Isaiah 34

Judgment on the Nations

1 Draw near, aO nations, to hear,
and give attention, O peoples!
Let the earth hear, and all that fills it;
the world, and all that comes from it.
2For the Lord is enraged against all the nations,
and furious against all their host;
he has bdevoted them to destruction,
That is, set apart ( devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); also verse 5
has given them over for slaughter.
3Their slain shall be cast out,
and dthe stench of their corpses shall rise;
ethe mountains shall flow with their blood.
4 fAll the host of heaven shall rot away,
and the skies roll up like a scroll.
All their host shall fall,
as leaves fall from the vine,
like leaves falling from the fig tree.
5 For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens;
behold, it descends for judgment upon gEdom,
upon the people hI have devoted to destruction.
6The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood;
it is gorged with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
iFor the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 jWild oxen shall kfall with them,
and lyoung steers with mthe mighty bulls.
Their land shall drink its fill of blood,
and their soil shall be gorged with fat.
8 nFor the Lord has a day of vengeance,
a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
9 oAnd the streams of Edom
Hebrew her streams
shall be turned into pitch,
and her soil into sulfur;
her land shall become burning pitch.
10Night and day qit shall not be quenched;
rits smoke shall go up forever.
sFrom generation to generation it shall lie waste;
none shall pass through it forever and ever.
11 tBut the hawk and the porcupine
The identity of the animals rendered  hawk and  porcupine is uncertain
shall possess it,
the owl and the raven shall dwell in it.
vHe shall stretch the line of wconfusion
Hebrew formlessness
over it,
and the plumb line of emptiness.
12Its nobles—there is no one there to call it a kingdom,
and all its princes shall be nothing.
13 yThorns shall grow over its strongholds,
nettles and thistles in its fortresses.
It shall be the haunt of zjackals,
an abode for ostriches.
Or owls

14 abAnd wild animals shall meet with hyenas;
the wild goat shall cry to his fellow;
indeed, there the night bird
Identity uncertain
settles
and finds for herself a resting place.
15 There the owl nests and lays
and hatches and gathers her young in her shadow;
indeed, there adthe hawks are gathered,
each one with her mate.
16Seek and read from the book of the Lord:
Not one of these shall be missing;
none shall be without her mate.
For the mouth of the Lord has commanded,
and his Spirit has gathered them.
17 aeHe has cast the lot for them;
his hand has portioned it out to them with the line;
they shall possess it forever;
from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

Isaiah 63:1-6

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

1 Who is this who comes from afEdom,
in crimsoned garments from agBozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
ahmarching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
2 Why is your aiapparel red,
and your garments like his ajwho treads in the winepress?
3 ak“I have trodden the winepress alone,
aland from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood
Or  their juice; also verse 6
spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.
4 anFor the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption
Or the year of my redeemed
had come.
5I looked, but apthere was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
aqI made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Jeremiah 25:15-29

The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath

15Thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: arTake from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of asthe sword that I am sending among them.”

17So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand, atand made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it: 18 auJerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and officials, avto make them a desolation and a waste, a hissing and a curse, as at this day; 19 awPharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, all his people, 20and axall the mixed tribes among them; all the kings of aythe land of Uz and all the kings of azthe land of the Philistines ( baAshkelon, bbGaza, Ekron, and the remnant of bcAshdod); 21 bdEdom, beMoab, and the sons of bfAmmon; 22all the kings of bgTyre, all the kings of bhSidon, and the kings of the coastland across bithe sea; 23 bjDedan, bkTema, blBuz, and all who cut bmthe corners of their hair; 24all the bnkings of Arabia and all the kings of bothe mixed tribes who dwell in the desert; 25all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of bpElam, and all the kings of bqMedia; 26all the kings of brthe north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of bsBabylon
Hebrew Sheshach, a code name for Babylon
shall drink.

27“Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: buDrink, be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of bvthe sword that I am sending among you.’

28“And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: bwYou must drink! 29For behold, bxI begin to work disaster at the city that is called by my name, and shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, byfor I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the Lord of hosts.’

Jeremiah 49:12

12For thus says the Lord: bzIf those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, cawill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink.

Ezekiel 25:12-14

Prophecy Against Edom

12Thus says the Lord God: Because cbEdom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended ccin taking vengeance on them, 13therefore thus says the Lord God, cdI will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from ceTeman even to cfDedan they shall fall by the sword. 14And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom cgby the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and chthey shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

Ezekiel 35:3-9

3and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: ciBehold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and cjI will stretch out my hand against you, ckand I will make you a desolation and a waste. 4 clI will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5Because cmyou cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword cnat the time of their calamity, coat the time of their final punishment, 6therefore, cpas I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; cqbecause you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 crI will make Mount Seir a waste csand a desolation, and I will cut off from it ctall who come and go. 8And I will fill cuits mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all cvyour ravines cwthose slain with the sword shall fall. 9 cxI will make you a perpetual desolation, and cyyour cities shall not be inhabited. Then czyou will know that I am the Lord.
