Isaiah 23

An Oracle Concerning Tyre and Sidon

1The aoracle concerning bTyre.

Wail, O cships of Tarshish,
for Tyre is laid waste, dwithout house or harbor!
From ethe land of Cyprus
Hebrew Kittim; also verse 12

it is revealed to them.
2Be still, O inhabitants of the coast;
the merchants of gSidon, who cross the sea, have filled you.
3And on many waters
your revenue was the grain of Shihor,
the harvest of the Nile;
you were hthe merchant of the nations.
4Be ashamed, O iSidon, for the sea has spoken,
the stronghold of the sea, saying:
“I have neither labored nor given birth,
I have neither reared young men
nor brought up young women.”
5When the report comes to Egypt,
they will be in anguish
Hebrew  they will have labor pains
over the report about Tyre.
6 kCross over to Tarshish;
wail, O inhabitants of the coast!
7Is this your exultant city
lwhose origin is from days of old,
whose feet carried her
to settle far away?
8Who has purposed this
against Tyre, the bestower of crowns,
whose merchants were princes,
whose traders were the honored of the earth?
9The Lord of hosts has purposed it,
mto defile the pompous pride of all glory,
The Hebrew words for  glory and  hosts sound alike

to dishonor all the honored of the earth.
10Cross over your land like the Nile,
O daughter of Tarshish;
there is no restraint anymore.
11 oHe has stretched out his hand over the sea;
he has shaken the kingdoms;
the Lord has given command concerning Canaan
to destroy its strongholds.
12And he said:
“You will no more exult,
O oppressed virgin daughter of pSidon;
arise, qcross over to rCyprus,
even there you will have no rest.”
13Behold the land of sthe Chaldeans! This is the people that was not;
Or  that has become nothing
Assyria destined it for wild beasts. They erected utheir siege towers, they stripped her palaces bare, they made her a ruin.

14 vWail, O ships of Tarshish,
for your stronghold is laid waste.
15In that day Tyre will be forgotten for wseventy years, like the days
Or lifetime
of one king. At the end of yseventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:

16 Take a harp;
go about the city,
O forgotten prostitute!
Make sweet melody;
sing many songs,
that you may be remembered.”
17At the end of zseventy years, the Lord will visit Tyre, and she will return to her wages and aawill prostitute herself with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth. 18Her merchandise and her wages will be holy to the Lord. It will not be stored or hoarded, but her merchandise will supply abundant food and fine clothing for those who dwell before the Lord.

Jeremiah 47:4

4because of the day that is coming to destroy
all abthe Philistines,
to cut off from acTyre and Sidon
every helper that remains.
For the Lord is destroying the Philistines,
adthe remnant of the coastland of aeCaphtor.

Ezekiel 26

Prophecy Against Tyre

1 afIn the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 agSon of man, because ahTyre said concerning Jerusalem, aiAha, the gate of the peoples is broken; it has swung open to me. I shall be replenished, now that she is laid waste,’ 3therefore thus says the Lord God: ajBehold, I am against you, O Tyre, and will bring up akmany nations against you, alas the sea brings up its waves. 4They shall destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers, and I will scrape her soil from her and ammake her a bare rock. 5She anshall be in the midst of the sea a place for the spreading of nets, aofor I have spoken, declares the Lord God. And she shall become plunder for the nations, 6and her daughters on the mainland shall be killed by the sword. apThen they will know that I am the Lord.

7For thus says the Lord God: aqBehold, I will bring against Tyre arfrom the north Nebuchadnezzar
Hebrew Nebuchadrezzar; so throughout Ezekiel
king of Babylon, atking of kings, with horses and chariots, and with horsemen and a host of many soldiers.
8He will kill with the sword auyour daughters on the mainland. avHe will set up a siege wall against you and throw up a mound against you, and raise awa roof of shields against you. 9 axHe will direct the shock of his battering rams against your walls, and with his axes he will break down your towers. 10His horses will be so many that their dust will cover you. Your walls will shake at the noise of the horsemen and wagons and chariots, when he enters your gates as men enter a city that has been breached. 11With the hoofs of his horses he will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your mighty pillars will fall to the ground. 12They will plunder ayyour riches and loot azyour merchandise. They will break down your walls and destroy your pleasant houses. Your stones and timber and basoil they will cast into the midst of the waters. 13 bbAnd I will stop the music of your songs, and bcthe sound of your lyres shall be heard no more. 14 bdI will make you a bare rock. beYou shall be a place for the spreading of nets. You shall never be rebuilt, bffor I am the Lord; I have spoken, declares the Lord God.

