Isaiah 18

An Oracle Concerning Cush

1 Ah, land of awhirring wings
that is beyond the rivers of bCush,
Probably Nubia

2which dsends ambassadors by the sea,
in vessels of papyrus on the waters!
Go, you swift messengers,
to a nation etall and smooth,
to a people feared near and far,
a nation fmighty and conquering,
whose land the rivers divide.
3 All you inhabitants of the world,
you who dwell on the earth,
when ga signal is raised on the mountains, look!
When a trumpet is blown, hear!
4For thus the Lord said to me:
“I will quietly look hfrom my dwelling
like clear heat in sunshine,
like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.”
5 iFor before the harvest, when the blossom is over,
and the flower becomes a ripening grape,
he cuts off the shoots with pruning hooks,
and the spreading branches he lops off and clears away.
6 jThey shall all of them be left
to the birds of prey of the mountains
and to the beasts of the earth.
And the birds of prey will summer on them,
and all the beasts of the earth will winter on them.
7 kAt that time tribute will be brought to the Lord of hosts

from a people ltall and smooth,
from a people feared near and far,
a nation mighty and conquering,
whose land the rivers divide,
to mMount Zion, the place of the nname of the Lord of hosts.

Isaiah 19:1-17

An Oracle Concerning Egypt

1An ooracle concerning pEgypt.

Behold, the Lord qis riding on a swift cloud
and comes to Egypt;
and rthe idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence,
and the heart of the Egyptians will smelt within them.
2And I will stir up Egyptians against Egyptians,
tand they will fight, each against another
and each against his neighbor,
city against city, kingdom against kingdom;
3and the spirit of the Egyptians within them will be emptied out,
and I will confound
Or  I will swallow up
their vcounsel;
and they will inquire of the idols and the sorcerers,
and wthe mediums and the necromancers;
4and I will give over the Egyptians
into the hand of xa hard master,
and a fierce king will rule over them,
declares the Lord God of hosts.
5 And the waters of the sea will be dried up,
and the river will be dry and parched,
6and its canals will become foul,
and the branches of Egypt’s Nile will diminish and dry up,
reeds and rushes will rot away.
7There will be bare places by the Nile,
on the brink of the Nile,
and all that is sown by the Nile will be parched,
will be driven away, and will be no more.
8The yfishermen will mourn and lament,
all who cast a hook in the Nile;
and they will languish
who spread nets on the water.
9The workers in zcombed flax will be in despair,
and the weavers of white cotton.
10Those who are the aapillars of the land will be crushed,
and all who abwork for pay will be grieved.
11 The princes of acZoan are utterly foolish;
the wisest counselors of Pharaoh give stupid counsel.
How can you say to Pharaoh,
“I am a son of the wise,
a son of ancient kings”?
12Where then are your adwise men?
Let them tell you
that they might know what the Lord of hosts has purposed against Egypt.
13The princes of aeZoan have become fools,
and the princes of afMemphis are deluded;
those who are the agcornerstones of her tribes
have made Egypt stagger.
14The Lord has mingled within her aha spirit of confusion,
and they will make Egypt stagger in all its deeds,
aias a drunken man staggers in his vomit.
15And there will be nothing for Egypt
that ajhead or tail, palm branch or reed, may do.

Egypt, Assyria, Israel Blessed

16In that day the Egyptians will be aklike women, and altremble with fear before the hand that the Lord of hosts shakes over them. 17And the land of Judah will become a terror to the Egyptians. Everyone to whom it is mentioned will fear because of the purpose that the Lord of hosts has purposed against them.

Isaiah 20

A Sign Against Egypt and Cush

1In the year that amthe commander in chief, who was sent by Sargon the king of Assyria, came to anAshdod and fought against it and captured it— 2at that time the Lord spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, “Go, and loose the sackcloth from your waist and take off your sandals from your feet,” and he did so, walking aonaked and barefoot.

3Then the Lord said, “As my servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot for three years apas a sign and a portent against Egypt and Cush,
Probably Nubia
4so shall the arking of Assyria lead away the Egyptian captives and the Cushite exiles, both the young and the old, naked and barefoot, with buttocks uncovered, the nakedness of Egypt. 5 asThen they shall be dismayed and ashamed because of Cush their hope and of Egypt their boast. 6And the inhabitants of atthis coastland will say in that day, ‘Behold, this is what has happened to those in whom we hoped and auto whom we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria! And we, how shall we escape?’”

Jeremiah 9:25-26

25Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when avI will punish all those who are circumcised merely in the flesh 26 awEgypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and axall who dwell in the desert who cut the corners of their hair, for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are ayuncircumcised in heart.”

