Isaiah 24:5

5The earth lies adefiled
under its inhabitants;
for bthey have transgressed the laws,
violated the statutes,
broken the everlasting covenant.

Isaiah 48:1

Israel Refined for God’s Glory

1 Hear this, O house of Jacob,
cwho are called by the name of Israel,
and dwho came from the waters of Judah,
ewho swear by the name of the Lord
and confess the God of Israel,
but not in truth or right.

Isaiah 59:2-8

2 fbut your iniquities have made a separation
between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
so that he does not hear.
3 gFor your hands are defiled with blood
and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies;
your tongue mutters wickedness.
4 hNo one enters suit justly;
no one goes to law honestly;
they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies,
ithey conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity.
5They hatch adderseggs;
they weave the spider’s web;
he who eats their eggs dies,
and from one that is crushed a viper is hatched.
6 jTheir webs will not serve as clothing;
men will not cover themselves with what they make.
Their works are works of iniquity,
and deeds of violence are in their hands.
7 kTheir feet run to evil,
and they are swift to shed innocent blood;
their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity;
desolation and destruction are in their highways.
8The way of peace they do not know,
and there is no justice in their paths;
they have made their roads crooked;
lno one who treads on them knows peace.

Isaiah 59:12-15

12For our transgressions are multiplied before you,
and our sins testify against us;
for our transgressions are with us,
and we know our iniquities:
13transgressing, and denying the Lord,
and turning back from following our God,
mspeaking oppression and revolt,
conceiving and uttering from the heart lying words.

Judgment and Redemption

14 nJustice is turned back,
and righteousness stands far away;
for truth has stumbled in the public squares,
and uprightness cannot enter.
15Truth is lacking,
and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.
The Lord saw it, and it displeased him
Hebrew  and it was evil in his eyes

that there was no justice.

Jeremiah 5:1-2

Jerusalem Refused to Repent

1 pRun to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem,
look and take note!
Search her squares to see
qif you can find a man,
one who does justice
and seeks truth,
rthat I may pardon her.
2 sThough they say, “As the Lord lives,”
tyet they swear falsely.

Jeremiah 5:7-9

7 uHow can I pardon you?
Your children have forsaken me
vand have sworn by those who are no gods.
wWhen I fed them to the full,
xthey committed adultery
yand trooped to the houses of whores.
8They were well-fed, lusty stallions,
zeach neighing aafor his neighbor’s wife.
9 abShall I not punish them for these things?

declares the Lord;
and shall I not avenge myself
on a nation such as this?

Jeremiah 5:26-27

26For wicked men are found among my people;
acthey lurk like fowlers lying in wait.
The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain

aeThey set a trap;
they catch men.
27Like a cage full of birds,
their houses are full of deceit;
therefore they have become great and rich;

Jeremiah 6:7

7 afAs a well keeps its water fresh,
so she keeps fresh her evil;
agviolence and destruction are heard within her;
sickness and wounds are ever before me.

Jeremiah 7:6-10

6if you ahdo not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, aior shed innocent blood in this place, ajand if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, 7 akthen I will let you dwell in this place, alin the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.

8Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. 9 amWill you steal, murder, commit adultery, answear falsely, aomake offerings to Baal, apand go after other gods that you have not known, 10and then come and stand before me in this house, aqwhich is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—only to go on doing all these abominations?