15Thus says the Lord God to Tyre: Will not bgthe coastlands shake at the sound of your fall, bhwhen the wounded groan, when slaughter is made in your midst? 16Then all bithe princes of the sea will step down from their thrones and bjremove their robes and strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; bkthey will sit on the ground and bltremble every moment and bmbe appalled at you. 17And they will bnraise a lamentation over you and say to you,

“‘How you have perished,
you who were inhabited from the seas,
O city renowned,
bowho was mighty on the sea;
she and her inhabitants bpimposed their terror
on all her inhabitants!
18Now the coastlands tremble
on the day of your fall,
and the coastlands that are on the sea
are dismayed at your passing.’
19For thus says the Lord God: When I make you a city laid waste, like the cities that are not inhabited, bqwhen I bring up the deep over you, and the great waters cover you, 20then brI will make you go down with those who go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you to dwell in the world below, among ruins from of old, bswith those who go down to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited; but I will set beauty btin the land of the living. 21I will bring you buto a dreadful end, and you shall be no more. bvThough you be sought for, you will never be found again, declares the Lord God.”

Ezekiel 27

A Lament for Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Now you, bwson of man, bxraise a lamentation over Tyre, 3and say to Tyre, who dwells at bythe entrances to the sea, bzmerchant of the peoples to many coastlands, thus says the Lord God:

“O Tyre, you have said,
I am caperfect in beauty.’
4Your borders are cbin the heart of the seas;
your builders made perfect your beauty.
5They made all your planks
of fir trees from ccSenir;
they took cda cedar from Lebanon
to make a mast for you.
6Of ceoaks of Bashan
they made your oars;
they made your deck of pines
from cfthe coasts of Cyprus,
inlaid with ivory.
7 cgOf fine embroidered linen from Egypt
was your sail,
serving as your banner;
blue and purple from chthe coasts of Elishah
was your awning.
8The inhabitants of Sidon and ciArvad
were your rowers;
your skilled men, O Tyre, were in you;
they were cjyour pilots.
9The elders of ckGebal and her skilled men were in you,
clcaulking your seams;
all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you
to barter for your wares.
10 cmPersia and cnLud and coPut were in your army as your men of war. cpThey hung the shield and helmet in you; they gave you splendor. 11Men of cqArvad and Helech were on your walls all around, and men of Gamad were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they made crperfect your beauty.

12 csTarshish did ctbusiness with you because of your great wealth of every kind; silver, iron, tin, and lead they exchanged for your cuwares. 13 cvJavan, cwTubal, and cxMeshech traded with you; they exchanged human beings and vessels of bronze for your merchandise. 14From cyBeth-togarmah they exchanged horses, war horses, and mules czfor your wares. 15The men of daDedan
Hebrew; Septuagint Rhodes
traded with you. Many coastlands were your own special markets; they brought you in payment ivory tusks and ebony.
16Syria dcdid business with you because of your abundant goods; they exchanged for your wares ddemeralds, depurple, dfembroidered work, dgfine linen, coral, and dhruby. 17Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged for your merchandise diwheat of djMinnith, meal,
The meaning of the Hebrew word is unknown
honey, oil, and dlbalm.
18 dmDamascus did business with you for your abundant goods, because of your great wealth of every kind; wine of Helbon and dnwool of Sahar 19and casks of wine
Probable reading; Hebrew  wool of Sahar, Vedan, and Javan
from Uzal they exchanged for your wares; wrought iron, dpcassia, and dqcalamus were bartered for your merchandise.
20Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21Arabia and all the princes of drKedar were your favored dealers dsin lambs, rams, and goats; in these they did business with you. 22The traders of dtSheba and duRaamah traded with you; they exchanged dvfor your wares dwthe best of all kinds of spices and all precious stones and gold. 23 dxHaran, Canneh, dyEden, traders of Sheba, dzAsshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24In your market these traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of eablue and ebembroidered work, and in carpets of colored material, bound with cords and made secure. 25 ecThe ships of edTarshish traveled for you with your merchandise. So you were filled and heavily laden eein the heart of the seas.

26 “Your rowers have brought you out
into the high seas.
efThe east wind has wrecked you
in the heart of the seas.
27Your riches, your wares, your merchandise,
your mariners and egyour pilots,
ehyour caulkers, your dealers in merchandise,
and all your men of war who are in you,
with all your crew
that is in your midst,
sink into the heart of the seas
eion the day of your fall.
28At the sound of the cry of your pilots
ejthe countryside shakes,
29and down from their ships
ekcome all who handle the oar.
The mariners and all the pilots of the sea
stand on the land
30 eland shout aloud over you
and cry out bitterly.
emThey cast dust on their heads
enand wallow in ashes;
31they eomake themselves bald for you
and put sackcloth on their waist,
and they weep over you in bitterness of soul,
with bitter mourning.
32In their wailing they epraise a lamentation for you
and lament over you:
eqWho is like Tyre,
like one destroyed in the midst of the sea?
33When your wares came from the seas,
eryou satisfied many peoples;
with your abundant wealth and merchandise
esyou enriched the kings of the earth.
34Now etyou are wrecked by the seas,
in the depths of the waters;
your merchandise and all your crew in your midst
have sunk with you.
35 euAll the inhabitants of the coastlands
are appalled at you,
and evthe hair of their kings bristles with horror;
their faces are convulsed.
36 ewThe merchants among the peoples exhiss at you;
eyyou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.’”

