5 The earth lies ^bdefiled
under its inhabitants;
for ^cthey have transgressed the laws,
violated the statutes,
broken the everlasting covenant.
6 Therefore ^da curse devours the earth,
and its inhabitants ^esuffer for their guilt;
therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched,
and few men are left.
7 ^fThe wine mourns,
the vine languishes,
all the merry-hearted sigh.
8 ^gThe mirth of the tambourines is stilled,
the noise of the jubilant has ceased,
the mirth of the lyre is stilled.
9 No more do they drink wine ^hwith singing;
strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
10 ⁱThe wasted city is broken down;
^jevery house is shut up so that none can enter.
11 ^kThere is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine;

the gladness of the earth is banished.
12 Desolation is left in the city;
the gates are battered into ruins.

Jeremiah 4:27

27 For thus says the Lord, “The whole land shall be a desolation; ^myet I will not make a full end.

Joel 1:10-13

10 The fields are destroyed,

the oil languishes.

A Call to Repentance

are withheld from the house of your God.