Jeremiah 25:18-19

18 azJerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and officials, bato make them a desolation and a waste, a hissing and a curse, as at this day; 19 bbPharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, all his people,

Ezekiel 30

A Lament for Egypt

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 bcSon of man, prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord God:

bdWail, ‘Alas for the day!’
3 beFor the day is near,
bfthe day of the Lord is near;
it will be bga day of clouds,
a time of doom for
Hebrew lacks  doom for
the nations.
4 biA sword shall come upon Egypt,
bjand anguish shall be in bkCush,
when the slain fall in Egypt,
and blher wealth
Or multitude; also verse 10
is carried away,
and bnher foundations are torn down.
5 boCush, and bpPut, and Lud, and bqall Arabia, and Libya,
With Septuagint; Hebrew Cub
and the people of the land that is in league,
Hebrew  and the sons of the land of the covenant
shall fall with them by the sword.

6 Thus says the Lord:
btThose who support Egypt shall fall,
and buher proud might shall come down;
bvfrom Migdol to Syene
they shall fall within her by the sword,
declares the Lord God.
7 bwAnd they shall be desolated in the midst of desolated countries,
and their cities shall be in the midst of cities that are laid waste.
8 bxThen they will know that I am the Lord,
when byI have set fire to Egypt,
and bzall her helpers are broken.
9“On that day camessengers shall go out from me in ships to terrify the unsuspecting cbpeople of Cush, and ccanguish shall come upon them on the day of Egypt’s doom;
Hebrew  the day of Egypt
for, behold, it comes!

10Thus says the Lord God:

ce“I will put an end to the wealth of Egypt,
by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
11He and his people with him, cfthe most ruthless of nations,
shall be brought in to destroy the land,
cgand they shall draw their swords against Egypt
and fill the land with the slain.
12And chI will cidry up the Nile
and will sell the land into the hand of cjevildoers;
ckI will bring desolation upon the land and everything in it,
by the hand of clforeigners;
cmI am the Lord; I have spoken.
13Thus says the Lord God:

cn“I will destroy the idols
and put an end to the images in coMemphis;
cpthere shall no longer be a prince from the land of Egypt;
so cqI will put fear in the land of Egypt.
14I will make crPathros a desolation
and will set fire to csZoan
ctand will execute judgments on cuThebes.
15And I will pour out my wrath on Pelusium,
the stronghold of Egypt,
and cut off the multitude
Or wealth
of Thebes.
16And I will set fire to Egypt;
Pelusium shall be in great agony;
Thebes shall be breached,
and cwMemphis shall face enemies
Or distress
by day.
17The young men of On and of Pi-beseth shall fall by the sword,
and the women
Or  the cities; Hebrew they
shall go into captivity.
18At czTehaphnehes dathe day shall be dark,
when I break there the yoke bars of Egypt,
and dbher proud might shall come to an end in her;
she shall be covered by a cloud,
and her daughters shall go into captivity.
19Thus dcI will execute judgments on Egypt.
ddThen they will know that I am the Lord.”

Egypt Shall Fall to Babylon

20 deIn the eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 21 dfSon of man, dgI have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and behold, dhit has not been bound up, to heal it by binding it with a bandage, so that it may become strong to wield the sword. 22Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt and diwill break his arms, both the strong arm and the one that was broken, and I will make the sword fall from his hand. 23 djI will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them through the countries. 24And dkI will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put dlmy sword in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan before him dmlike a man mortally wounded. 25I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh shall fall. dnThen they shall know that I am the Lord, dowhen I put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he stretches it out against the land of Egypt. 26And I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them throughout the countries. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Ezekiel 31

Pharaoh to Be Slain

1 dpIn the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 dqSon of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to drhis multitude:

dsWhom are you like in your greatness?
3Behold, dtAssyria was a ducedar in dvLebanon,
with beautiful branches and dwforest shade,
dxand of towering height,
its top among the clouds.
Or  its top went through the thick boughs; also verses 10, 14

4The waters nourished it;
the deep made it grow tall,
making dzits rivers flow
around the place of its planting,
sending forth its streams
to all the trees of the field.
5So eait towered high
above all the trees of the field;
its boughs grew large
and its branches long
from ebabundant water in its shoots.
6 ecAll the birds of the heavens
made their nests in its boughs;
under its branches all the beasts of the field
gave birth to their young,
and under its shadow
lived all great nations.
7It was edbeautiful in its greatness,
in the length of its branches;
eefor its roots went down
to abundant waters.
8 efThe cedars egin the garden of God could not rival it,
nor the fir trees equal its boughs;
neither were the plane trees
like its branches;
no tree ehin the garden of God
was its equal in beauty.
9I made it beautiful
in the mass of its branches,
and all the trees of eiEden envied it,
that were in the garden of God.
10Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because ejit
Syriac, Vulgate; Hebrew you
towered high and set its top among the clouds, and elits heart was proud of its height,
11I will give it into the hand of a mighty one of the nations. He shall surely deal with it as its wickedness deserves. I have cast it out. 12 emForeigners, enthe most ruthless of nations, have cut it down and left it. eoOn the mountains and in all the valleys its branches have fallen, and its boughs have been broken in all epthe ravines of the land, and eqall the peoples of the earth have gone away from its shadow and left it. 13 erOn its fallen trunk dwell all the birds of the heavens, and on its branches are all the beasts of the field. 14 esAll this is in order that no trees by the waters may grow to towering height or set their tops among the clouds, and that no trees that drink water may reach up to them in height. For they are all given over to death, etto the world eubelow, among the children of man,
Or  of Adam
with those who go down to the pit.