Ezekiel 28

Prophecy Against the Prince of Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 ezSon of man, say to fathe prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:

fb“Because your heart is proud,
and fcyou have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of the gods,
in the heart of the seas,’
yet fdyou are but a man, and no god,
fethough you make your heart like the heart of a god
3 ffyou are indeed wiser fgthan fhDaniel;
no secret is hidden from you;
4by your wisdom and your understanding
fiyou have made wealth for yourself,
and have gathered gold and silver
into your treasuries;
5by your great wisdom in your trade
you have increased your wealth,
and fjyour heart has become proud in your wealth
6therefore thus says the Lord God:
fkBecause you make your heart
like the heart of a god,
7therefore, behold, I will bring flforeigners upon you,
the most ruthless of the nations;
and they shall draw their swords against fmthe beauty of your wisdom
and defile fnyour splendor.
8 foThey shall thrust you down into the pit,
fpand you shall die the death of the slain
in the heart of the seas.
9 fqWill you still say, ‘I am a god,’
in the presence of those who kill you,
though fryou are but a man, and no god,
in the hands of those who slay you?
10 fsYou shall die the death of the uncircumcised
by the hand of foreigners;
ftfor I have spoken, declares the Lord God.”

A Lament over the King of Tyre

11Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: 12 fuSon of man, fvraise a lamentation over fwthe king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the signet of perfection,
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

fyfull of wisdom and fzperfect in beauty.
13You were in gaEden, the garden of God;
gbevery precious stone was your covering,
gcsardius, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire,
Or lapis lazuli
geemerald, and carbuncle;
and crafted in gold were your settings
and your engravings.
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

ggOn the day that you were created
they were prepared.
14You were an anointed ghguardian cherub.
I placed you;
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain
you were on gjthe holy mountain of God;
in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
15You were blameless in your ways
gkfrom the day you were created,
till unrighteousness was found in you.
16In the abundance of glyour trade
you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from gmthe mountain of God,
and I destroyed you,
Or banished you
goO guardian cherub,
from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 gpYour heart was proud because of gqyour beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I exposed you before kings,
to feast their eyes on you.
18By the multitude of your iniquities,
in the unrighteousness of your trade
you profaned your sanctuaries;
so grI brought fire out from your midst;
it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth
gsin the sight of all who saw you.
19All who know you among the peoples
are appalled at you;
gtyou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.”

Prophecy Against Sidon

20The word of the Lord came to me: 21 guSon of man, gvset your face toward gwSidon, and gxprophesy against her 22and say, Thus says the Lord God:

Behold, gyI am against you, O Sidon,
and gzI will manifest my glory in your midst.
And hathey shall know that I am the Lord
hbwhen I execute judgments in her
and hcmanifest my holiness in her;
23for I will send hdpestilence into her,
and blood into her streets;
and the slain shall fall in her midst,
by the sword that is against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.
24“And for the house of Israel hethere shall be no more a brier to prick or hfa thorn to hurt them among all their neighbors hgwho have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

Israel Gathered in Security

25Thus says the Lord God: hhWhen I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and himanifest my holiness in them in the sight of the nations, hjthen they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 hkAnd they shall dwell securely in it, and they shall build houses and plant vineyards. They shall dwell securely, hlwhen I execute judgments upon all their neighbors hmwho have treated them with contempt. hnThen they will know that I am the Lord their God.”

Joel 3:4-8

4What are you to me, hoO Tyre and Sidon, and all hpthe regions of Philistia? Are you paying me back for something? If you are paying me back, hqI will return your payment on your own head swiftly and speedily. 5For hryou have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my rich treasures into your temples.
Or palaces
6You have sold htthe people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks in order to remove them far from their own border. 7Behold, I will stir them up from the place to which you have sold them, and huI will return your payment on your own head. 8I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the hvSabeans, to a nation far away, for the Lord has spoken.”

Zechariah 9:2-4

2 hwand on Hamath also, which borders on it,
hxTyre and hySidon, though hzthey are very wise.
3Tyre has built herself iaa rampart
and ibheaped up silver like dust,
and fine gold like the mud of the streets.
4But behold, the Lord will strip her of her possessions
and strike down icher power on the sea,
and idshe shall be devoured by fire.
