Isaiah 23

An Oracle Concerning Tyre and Sidon

1The aoracle concerning bTyre.

Wail, O cships of Tarshish,
for Tyre is laid waste, dwithout house or harbor!
From ethe land of Cyprus
Hebrew Kittim; also verse 12

it is revealed to them.
2Be still, O inhabitants of the coast;
the merchants of gSidon, who cross the sea, have filled you.
3And on many waters
your revenue was the grain of Shihor,
the harvest of the Nile;
you were hthe merchant of the nations.
4Be ashamed, O iSidon, for the sea has spoken,
the stronghold of the sea, saying:
“I have neither labored nor given birth,
I have neither reared young men
nor brought up young women.”
5When the report comes to Egypt,
they will be in anguish
Hebrew  they will have labor pains
over the report about Tyre.
6 kCross over to Tarshish;
wail, O inhabitants of the coast!
7Is this your exultant city
lwhose origin is from days of old,
whose feet carried her
to settle far away?
8Who has purposed this
against Tyre, the bestower of crowns,
whose merchants were princes,
whose traders were the honored of the earth?
9The Lord of hosts has purposed it,
mto defile the pompous pride of all glory,
The Hebrew words for  glory and  hosts sound alike

to dishonor all the honored of the earth.
10Cross over your land like the Nile,
O daughter of Tarshish;
there is no restraint anymore.
11 oHe has stretched out his hand over the sea;
he has shaken the kingdoms;
the Lord has given command concerning Canaan
to destroy its strongholds.
12And he said:
“You will no more exult,
O oppressed virgin daughter of pSidon;
arise, qcross over to rCyprus,
even there you will have no rest.”
13Behold the land of sthe Chaldeans! This is the people that was not;
Or  that has become nothing
Assyria destined it for wild beasts. They erected utheir siege towers, they stripped her palaces bare, they made her a ruin.

14 vWail, O ships of Tarshish,
for your stronghold is laid waste.
15In that day Tyre will be forgotten for wseventy years, like the days
Or lifetime
of one king. At the end of yseventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:

16 Take a harp;
go about the city,
O forgotten prostitute!
Make sweet melody;
sing many songs,
that you may be remembered.”
17At the end of zseventy years, the Lord will visit Tyre, and she will return to her wages and aawill prostitute herself with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth. 18Her merchandise and her wages will be holy to the Lord. It will not be stored or hoarded, but her merchandise will supply abundant food and fine clothing for those who dwell before the Lord.

Ezekiel 26

Prophecy Against Tyre

1 abIn the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 acSon of man, because adTyre said concerning Jerusalem, aeAha, the gate of the peoples is broken; it has swung open to me. I shall be replenished, now that she is laid waste,’ 3therefore thus says the Lord God: afBehold, I am against you, O Tyre, and will bring up agmany nations against you, ahas the sea brings up its waves. 4They shall destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers, and I will scrape her soil from her and aimake her a bare rock. 5She ajshall be in the midst of the sea a place for the spreading of nets, akfor I have spoken, declares the Lord God. And she shall become plunder for the nations, 6and her daughters on the mainland shall be killed by the sword. alThen they will know that I am the Lord.

7For thus says the Lord God: amBehold, I will bring against Tyre anfrom the north Nebuchadnezzar
Hebrew Nebuchadrezzar; so throughout Ezekiel
king of Babylon, apking of kings, with horses and chariots, and with horsemen and a host of many soldiers.
8He will kill with the sword aqyour daughters on the mainland. arHe will set up a siege wall against you and throw up a mound against you, and raise asa roof of shields against you. 9 atHe will direct the shock of his battering rams against your walls, and with his axes he will break down your towers. 10His horses will be so many that their dust will cover you. Your walls will shake at the noise of the horsemen and wagons and chariots, when he enters your gates as men enter a city that has been breached. 11With the hoofs of his horses he will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your mighty pillars will fall to the ground. 12They will plunder auyour riches and loot avyour merchandise. They will break down your walls and destroy your pleasant houses. Your stones and timber and awsoil they will cast into the midst of the waters. 13 axAnd I will stop the music of your songs, and aythe sound of your lyres shall be heard no more. 14 azI will make you a bare rock. baYou shall be a place for the spreading of nets. You shall never be rebuilt, bbfor I am the Lord; I have spoken, declares the Lord God.