15Thus says the Lord God: On the day ewthe cedar
Hebrew it
went down to Sheol I caused mourning; I closed the deep over it, and restrained its rivers, and many waters were stopped. I clothed Lebanon in gloom for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it.
16 eyI made the nations quake at the sound of its fall, ezwhen I cast it down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit. faAnd all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, fbwere comforted in the world below. 17They also went down to Sheol with it, fcto those who are slain by the sword; yes, fdthose who were its arm, fewho lived under its shadow among the nations.

18 ffWhom are you thus like in glory and in greatness fgamong the trees of Eden? fhYou shall be brought down with fithe trees of Eden to the world below. fjYou shall lie among the uncircumcised, fkwith those who are slain by the sword.

fl“This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”

Ezekiel 32

A Lament over Pharaoh and Egypt

1 fmIn the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 fnSon of man, foraise a lamentation over fpPharaoh king of Egypt and say to him:

“You consider yourself fqa lion of the nations,
but you are like fra dragon fsin the seas;
ftyou burst forth in your rivers,
trouble the waters with your feet,
and foul their rivers.
3Thus says the Lord God:
fuI will throw my net over you
with a host of fvmany peoples,
and fwthey will haul you up in my dragnet.
4And fxI will cast you on the ground;
on the open field I will fling you,
and will cause all the birds of the heavens to settle on you,
and I will gorge the beasts of the whole earth with you.
5I will strew your flesh fyupon the mountains
and fill the valleys with your carcass.
Hebrew  your height

6I will drench the land even to the mountains
with your flowing blood,
and the ravines will be full of you.
7 gaWhen I blot you out, gbI will cover the heavens
and make their stars dark;
I will cover the sun with a cloud,
and the moon shall not give its light.
8All the bright lights of heaven
will I make dark over you,
and gcput darkness on your land,

declares the Lord God.
9“I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries that you have not known. 10 gdI will make many peoples appalled at you, and the hair of their kings shall bristle with horror because of you, when geI brandish my sword before them. gfThey shall tremble every moment, every one for his own life, on the day of your downfall.

11For thus says the Lord God: ggThe sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you. 12I will cause ghyour multitude to fall by the swords of mighty ones, all of them gimost ruthless of nations.

gj“They shall bring to ruin the pride of Egypt,
and all its multitude
Or wealth
shall perish.
13I will destroy all its beasts
from beside many waters;
gland no foot of man shall trouble them anymore,
nor shall the hoofs of beasts trouble them.
14Then gmI will make their waters clear,
and cause their rivers to run like oil,

declares the Lord God.
15When I make the land of Egypt desolate,
and when the land gnis desolate of all that fills it,
when I strike down all who dwell in it,
then gothey will know that I am the Lord.
16 gpThis is a lamentation that shall be chanted; the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt, and over gqall her multitude, shall they chant it, declares the Lord God.”

17 grIn the twelfth year, in the twelfth month,
Hebrew lacks  in the twelfth month
on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:
18 gtSon of man, guwail over gvthe multitude of Egypt, and gwsend them down, her and the daughters of majestic nations, gxto the world below, to those who have gone down to the pit:

19 gyWhom do you surpass in beauty?
Go down and gzbe laid to rest with the uncircumcised.’
20They shall fall amid those hawho are slain by the sword. Egypt
Hebrew She
is delivered to the sword; drag her away, and hcall her multitudes.
21The mighty chiefs hdshall speak of them, hewith their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: ‘They have come down, they lie still, hfthe uncircumcised, hgslain by the sword.’

22 hhAssyria is there, and all her company, hiits graves all around it, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, 23whose graves are set in hjthe uttermost parts of the pit; and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, hkwho spread terror hlin the land of the living.

24 hmElam is hnthere, and all her multitude around her grave; all of them hoslain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised into hpthe world below, who spread their terror in the land of the living; and hqthey bear their shame hrwith those who go down to the pit. 25 hsThey have made her a bed among the slain with all her multitude, hther graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for terror of them was spread in the land of the living, and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are placed among the slain.

26 huMeshech-Tubal is hvthere, and all her multitude, hwher graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for they spread their terror in the land of the living. 27And hxthey do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; for the terror of the mighty men was in the land of the living. 28But as for you, you shall be broken hyand lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword.

29 hzEdom is iathere, her kings and all her princes, who for all their might are laid with those who are killed by the sword; they lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.

30“The princes ibof the north are there, all of them, and all the icSidonians, who have gone down in shame with the slain, idfor all the terror that they caused by their might; they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and iebear their shame with those who go down to the pit.

31“When Pharaoh sees them, he ifwill be comforted for igall his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord God. 32 ihFor I spread terror iiin the land of the living; and he shall be laid to rest among ijthe uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”
