Isaiah 30:1-6

Do Not Go Down to Egypt

1 Ah, astubborn children,” declares the Lord,
b“who carry out a plan, but not mine,
and who make can alliance,
Hebrew  who weave a web
but not of my Spirit,
that they may add sin to sin;
2 ewho set out to go down to Egypt,
without asking for my direction,
to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh
and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!
3 fTherefore shall the protection of Pharaoh turn to your shame,
and the shelter in the shadow of Egypt to your humiliation.
4For though his officials are at gZoan
and hhis envoys reach iHanes,
5everyone comes to shame
through ja people that cannot profit them,
that brings neither help nor profit,
but shame and disgrace.”
6An koracle on lthe beasts of mthe Negeb.

Through a land of trouble and anguish,
from where come the lioness and the lion,
the adder and the nflying fiery serpent,
they carry their riches on the backs of donkeys,
and their treasures on the humps of camels,
to a people that cannot profit them.

Isaiah 31:1-3

Woe to Those Who Go Down to Egypt

1 Woe to othose who go down to Egypt for help
and rely on horses,
who ptrust in chariots because they are many
and in horsemen because they are very strong,
but qdo not look to the Holy One of Israel
or consult the Lord!
2And ryet he is wise and brings disaster;
she does not call back his words,
but twill arise against the house of the evildoers
and against the helpers of uthose who work iniquity.
3The Egyptians are man, and not God,
and their horses vare flesh, and not spirit.
When the Lord stretches out his hand,
the helper will stumble, and he who is helped will fall,
and they will all perish together.

Isaiah 55:2

2 wWhy do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.

Jeremiah 3:23-25

23Truly xthe hills are a delusion,
the orgies
Hebrew commotion
on the mountains.
zTruly in the Lord our God
is the salvation of Israel.
24“But from our youth the shameful thing has devoured all for which our fathers labored, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25 aaLet us lie down in our shame, and let our dishonor cover us. For abwe have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and we have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

Habakkuk 2:13

13Behold, is it not from the Lord of hosts
that acpeoples labor merely for fire,
and nations weary themselves for nothing?

Romans 6:21

21 adBut what fruit were you getting at that time from the things aeof which you are now ashamed? afFor the end of those things is death.