15Thus says the Lord God to Tyre: Will not bcthe coastlands shake at the sound of your fall, bdwhen the wounded groan, when slaughter is made in your midst? 16Then all bethe princes of the sea will step down from their thrones and bfremove their robes and strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; bgthey will sit on the ground and bhtremble every moment and bibe appalled at you. 17And they will bjraise a lamentation over you and say to you,

“‘How you have perished,
you who were inhabited from the seas,
O city renowned,
bkwho was mighty on the sea;
she and her inhabitants blimposed their terror
on all her inhabitants!
18Now the coastlands tremble
on the day of your fall,
and the coastlands that are on the sea
are dismayed at your passing.’
19For thus says the Lord God: When I make you a city laid waste, like the cities that are not inhabited, bmwhen I bring up the deep over you, and the great waters cover you, 20then bnI will make you go down with those who go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you to dwell in the world below, among ruins from of old, bowith those who go down to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited; but I will set beauty bpin the land of the living. 21I will bring you bqto a dreadful end, and you shall be no more. brThough you be sought for, you will never be found again, declares the Lord God.”

Ezekiel 27

A Lament for Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Now you, bsson of man, btraise a lamentation over Tyre, 3and say to Tyre, who dwells at buthe entrances to the sea, bvmerchant of the peoples to many coastlands, thus says the Lord God:

“O Tyre, you have said,
I am bwperfect in beauty.’
4Your borders are bxin the heart of the seas;
your builders made perfect your beauty.
5They made all your planks
of fir trees from bySenir;
they took bza cedar from Lebanon
to make a mast for you.
6Of caoaks of Bashan
they made your oars;
they made your deck of pines
from cbthe coasts of Cyprus,
inlaid with ivory.
7 ccOf fine embroidered linen from Egypt
was your sail,
serving as your banner;
blue and purple from cdthe coasts of Elishah
was your awning.
8The inhabitants of Sidon and ceArvad
were your rowers;
your skilled men, O Tyre, were in you;
they were cfyour pilots.
9The elders of cgGebal and her skilled men were in you,
chcaulking your seams;
all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you
to barter for your wares.
10 ciPersia and cjLud and ckPut were in your army as your men of war. clThey hung the shield and helmet in you; they gave you splendor. 11Men of cmArvad and Helech were on your walls all around, and men of Gamad were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they made cnperfect your beauty.

12 coTarshish did cpbusiness with you because of your great wealth of every kind; silver, iron, tin, and lead they exchanged for your cqwares. 13 crJavan, csTubal, and ctMeshech traded with you; they exchanged human beings and vessels of bronze for your merchandise. 14From cuBeth-togarmah they exchanged horses, war horses, and mules cvfor your wares. 15The men of cwDedan
Hebrew; Septuagint Rhodes
traded with you. Many coastlands were your own special markets; they brought you in payment ivory tusks and ebony.
16Syria cydid business with you because of your abundant goods; they exchanged for your wares czemeralds, dapurple, dbembroidered work, dcfine linen, coral, and ddruby. 17Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged for your merchandise dewheat of dfMinnith, meal,
The meaning of the Hebrew word is unknown
honey, oil, and dhbalm.
18 diDamascus did business with you for your abundant goods, because of your great wealth of every kind; wine of Helbon and djwool of Sahar 19and casks of wine
Probable reading; Hebrew  wool of Sahar, Vedan, and Javan
from Uzal they exchanged for your wares; wrought iron, dlcassia, and dmcalamus were bartered for your merchandise.
20Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21Arabia and all the princes of dnKedar were your favored dealers doin lambs, rams, and goats; in these they did business with you. 22The traders of dpSheba and dqRaamah traded with you; they exchanged drfor your wares dsthe best of all kinds of spices and all precious stones and gold. 23 dtHaran, Canneh, duEden, traders of Sheba, dvAsshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24In your market these traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of dwblue and dxembroidered work, and in carpets of colored material, bound with cords and made secure. 25 dyThe ships of dzTarshish traveled for you with your merchandise. So you were filled and heavily laden eain the heart of the seas.

26 “Your rowers have brought you out
into the high seas.
ebThe east wind has wrecked you
in the heart of the seas.
27Your riches, your wares, your merchandise,
your mariners and ecyour pilots,
edyour caulkers, your dealers in merchandise,
and all your men of war who are in you,
with all your crew
that is in your midst,
sink into the heart of the seas
eeon the day of your fall.
28At the sound of the cry of your pilots
efthe countryside shakes,
29and down from their ships
egcome all who handle the oar.
The mariners and all the pilots of the sea
stand on the land
30 ehand shout aloud over you
and cry out bitterly.
eiThey cast dust on their heads
ejand wallow in ashes;
31they ekmake themselves bald for you
and put sackcloth on their waist,
and they weep over you in bitterness of soul,
with bitter mourning.
32In their wailing they elraise a lamentation for you
and lament over you:
emWho is like Tyre,
like one destroyed in the midst of the sea?
33When your wares came from the seas,
enyou satisfied many peoples;
with your abundant wealth and merchandise
eoyou enriched the kings of the earth.
34Now epyou are wrecked by the seas,
in the depths of the waters;
your merchandise and all your crew in your midst
have sunk with you.
35 eqAll the inhabitants of the coastlands
are appalled at you,
and erthe hair of their kings bristles with horror;
their faces are convulsed.
36 esThe merchants among the peoples ethiss at you;
euyou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.’”

