10 In little more than a year
you will shudder, you complacent women;
for the grape harvest fails,
the fruit harvest will not come.
11 Tremble, you women ^cwho are at ease,
shudder, you complacent ones;
^dstrip, and make yourselves bare,
^eand tie sackcloth around your waist.
12 ^fBeat your breasts for the pleasant fields,
for the fruitful vine,
13 ^gfor the soil of my people
growing up in thorns and briers,
^hyes, for all the joyous houses
in the exultant city.
14 For the palace is forsaken,
the populous city deserted;
the hill and the watchtower
will become dens forever,
ⁱa joy of wild donkeys,
a pasture of flocks;

Lamentations 1:11-12

11 All her people ^jgroan
as ^kthey search for bread;
they trade their ^ltreasures for ^mfood
to revive their strength.
“Look, O Lord, and see,
for I am despised.”
12 “Is it nothing to you, all ⁿyou who pass by?
^oLook and see
if there is any sorrow like my sorrow,
which was brought upon me,
which ^pthe Lord inflicted
on ^qthe day of his fierce anger.

Lamentations 1:18-20

18 ^r“The Lord is in the right,
^sfor I have rebelled against his word;
but hear, all you peoples,
and see my suffering;
^tmy young women and my young men
have gone into captivity.
19 “I called to ^umy lovers,
but they deceived me;
my priests and elders
perished in the city,
while ^vthey sought food
to revive their strength.
20 “Look, O Lord, for I am in distress;
^wmy stomach churns;
my heart is wrung within me,
because I have been very rebellious.

in the house it is like death.

Lamentations 2:10-11

10 The elders of the daughter of Zion

^aathey have thrown dust on their heads
and ^abput on sackcloth;
the young women of Jerusalem
have bowed their heads to the ground.
11 ^acMy eyes are spent with weeping;
^admy stomach churns;
^aemy bile is poured out to the ground
^afbecause of the destruction of the daughter of my people,
^agbecause infants and babies ^ahfaint
in the streets of the city.

Lamentations 2:19-21

19 “Arise, ^aicry out in the night,
at the beginning of the night watches!
^ajPour out your heart like water
before the presence of the Lord!
^akLift your hands to him
for the lives of your children,
^alwho faint for hunger
at the head of every street.”
20 Look, O Lord, and see!
^amWith whom have you dealt thus?
^anShould women eat the fruit of their womb,
the children of ^aotheir tender care?
Should ^appriest and prophet be killed
in the sanctuary of the Lord?
21 In the dust of the streets
^aqlie the young and the old;
^army young women and my young men
have fallen by the sword;
^asyou have killed them in the day of your anger,
slaughtering ^atwithout pity.

Joel 1:8-13

from the children of man.

A Call to Repentance

13 ^bhPut on sackcloth and lament, ^biO priests;
^bjwail, O ministers of the altar.
Go in, ^bkpass the night in sackcloth,
^blO ministers of my God!
^bmBecause grain offering and drink offering
are withheld from the house of your God.
