Isaiah 24:4-12

4 aThe earth mourns and withers;
the world languishes and withers;
the highest people of the earth languish.
5The earth lies bdefiled
under its inhabitants;
for cthey have transgressed the laws,
violated the statutes,
broken the everlasting covenant.
6Therefore da curse devours the earth,
and its inhabitants esuffer for their guilt;
therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched,
and few men are left.
7 fThe wine mourns,
the vine languishes,
all the merry-hearted sigh.
8 gThe mirth of the tambourines is stilled,
the noise of the jubilant has ceased,
the mirth of the lyre is stilled.
9No more do they drink wine hwith singing;
strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
10 iThe wasted city is broken down;
jevery house is shut up so that none can enter.
11 kThere is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine;
lall joy has grown dark;
the gladness of the earth is banished.
12Desolation is left in the city;
the gates are battered into ruins.

Jeremiah 4:27

27For thus says the Lord, “The whole land shall be a desolation; myet I will not make a full end.

Joel 1:10-13

10The fields are destroyed,
nthe ground mourns,
because othe grain is destroyed,
pthe wine dries up,
the oil languishes.
11 qBe ashamed,
The Hebrew words for  dry up and  be ashamed in verses 10–12, 17 sound alike
O tillers of the soil;
wail, O vinedressers,
for the wheat and the barley,
sbecause the harvest of the field has perished.
12The vine dries up;
tthe fig tree languishes.
Pomegranate, palm, and apple,
all the trees of the field are dried up,
and ugladness dries up
from the children of man.

A Call to Repentance

13 vPut on sackcloth and lament, wO priests;
xwail, O ministers of the altar.
Go in, ypass the night in sackcloth,
zO ministers of my God!
aaBecause grain offering and drink offering
are withheld from the house of your God.

Amos 1:2

Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

2And he said:

ab“The Lord roars from Zion
and utters his voice from Jerusalem;
acthe pastures of the shepherds mourn,
and the adtop of aeCarmel withers.”

Amos 5:16

16Therefore thus says the Lord, afthe God of hosts, the Lord:

“In all the squares agthere shall be wailing,
and in all the streets they shall say, ‘Alas! Alas!’
They shall call the farmers to mourning
and ahto wailing those who are skilled in lamentation,

Amos 8:8

8 aiShall not the land tremble on this account,
and everyone mourn who dwells in it,
ajand all of it rise like the Nile,
and be tossed about akand sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?”

Nahum 1:4

4 alHe rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
he dries up all the rivers;
amBashan and anCarmel wither;
the bloom of aoLebanon withers.