Ezekiel 28

Prophecy Against the Prince of Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 evSon of man, say to ewthe prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:

ex“Because your heart is proud,
and eyyou have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of the gods,
in the heart of the seas,’
yet ezyou are but a man, and no god,
fathough you make your heart like the heart of a god
3 fbyou are indeed wiser fcthan fdDaniel;
no secret is hidden from you;
4by your wisdom and your understanding
feyou have made wealth for yourself,
and have gathered gold and silver
into your treasuries;
5by your great wisdom in your trade
you have increased your wealth,
and ffyour heart has become proud in your wealth
6therefore thus says the Lord God:
fgBecause you make your heart
like the heart of a god,
7therefore, behold, I will bring fhforeigners upon you,
the most ruthless of the nations;
and they shall draw their swords against fithe beauty of your wisdom
and defile fjyour splendor.
8 fkThey shall thrust you down into the pit,
fland you shall die the death of the slain
in the heart of the seas.
9 fmWill you still say, ‘I am a god,’
in the presence of those who kill you,
though fnyou are but a man, and no god,
in the hands of those who slay you?
10 foYou shall die the death of the uncircumcised
by the hand of foreigners;
fpfor I have spoken, declares the Lord God.”

A Lament over the King of Tyre

11Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: 12 fqSon of man, frraise a lamentation over fsthe king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the signet of perfection,
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

fufull of wisdom and fvperfect in beauty.
13You were in fwEden, the garden of God;
fxevery precious stone was your covering,
fysardius, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire,
Or lapis lazuli
gaemerald, and carbuncle;
and crafted in gold were your settings
and your engravings.
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

gcOn the day that you were created
they were prepared.
14You were an anointed gdguardian cherub.
I placed you;
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain
you were on gfthe holy mountain of God;
in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
15You were blameless in your ways
ggfrom the day you were created,
till unrighteousness was found in you.
16In the abundance of ghyour trade
you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from githe mountain of God,
and I destroyed you,
Or banished you
gkO guardian cherub,
from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 glYour heart was proud because of gmyour beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I exposed you before kings,
to feast their eyes on you.
18By the multitude of your iniquities,
in the unrighteousness of your trade
you profaned your sanctuaries;
so gnI brought fire out from your midst;
it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth
goin the sight of all who saw you.
19All who know you among the peoples
are appalled at you;
gpyou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.”

Prophecy Against Sidon

20The word of the Lord came to me: 21 gqSon of man, grset your face toward gsSidon, and gtprophesy against her 22and say, Thus says the Lord God:

Behold, guI am against you, O Sidon,
and gvI will manifest my glory in your midst.
And gwthey shall know that I am the Lord
gxwhen I execute judgments in her
and gymanifest my holiness in her;
23for I will send gzpestilence into her,
and blood into her streets;
and the slain shall fall in her midst,
by the sword that is against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.
24“And for the house of Israel hathere shall be no more a brier to prick or hba thorn to hurt them among all their neighbors hcwho have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

Israel Gathered in Security

25Thus says the Lord God: hdWhen I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and hemanifest my holiness in them in the sight of the nations, hfthen they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 hgAnd they shall dwell securely in it, and they shall build houses and plant vineyards. They shall dwell securely, hhwhen I execute judgments upon all their neighbors hiwho have treated them with contempt. hjThen they will know that I am the Lord their God.”

Joel 3:4-8

4What are you to me, hkO Tyre and Sidon, and all hlthe regions of Philistia? Are you paying me back for something? If you are paying me back, hmI will return your payment on your own head swiftly and speedily. 5For hnyou have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my rich treasures into your temples.
Or palaces
6You have sold hpthe people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks in order to remove them far from their own border. 7Behold, I will stir them up from the place to which you have sold them, and hqI will return your payment on your own head. 8I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the hrSabeans, to a nation far away, for the Lord has spoken.”

Amos 1:9-10

9Thus says the Lord:

hs“For three transgressions of htTyre,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they delivered up a whole people to Edom,
and did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
10So I will send a fire upon the wall of huTyre,
and it shall devour her strongholds.”
