughtiness of his heart.
30I know his insolence, declares the Lord;
dlhis boasts are false,
his deeds are false.
31 dmTherefore I wail for Moab;
I cry out for all Moab;
for the men of dnKir-hareseth I mourn.
32More than for doJazer I weep for you,
dpO vine of dqSibmah!
drYour branches passed over the sea,
reached to the Sea of dsJazer;
on your summer fruits and your grapes
the destroyer has fallen.
33 dtGladness and joy have been taken away
from the fruitful land of Moab;
I have made the wine cease from the winepresses;
no one treads them with shouts of joy;
the shouting is not the shout of joy.
34 duFrom the outcry at Heshbon even to Elealeh, as far as Jahaz they utter their voice, from Zoar to dvHoronaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. For the waters of Nimrim also have become desolate. 35And I will bring to an end in Moab, declares the Lord, him who offers sacrifice in dwthe high place and makes offerings to his god. 36Therefore my heart moans for Moab like a flute, and my heart moans like a flute for the men of dxKir-hareseth. dyTherefore the riches they gained have perished.

37 dzFor every head is shaved and every beard cut off. eaOn all the hands are gashes, and ebaround the waist is sackcloth. 38On all the housetops of Moab and in the squares there is nothing but lamentation, for I have broken Moab like eca vessel for which no one cares, declares the Lord. 39How it is broken! How they wail! edHow Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab eehas become a derision and a horror to all that are around him.”

40 For thus says the Lord:
Behold, efone shall fly swiftly like an eagle
egand spread his wings against Moab;
41 ehthe cities shall be taken
and the strongholds seized.
eiThe heart of the warriors of Moab shall be in that day
like the heart of eja woman in her birth pains;
42Moab shall be ekdestroyed and be no longer a people,
because elhe magnified himself against the Lord.
43 emTerror, pit, and snare
are before you, O inhabitant of Moab!

declares the Lord.
44He who flees from the terror
shall fall into the pit,
and he who climbs out of the pit
shall be caught in the snare.
enFor I will bring these things upon Moab,
the year of their punishment,

declares the Lord.
45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
fugitives stop without strength,
for fire came out from Heshbon,
flame from the house of Sihon;
it has destroyed eothe forehead of Moab,
the crown of epthe sons of tumult.
46 eqWoe to you, O Moab!
The people of erChemosh are undone,
for your sons have been taken captive,
and your daughters into captivity.
47 esYet I will restore the fortunes of Moab
in the latter days, declares the Lord.”
Thus far is the judgment on Moab.

Ezekiel 25:8-11

Prophecy Against Moab and Seir

8Thus says the Lord God: Because etMoab and euSeir
Septuagint lacks  and Seir
said, ‘Behold, the ewhouse of Judah is like all the other nations,’
9therefore exI will lay open the flank of Moab from the cities, from its cities on its frontier, the glory of the country, eyBeth-jeshimoth, ezBaal-meon, and faKiriathaim. 10I will give it fbalong with the Ammonites fcto the people of the East as a possession, fdthat the Ammonites may be remembered no more among the nations, 11 feand I will execute judgments upon Moab. ffThen they will know that I am the Lord.

Amos 2:1-3

1Thus says the Lord:

fg“For three transgressions of fhMoab,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
Hebrew  I will not turn it back; also verses 4, 6

because fjhe burned to lime
the bones of the king of Edom.
2So I will send a fire upon Moab,
and it shall devour the strongholds of fkKerioth,
and Moab shall die amid uproar,
amid shouting and the sound of the trumpet;
3 flI will cut off the ruler from its midst,
and will kill fmall its princes
Or officials
with him,”

says the Lord.
