Isaiah 24:7-12

7 dThe wine mourns,
the vine languishes,
all the merry-hearted sigh.
8 eThe mirth of the tambourines is stilled,
the noise of the jubilant has ceased,
the mirth of the lyre is stilled.
9No more do they drink wine fwith singing;
strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
10 gThe wasted city is broken down;
hevery house is shut up so that none can enter.
11 iThere is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine;
jall joy has grown dark;
the gladness of the earth is banished.
12Desolation is left in the city;
the gates are battered into ruins.

lstrip, and make yourselves bare,
mand tie sackcloth around your waist.

Jeremiah 9:17-19

17 Thus says the Lord of hosts:
nConsider, and call for the mourning women to come;
send for the skillful women to come;
18let them make haste oand raise a wailing over us,
pthat our eyes may run down with tears
and our eyelids flow with water.
19For a sound of wailing is heard from Zion:
qHow we are ruined!
We are utterly shamed,
because we have left the land,
because they have cast down our dwellings.’”

Joel 1:13-15

A Call to Repentance

13 rPut on sackcloth and lament, sO priests;
twail, O ministers of the altar.
Go in, upass the night in sackcloth,
vO ministers of my God!
wBecause grain offering and drink offering
are withheld from the house of your God.
14 xConsecrate a fast;
ycall a solemn assembly.
Gather zthe elders
and aaall the inhabitants of the land
to the house of the Lord your God,
and cry out to the Lord.
15 Alas for the day!
abFor the day of the Lord is near,
and as destruction from the Almighty
 Destruction sounds like the Hebrew for  Almighty
it comes.

Joel 2:12-14

Return to the Lord

12 “Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
adreturn to me with all your heart,
aewith fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
13and afrend your hearts and not agyour garments.”
Return to the Lord your God,
ahfor he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
aiand he relents over disaster.
14 ajWho knows whether he will not turn and relent,
and akleave a blessing behind him,
ala grain offering and a drink offering
for the Lord your God?

James 4:8-9

8 amDraw near to God, and he will draw near to you. anCleanse your hands, you sinners, and aopurify your hearts, apyou double-minded. 9 aqBe wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
