Isaiah 21:11-12

11The aoracle concerning bDumah.

One is calling to me from cSeir,
Watchman, what time of the night?
Watchman, what time of the night?”
12The watchman says:
Morning comes, and also dthe night.
If you will inquire, einquire;
come back again.”

Isaiah 34

Judgment on the Nations

1 Draw near, fO nations, to hear,
and give attention, O peoples!
Let the earth hear, and all that fills it;
the world, and all that comes from it.
2For the Lord is enraged against all the nations,
and furious against all their host;
he has gdevoted them to destruction,
That is, set apart ( devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); also verse 5
has given them over for slaughter.
3Their slain shall be cast out,
and ithe stench of their corpses shall rise;
jthe mountains shall flow with their blood.
4 kAll the host of heaven shall rot away,
and the skies roll up like a scroll.
All their host shall fall,
as leaves fall from the vine,
like leaves falling from the fig tree.
5 For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens;
behold, it descends for judgment upon lEdom,
upon the people mI have devoted to destruction.
6The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood;
it is gorged with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
nFor the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 oWild oxen shall pfall with them,
and qyoung steers with rthe mighty bulls.
Their land shall drink its fill of blood,
and their soil shall be gorged with fat.
8 sFor the Lord has a day of vengeance,
a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
9 tAnd the streams of Edom
Hebrew her streams
shall be turned into pitch,
and her soil into sulfur;
her land shall become burning pitch.
10Night and day vit shall not be quenched;
wits smoke shall go up forever.
xFrom generation to generation it shall lie waste;
none shall pass through it forever and ever.
11 yBut the hawk and the porcupine
The identity of the animals rendered  hawk and  porcupine is uncertain
shall possess it,
the owl and the raven shall dwell in it.
aaHe shall stretch the line of abconfusion
Hebrew formlessness
over it,
and the plumb line of emptiness.
12Its nobles—there is no one there to call it a kingdom,
and all its princes shall be nothing.
13 adThorns shall grow over its strongholds,
nettles and thistles in its fortresses.
It shall be the haunt of aejackals,
an abode for ostriches.
Or owls

14 agAnd wild animals shall meet with hyenas;
the wild goat shall cry to his fellow;
indeed, there the night bird
Identity uncertain
settles
and finds for herself a resting place.
15 There the owl nests and lays
and hatches and gathers her young in her shadow;
indeed, there aithe hawks are gathered,
each one with her mate.
16Seek and read from the book of the Lord:
Not one of these shall be missing;
none shall be without her mate.
For the mouth of the Lord has commanded,
and his Spirit has gathered them.
17 ajHe has cast the lot for them;
his hand has portioned it out to them with the line;
they shall possess it forever;
from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

Isaiah 63:1-7

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

1 Who is this who comes from akEdom,
in crimsoned garments from alBozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
ammarching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
2 Why is your anapparel red,
and your garments like his aowho treads in the winepress?
3 ap“I have trodden the winepress alone,
aqand from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood
Or  their juice; also verse 6
spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.
4 asFor the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption
Or the year of my redeemed
had come.
5I looked, but authere was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
avI made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

The Lord’s Mercy Remembered

7 I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord,
the praises of the Lord,
according to all that the Lord has granted us,
awand the great goodness to the house of Israel
that he has granted them according to his compassion,
according to the abundance of his steadfast love.

Jeremiah 49:7-22

Judgment on Edom

7Concerning axEdom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

ay“Is wisdom no more in azTeman?
baHas counsel perished from the prudent?
bbHas their wisdom vanished?
8 bcFlee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of bdDedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
bethe time when I punish him.
9 bfIf grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave bggleanings?
bhIf thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 biBut I have stripped Esau bare;
bjI have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and bkhe is no more.
11 blLeave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
bmand let your widows trust in me.”
12For thus says the Lord: bnIf those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, bowill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 bpFor I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that bqBozrah shall become bra horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 bsI have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
bt“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,
Or  of Sela

who hold the height of the hill.
Though you bvmake your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.
17 bwEdom shall become a horror. bxEveryone who passes by it will be horrified byand will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 bzAs when Sodom and Gomorrah and their caneighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, cbno man shall dwell there, ccno man shall sojourn in her. 19 cdBehold, celike a lion coming up from cfthe jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him
Septuagint, Syriac them
run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. chFor who is like me? ciWho will summon me? cjWhat shepherd can stand before me?
20Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against ckEdom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of clTeman: cmEven the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21At the sound of their fall cnthe earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22Behold, coone shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against cpBozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart cqof a woman in her birth pains.”

Ezekiel 25:12-14

Prophecy Against Edom

12Thus says the Lord God: Because crEdom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended csin taking vengeance on them, 13therefore thus says the Lord God, ctI will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from cuTeman even to cvDedan they shall fall by the sword. 14And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom cwby the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and cxthey shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

Ezekiel 35

Prophecy Against Mount Seir

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 cySon of man, czset your face daagainst dbMount Seir, and prophesy against it, 3and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: dcBehold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and ddI will stretch out my hand against you, deand I will make you a desolation and a waste. 4 dfI will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5Because dgyou cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword dhat the time of their calamity, diat the time of their final punishment, 6therefore, djas I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; dkbecause you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 dlI will make Mount Seir a waste dmand a desolation, and I will cut off from it dnall who come and go. 8And I will fill doits mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all dpyour ravines dqthose slain with the sword shall fall. 9 drI will make you a perpetual desolation, and dsyour cities shall not be inhabited. Then dtyou will know that I am the Lord.

10Because you said, du‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and dvwe will take possession of them’—although the dwLord was there 11therefore, dxas I live, declares the Lord God, I will deal with you dyaccording to the anger and dzenvy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And eaI will make myself known among them, when I judge you. 12And you shall know that I am the Lord.

eb“I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate; ecthey are given us to devour.’
13And edyou magnified yourselves against me eewith your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14Thus says the Lord God: efWhile the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15As you egrejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, ehMount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then eithey will know that I am the Lord.
